An oil producing country without functional refineries, what a shame.

Thanks to Aliko Dangote, his Lagos refinery will soon come on stream

If you think Dangote refinery is a blessing to Nigeria you should have a thorough rethink. How much is a bag of dangote cement? Nigeria’s economic has slowly been pushed to capitalism and it won’t be funny in the next 10 years to come.

And you don't know exchange rate and global oil price will affect the cost..and also it should be more than 400 if the cbn DOESN'T PROVIDE FOREX for the transaction because @ 400 naira per liter ,it mean the exchange rate is @ CBN rate
hisgrace090:
But goodluck Jonathan promise to sell at 140 naira without subsidy and we stop him with protest, what makes it now 400 naira without?

Enough of this subsidy stuff and price increase of petrol even if its N500.....
Why do we keep importing fuel and paying fraudulent subsidy prices when we should be thinking of fixing all our refineries and exporting crude from here as it was of old....

Subsidy makes prices too low to make domestic refining profitable...that is why we have very few refineries, and that is one of the main reasons...emphasis on one of the main reasons...why our NNPC refineries are out of commission.

Like now, one liter of fuel costs N400 without subsidy. Nigerians want it at N200 or less, APC supporters want it at N40.

Any investor, even if they are as rich as Dangote, is not going to set up refinery under those conditions. It would mean running the thing at a loss, and any subsidy money paid won't be enough to cover the loss, especially as the source of income is not steady.

If you were selling bread, will you sell a loaf that cost you N800 to buy from the wholesalers, at N200 retail to help the poor.

We tried price controls. We used to subsidise a lot of things. It left us with debts. That's the same reason why a lot of communist countries collapsed. Things, cost, money.

Dangote cement is high because of the value of our naira, and because he still has to pay his workers, raise their salaries, and even import equipment for his factories. And because we don;t supply enough power, thanks to the socialist polices that mean that the price of power is set by government 'to help the poor' for decades...which means not enough profit to keep things running well.

Plus we don't have more refineries because you guys want something that costs N400 to be sold to you at N175...is that fair.

Answer my question before you respond.

I guess u do not know what subsidy is all about, if u want to remove subsidy and u want free flow and less problem in the sector, let it go completely, there is nothing like partial removal, it's words like partial removal that keeps the government stealing and deceiving the gullible masses, let people pay the appropriate price and u will see the scam and the free money those in the sector steals freely will stop

guy you don't know what you are saying total removal of subsidy cannot solve anything until they fight corruption and the neccessary is done.. what have they done with the money they have realised from partial removal of subsidy? embezzled.. to a layman definition removal of subsidy means we pay for what the government is subsidizing and if we pay for it and nothing to show fort for it then what is the essence of paying? if you dont mind the implication of selling of fuel at 400 naira at this point in time then you are a wicked soul.. the only solution to all this subsidy scams is for the government to build functional refineries in Nigeria so that the dollar rate will not determine the fuel price but our local currency should be the factor or determinant [/quote]

The naija fuel subsidy is a big scam that should have been removed by Jonathan if not for the wicked antics of the APC at that point.

My only fear is that the current set of looters will eventually loot every kobo saved from the subsidy removal, instead of using the money to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

You are right…it should be fully deregulated also just like the telecommunication sector, I remember very well that I bought my first mtn line for 35k back then, but it’s literally free sims now, let there be competition among the private refineries

One thing we all should know is that colonialism is still at play over these issues and it is sad that we have leaders who are powerless and toothless. Our leaders can never ever tell their people how powerless they are over these matters.
They don’t want us to have refineries and they want us to forever be dependent on their manipulation. Is it rocket science to build 10 refineries at once? If Buhari could support the building of a refinery in Niger republic, why not in Nigeria? All these things are deliberate to keep impoverishing Nigerians.
In saner climes, states and private businesses build refineries. It is no big deal. In Nigeria, a few latch on subsidy to milk the country while ships of crude leave our shores daily and unaccounted to refineries in other continents. Until we have a crazy daredevil patriotic leader bold enough to clean up the mess, the merry go round will continue.

Ending fuel subsidy without a working refinery will cause more harm than good.
Dangote and PH reginery will soon begin and subsidy will end. Buhari will end subsidy before he handover to Tinubu next year

Isn't it ironic that today Nigerians are praying and striving for a future that was in the past? If a leader/government tomorrow gets Nigeria halfway close to 210 naira per dollar and 140 naira per liter of petrol won't we see that as an accomplishment? That's why I said we are now fighting for a future that was in the not so distant past....chaii!

A future that was in the past?
Very nice observation!

This is the price of petrol in Cameroon but I don't know how they do it such that intercity transport is cheaper than in Nigeria.

A 9 hr journey is 6000 FRS, 8 hrs is 5000 FRS and these prices may be 5000frs and 4000 FRS if it is between Tuesday and Thursday.

Intracity transport is same with ours or ours is lesser

Before subsidy is totally removed, it is important we have relatively stable power supply and the government should invest in state-owned commercial solar buses to reduce the sufferings of ordinary Nigerians.

Which suffering?
People who do not know what to vote, who to vote for and how democracy works for their benefit will always suffer.
Living a decent life requires a minimum level of intelligence.
Suffering on the other hand cleanses the soul.
