Lagos means Lake in Portuguese.

The Portuguese named Eko, Lagos

I said pronounce you’re talking about naming. They indeed named Lagos and most island in Nigeria on their first arrival.

Do you know that they also taught us how to cultivate the tubers/carbs we consume today….?

Corn, Plantain, Tapioca (Cassava Flakes) and many more were Portuguese food which they taught us.

They really need to bring back History, cause most of you don’t even know the land you live in.

Oba Kosoko of Lagos was against the abolition of slave trade.

I did some further research into that and according to Wikipedia the reason for this was: The proposal was rejected by Kosoko "on the technical reason that Lagos was under the Oba of Benin (traditional ruler and the custodian of the culture of the Edo people and all Edoid people) and that it was only that Oba who could deal with foreign powers concerning the status of Lagos"

Does this further support the recent statements that Lagos actually is an Edo Peoples owned region/state rather Yorubas? Both references from the above quote on Wikipedia are from Nigerian historians.

What did they trade in? You seem t be the one trying to redefine history here.

Do you expect racists to write anything positive about Africans?

Lagos was a farm so they traded food, palm, almond, potatoes, tomatoes, pepper, metal, aluminum, gold, bronze, rare gems, rice, cassava, yam, corn, clothes, masks, wood e.t.c

Why will they invade and colonize Africans if Africans didn't have anything to trade in?

You think too little of Africans because you read and get your history from eu:ropeans or their lackeys in Africa.

Your fathers sold your ancestral lands to attend Owanbe parties and spray money to Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey & Shina Peter, you grow up, instead of you to hustle and know if you can buy the lands back, you sold the remaining one and relocate to Sango, Ikorodu and other suburbs and spray the rest to Wasiu Ayinde, Pasuma Wonder and Small Doctor. Now the buyers of your lands are expanding and consolidating, you begin to cry like babies and start constituting go back to your land nuisance. Oga we are in the lands that we bought from you and will live comfortable on it because we pay you completely and even pay extra while building. You sold your lands and still wants to be landlord, no way. Oga stop crying because you can never eat your cake and have it

The word eko is a bini word.

Here is the ish. Bini kingdom had influence to Lagos and claimed it as a territory but bear in mind there were indigenous people there.

All this story of Yoruba nation and likes are construct of the Europeans. Before the coming of the Europeans, there was no such thing as Yoruba nation and the likes.

https://rss.com/podcasts/themissedhistorypodcast/707617/

Better explains.

Bini never had influence in Lagos or anywhere in Oyo Empire because Lagos didn't exist then. Oba of Bini had an intermediary in the place called Lagos and that's the person you Binis have been over hyping.

Lagos was called Oko which means farm, the Oba of bini's intermediary who the Oba used as diplomat to trade with the Yorubas called it eko because it was heavily militarised by Yoruba women warriors.

Lagos was a farm and commercial point of the Oyo Empire and was occupied by Yoruba warriors and it extended into benin republic and Togo.

Yorubaland and Yoruba people does not end in Nigeria or Lagos, it ends in Togo and some parts of Ghana.

When the Portuguese came they traded with Yorubas in the places now called Lagos, Cotonou and Porto Novo.

Lagos, cotonou and Porto Novo used to be one whole Yoruba farm and commercial point.

All of Lagos State was under politically and Militarily Egbas of Abeokuta Ijebu and Oyo , only Lagos Island was under Oba of Lagos and the entire Island belonged to the Awori Yoruba

Oba Kosoko was playing the British Benin was not in Control of Lagos since before Oba Adele his grandfather
neither did Benin turn up to defend Lagos when the British Bombarded Lagos

Eko is one of the numerous villages and community that makes up Lagos state... Infact Eko is simply few part of Eti Osa and Lagos Island which are sea community

As for Bini ... Oranmiyan is from Ile Ife and paramount ruler of Igodomigodo bini people , Oranmiyan family ruled bini, Oyo, and other environs

Truth is that as much as we claim eko as Lagos. Eko was like you mentioned Lagos island while other areas like mainland Lagos was controlled by the Oyo empire.

And just like it was done in Europe, royals from different kingdoms marry each other for peace and trade. So it's not out of place for a Yoruba prince to be in the bini court and vice versa.

🫢😟 Olodo on the loose. Go read a book about history. Southern Nigeria was were they arrived first, Golf of Guinea was their biggest challenge and it led them to Warri (Escravos/Slave Island).

Portuguese were not interested in Oil but Palm oil and Rubber so they invited the Brits.

In History, Spain and Portuguese are the biggest and most rugged sailors, only them could sails the Golf of Guinea and that’s how they discovered oil.

I know you block heads know nothing, but try read some history.

Tapioca (Cassava Flakes) Is a typical Portuguese word still being mistaken for a native Nigerian language. Jollof rice is actually Portuguese risotto.

And what food do you have that is Pre Colonial..?

I don't need a source.. it's common sense.

All the way from what is now Ondo and some parts of Edo state down to the borders of Togo and Ghana was the Oyo Empire and Yoruba territory.

It will be suicidal of the Binis if they tried to claim anywhere in the Oyo empire due to the fact that Yorubas have a higher population than them and 99% of Yorubas were warriors.

Benin were the ones with warriors. The way you lot twist history to suit Yoruba heritage is actually a disgrace that you lot have no idea what you’re talking about.

Only Benin, UK, and Saudi has the Kingdom title anywhere, and that is for a reason being the vantage point between the Colonials and the Benin Empire.

Yoruba’s we’re still dealing with intertribal conflicts when Benin warriors were being sent to different Souther states including Eko.
