lansile:Wrong.. we have tried the import restrictions and failed. A free market economy is the best way to grow. |

ElSudani:Good on China if they produce cassava but still doesn't negate my point. Countries have competitive edge in certain agro product. Unless you want to believe Nigeria can be self sufficient in every product, which will be wrong and myopic. For me, if we had edge in rice cultivation, imported rice with the logistics therein and tax shouldn't cost x2 lesser than home grown rice. It doesn't make economic sense to enrich a few rice farmers to the detriment of the entire country. |

tctrills:Answer my question first. As a Nigerian would you produce or you'd import? |

Eriokanmi:You can only understand him because there are restrictions to import. Without the restriction you'd only be an importer. You'd dump your export trade. |

tctrills: Wrong about what? That cassava can do well even in poor soil? I didn't say Nigeria is not the leading producer of cassava in the world. But not every crop is as hardy as cassava which can do well in poor soil and with little care. Rice production is not exactly like growing cassava. |
Re: Peter Obi: We Will Remove Import & FOREX Restrictions by tctrills: 10:12am On Oct 07, 2022 |
ElSudani:You obviously have never farmed. Cassava does well on good soil and poorly on bad soil. If your land is not fertile, your tubers would be very small. Please ask any farmer. |

Barryseal: I didn't say Nigeria can be self sufficient in every crop. But yes, Nigeria can be self sufficient in rice production and even have a lot for export. |

Perfectbeing:Actually, China has some of the biggest free trade zones in the world. Most of their industries are in the free trade zones. Also, China has multiple free trade agreements with many nations. Infact China would love to have free trade agreements with every single country. 1 Like |

tctrills:Did China became where they are today by opening up her borders as a dumping ground for the world? |
Re: Peter Obi: We Will Remove Import & FOREX Restrictions by tctrills: 10:34am On Oct 07, 2022 |
Perfectbeing:Not really, we have been producing Agbado and cassava for more than 100 years now and things keep getting worse. |

Perfectbeing:You use funny words, dumping ground. Actually China was literally the worlds dumping ground less than 8 years ago. Waste and refuse from Europe and America used to be exported to china. But then, Nigeria always had import duties. How did it grow our industries. We currently have more failed industry than anywhere in Africa. You don't need to go to China for examples we here in Nigeria have import duties and we see it has not grown our industries. |

Re: Peter Obi: We Will Remove Import & FOREX Restrictions by Barryseal: 10:45am On Oct 07, 2022 |
ElSudani:We can't achieve this level of sufficiency and compete at the global stage with the likes of China, India, Thailand, Australia etall. Not when you're producing 5tones per hectare at best. If it makes economic sense to produce rice locally, a bag of Nigerian rice should be 5k not #33k. You think you can export Nigerian rice x3 of Thailand and you will get willing international buyers? We have products which we grow cheaper, consume and export at profit. We should focus on that. This is like Micheal Jordan taking sabbatical from basketball to pick up golf and expect to beat Tiger woods to become world number1. |

Perfectbeing:Do you know why the iphone is produced in China? All components of the iphone come in to China duty free. The chips come in from south Korea and Taiwan, the precision equipment comes in from Germany. The design comes from the US. The batteries run on Cobalt from Congo. All these come in duty free. |

Perfectbeing:Yes anyone could make money from anything. People make billions from transport, from tomatoes, from real estate, from snails, from restaurants, from hospitality. So just because a woman made 5 billion does not mean that our entire economy must go that way. |
Re: Peter Obi: We Will Remove Import & FOREX Restrictions by Perfectbeing(m): 10:51am On Oct 07, 2022 |
tctrills:Those were the import goods needed to boost China's production which even Nigeria does today. When Buhari locked rice import, it didn't affect fertilisers, agricultural implements, viable seeds. Peter Obi said he will remove all import restrictions. Meaning even rice, Cassandra, fertilizers, sugar etc that we're now producing will be affected.. Nigeria will become a dumping ground for everything. |

Re: Peter Obi: We Will Remove Import & FOREX Restrictions by tctrills: 10:52am On Oct 07, 2022 |
Perfectbeing:China was very very poor because they locked their economy. The moment they opened their economy to the world, they took over 600 million people out of poverty. Please do your research. Japan also locked their economy in the nineteenth century we know the result. I am not blindly supporting Obi. I have always advocated a free market economy. I have even debated it here on Nairaland in the past. 1 Like |

Perfectbeing:Good you brought up rice. When Buhari ban the import of rice, the price of rice almost tripled. It only brought suffering to everyone. Since the time of Jonathan till now, the federal and state governments have invested more into rice than any other crop. It has only made Nigerians poorer and weakened out economy. We ban the importation of cement and now the Nigerian people pay a much higher price for cement than most countries in Africa while only few benefit. When would we learn. 1 Like |
