Gbajabiamila Deceived Us To Call Off Strike ― ASUU by Deltafirstson(m): 11:24pm On Dec 27, 2022
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, of deception by asking the union to call off its eight-month-old strike in October with a written promise that the government would, without delay, offset in full the arrears of salaries members were owed.

President of the union, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, gave this position on Tuesday in an exclusive interview with Tribune Online when he was asked to reflect on the speaker’s intervention and then vice versa on the current situation of their issues with the Federal Government.

He said ASUU had a soft spot for the speaker and that was why the union engaged him in a discussion as a welcome intervention to resolve the stalemate between it and the Federal Government.

He said Gbajabiamila even presented a paper signed by him to ASUU leadership indicating the seriousness of the government to pay in full the eight-month salaries its members were owed and also urgently attend to some other matters and specified how to address them.

He said part of these concerns were the peculiarities in the controversial Universities Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) and the involvement of the house committee on budget allocation, among others.

He said that based on the Speaker’s intervention then, ASUU suspended the strike with the hope that the Speaker’s words would be matched with action.

He said ASUU members praised him just as the whole world did at the period for his intervention without knowing it was all a deceit.

Osodeke emphasized that ASUU members’ collective impression of Gbajabiamila as of today is that he tricked them to go back to work and then sort out things immediately thereafter.

“But here we are till today, nothing has been done over the promise and that is why the Speaker did not say anything tangible since then at least on the issues let alone ensure that his promises are carried out,” Osodeke stressed.

He said the Speaker would need to come out as he still has the opportunity to prove ASUU wrong on its impression by simply working out the implementation of his promises to the union.

Osodeke, who said ASUU members are only remaining in the classrooms in spite of the unfavourable treatment from the government as a sacrifice for the sake of students and parents as well as the country at large, equally berated the judiciary for hurriedly passing judgment on their matter with the Federal Government by asking ASUU members to go back to work and then adjourned the case till January 26.

He said a sensitive case such as the one between ASUU and Federal Government and particularly with interlocutory injunction should have been addressed in whole and given a speedy hearing and concluded without necessarily being delayed as he said it is currently.

He said the outgoing year is a very bad one for the education sector in Nigeria, noting that great damage had really been done to the sector especially in the last year and across levels by the current administration.

He described the situation as catastrophic and prayed that the next government would be courageous enough to declare a state of emergency in the sector and fix the mess that he said would take up to four or five years to clear.

How were they owed 8 months salaries?

Is it the 8 months they didn't work?

If they are paid for that 8 months they didn't work, what then is their sacrifice?

So it is only the students that should suffer the strike?

No work no pay should be enforced so when any union wants to go on strike, it should be really necessary. Not that when they are tired of going to work, they will just wake up and proceed on strike with one flimsy excuse.

And if the strike is very necessary, I'm sure the public will prevail on the govt to pay full salary after resolution and the govt is found wanting.

Though in my opinion, the govt should give them half of their salary and use the rest to equip university libraries.

We've been over this already, if the government had issues with this points, gbaja should have said so and not just lie
to end the strike..

APC and their trademark of deceit , my only problem are the people they fool, APC has never fooled me, I've always known what they are.

As I wish you happy new year, I pray that 2022 will be the last full year that Nigerians will have the misfortune of living or dying under an APC regime for the foreseeable future.

This ASUU issue will never end until the education sector is fully deregulated.

I heard one presidential candidate promised ASUU strike will never happen under his watch if he wins the election, but his state's ASUU branch went on 13 months strike when he was governor. Big scammer!

Na hunger made ASUU resumed back then. I heard they re yet to receive November salary sef. They should have remained in the strike till all their demands are met. But they compromised, falling o the usual manipulations of APC government.

They better continue enduring like that cos another strike now will make them totally useless as nobody will take them serious.

He said that based on the Speaker’s intervention then, ASUU suspended the strike with the hope that the Speaker’s words would be matched with action.

Honestly, I do not believe that Prof Osodeke, ASUU National Preaident, actually said the quote above because he can not lie so brazenly that it was Hon. Gbaja that persuaded ASUU to call of strike when the whole world can still recall that it was the Industrial Court and later the Appeal Court that upheld the judgement FG got against ASUU to resume duties that compelled ASUU to go back to classes.

Gbaja offered to help but he is not powerful enough to become the whole legislature nor is he the Executive that dragged ASUU to NIC nor is Gbaja the Judiciary that directed ASUU to go back to classes. He had good intentions but the case was already in court.

As we type, ASUU has not even challenged the no work no pay rule in court and FG has used this as a basis not to pay ASUU and other university unions for all the period they were not at work.

If it is true that Prof made this false accusation then it is really sad. As things stand, it is apparent that the FG team is more brilliant and strategic than the ASUU team. This attempt by Prof to misrepresent the facts is not good at all.

The reality is that the era of a united nationwide university academic staff association is gone.

Let's get one thing clear though . ASUU didn't fall for Gbaja-APC schemes and tricks (no one in the country today, with a good head on their shoulders, can be fooled by that party's lies anymore); it was that industrial court's ruling that made ASUU go back!
