Do We Actually Need English Names by Tochex101(m): 7:45am On Sep 04, 2011
I have observed the trend of answering english names as FIRST NAME among many Nigerians and I feel its wrong as we dont even need english names at all.we should be proud of our decent, heritage and culture;let us all do our best to discourage this alien trait in our generation.WE ARE AFRICANS!

True talk, I still wonder why people still answer english names when they are not white.
Answering your native names is better, for me I have said none of my children will have any english name so that they can be easily be identified.

The British left this country over 50 years ago yet Nigerians and Africans at large still continue to be slaves. It's more annoying when people refer to th Foreign names as the "first name" and the native names as the "middle name" or "other name". I changed my first name from James(Hebrew) to Afam(Igbo). James can tale the back sit. James ko Nehemiah ni.

There is a different between English names and christain names. I am for christain names like John, James or peter and against English names like Ashley, Clair or Ross.

@Knowall
Those are not Christian but Jewish(Hebrew) names. Christian names are names that have christian connotation and can be in any language. Names like Chukwudi and Opeoluwa are christian names.

On the contrary, our culture is our identity. Traditional/native names only form a minuscule part of what defines us as a people, there are a whole lot of other aspects of our culture that gives us our identity. In my opinion, I don't see how an African having an "English/German/French" name makes him less of an African than someone who has a native name. "African-ness" is NOT demonstrated by a name, neither is an African identified by his first name; it is his holistic culture that makes him/her an African.

I don't have an English name, both my names are 100% native; but I don't consider myself more "African" than another African who doesn't have a native name. We share a common identity.

Coughs grin grin, and you are writing this in "ENGLISH",aren't ya.
Having an English name does'nt automaticaly decrease your "African-ness", its the experience of it that counts. What good is it to name someone "Chinyere or Olufemi" but they have spent all their life overseas, don't know about their culture??

Blacks in the US took african names during the 70's and 80's but still that does not automatically mean they are now "African", you have to live it and embrace it.
Re: Do We Actually Need English Names by Ladyjide(f): 5:09pm On Sep 04, 2011
No, we dont, I was born in the USA and have kept my Naija name, Most people ask me why don't I have a English name, "my reply is always the same " For What Purpose"? My name has not held me back at any point in my career and I would say has actually been a help.

How body? Hope you are still keeping yourself together for that long awaited romp between yourself and yours truly. wink

@ OP,

I'm wt u on ds. I wonder y I should bear oyinbo are when oyinbo no dey bear chinedu, chukwudi, chukwuma, alabi, seun, tayo, ngozi or eromosele. If their names r good enough for dem then ours is good enough for me!

By d way, y should I bear "gift", "promise", "favour", "obedience", "believe", " God's power", "divine"; etc when those name hav native versions? I think its colomentality. That's y I changed my English name to thick Igbo name.

Some evn say dt its because dey want non natives to b able to pronounce their names, but I ask what abt Mr Schwartznigger, Schwartzsteinger, Ratzinger of Germany or Mr Illyanoslav, Gringonovich, Gorgorov, Krushev, Abramnovich, Sczechny of eastern Europe and Russia, and Katsushiko, Yamasaki, Kawasaki, Yamamuto, Oshitamoto of Japan? Dos guys no send u, its either u arn to call their names or u just shut up! It boils down to inferiority complex.

@ Homerac, you've said it alone. I don't know when our people will cure their inferiiority complex and be proud of their Africaness. I'm still waiting for the day a White will bear typical African names like Chinedu, Merekini etc.
Re: Do We Actually Need English Names by coolgeorge: 6:18pm On Sep 04, 2011
You don't need an English name fellow nairalanders. There are a few circumstances where a variance could be understood. For instance, it is okay if an English man christen you with an English name when you were given birth to and vice versa (When an Afican christen and English man, ). Or in cases where u were given a titled that is in a name in a foreign land. Other than these it simply makes no sense at all.

Re: Do We Actually Need English Names by Nobody: 6:28pm On Sep 04, 2011
Adopting an English name does not make you English, so what's the use?
Re: Do We Actually Need English Names by Mcleo007(m): 6:34pm On Sep 04, 2011
@op, a name is a mere form of identifying individuals from each other. I'd go with u if Ur thread is against the undying affinity most pple have with foreign names(ie shoving African names to the garb or thinking of them as local and uncivilised). Hence, whether my name is Paul, Nelson or Nkono, Rufai, Chinasa doesn't in anyway change my person. I am what I am; name or name. The name only serves to single me out from other proponent beings.eings.

There are several variables that define who you are, and name is one of them. One of the ways they know where you come from is through your name.
