The naira doesn't need to be redesigned. The problem is leaders who are not ready to build a sustainable economy that entails the production of goods and services, allowing imports and exports, free markets, and free trade. Nigeria is a major exporter of oil, yet the petroleum shortage is an annual problem because it is being monopolized by the government. But if modular refineries are allowed to improve in their quality and operate rather than term them "illegal oil bunkers" there will be a great and noticeable change in the economy. The economy will receive fresh air. There is no need to try to produce goods not up to the standard in the world trade market to be termed "one of the fastest growing economies". Rather produce (local) goods that are needed in the world market but few in supply and export them. Make small and medium-scale businesses easy to operate instead of all the bureaucracy in place. Redesigning the naira will change nothing because those who have looted the old naira notes still have access to the printing machine. Sigh. 2 Likes |

I believe that there is more to the Arabic sign on the naira notes. Even SLS allayed the fear of people of his religion when he spoke to the CBN and was assured that the Arabic sign would not be removed. I also remembered the opposition faced by GEJ when he removed the sign from the #100 note in 2014 ahead of the nation's centenary celebration. 1 Like |

The irony is that the man wailing about the lack of arablc would probably fail if asked to design the note with Arabic inscriptions He would first need a keyboard with Arabic characters Then he would have to search and download the exact Arabic font All this assumes the silly self-servicer can actually read and write in Arabic, because he would have to search Arab art /typography websites to source the exact font used. Unlike you in the south, the North had already had literate people. thry could read and write their own language. The culture of written tradition did not come with the advent of british colonialism for them, they were already writing at the time the white man came to them. what you call Arabic on the Naira note is actually 100 nairaas the case may be in Hausa. The only thing is that it is written using arabic script. Go and ask the Iranians who are persians but also use the Arabic script in writing. And also the chinese, they all have Arabic inscriptions on their notes. the first picture below is the reverse side of the Chinese Yuan or the Renminbi. You can see the Arabic script on it. And this is a country where majority of them are Han without any religion. And the Iranian? the next picture is their currency and it has Arabic script on it. Give it to the Arab and I can guarantee you that he does not know what it is! They even have english on their note even though they could easily say that English is the language of the infidels and the crusaders.

If the Arabic inscription doesn't matter why don't we let it be as it had bn for years..... U might b saying arabic isnt our official language bcus they didn't colonise us.... But do u knw that here in the north BOKO is HARAM I.e majority of us didn't believe in western education but almost every hausa must pass through Islamic class whether u are an elite or Almajiris which make the Arabic inscription on our currency very important to us northerner...... We are more Arab than the English |

Softmirror: Arabic is not a Nigerian language. It is certainly not a local tongue in Nigeria and it hasn't always been here. It is Soo wrong to be there.
