Saifullah01: @tell you, prepare for the normal 'tell me about yourself', 'what are ur weaknesses and strength' and other routine interviw questions.

Then prepare for some question in ur area of specialty both academic (velocity viscosity and those other craps they teach tech guys like u in school) and current/general (what is the name of the body professional engineers or technicians belong to)

Then get some background knowledge on the company ( they may likely ask u what do u know about total)

#justmythoughtsthough.

Tnkz.
Ws helpful.

Hello everyone

I have found this thread very useful and I want to commend you all

pls I need your advice. I m a recent graduate of elect/elect engineering with
+4 cgpa from a good Nigerian fed university.
I have little knowledge about the industry and postgraduate studies abroad. I
intend pursuing a career in the industry mainly oil and gas. The wide options i
have in mind for masters now are :
Cranfield university for process systems Engr.
Elect/elect Engr. @ university of Leeds
Controls systems in any reputable university
Advanced control systems at Manchester
Oil n gas Engr/Subsea Engineering in Aberdeen.

pls which ones are better in terms of:

1. employment prospects (opportunities) after masters
2. The reputation of the university and their quality/standard
3. The value of my masters degree
Any other recommendation for studies in other countries would be appreciated

Thanks in anticipation

Hello gurus in the house. What positions/functions can a holder of an M.Sc degree in Power Engineering (with a B.Eng in Mech Eng) occupy, offshore or onshore in the petroleum industry?

Wow, I started this thread more than 4 years ago when my friend was on the verge of joining total. How time goes.

To your question, very few institutions would increase one's employment prospects these days and there are no guarantees of jobs even after spending thousands of pounds to attend any of the UK institutions you stated above. As your CGPA is above 4, I would ask you to gun for schools in AND outside of the UK, especially in other parts of Europe such as Germany, Netherlands, France, etc.. Schools in these countries are good, but they are under-hyped and under-advertised relative to UK schools. Tu Delf in the Netherlands is expecially popular for oil and gas courses with good placement records. One nairalander, handle name 2good, attended this university on scholarship and was placed in a good oil and gas company afterwards. He has a profile similar to yours..You may want to search for him and contact him directly. Hopefully, he responds to you.

Getting a scholarship at any school within or outside of the UK might be difficult, but the good thing about applying to schools in other countries in Europe is that the costs/fees may be much more bearable as you some of these universities demand little or no tuition fees and you would only need to cover your living expenses which are often not too high. In this case, you would be getting the same Master's degree at a significantly lower cost. In general, studying at a good school outside of the UK does not put one at a disadvantage in relation to those who study in the UK, except of course those studying in the UK are attending the very best schools there.

Another strategy I'll give you to obtain free education, although will generally take longer, is to apply here http://www.aims.ac.za/en/programmes/aims-structured-masters-in-mathematical-sciences/aims-structured-masters-applications-august-intake. If you are taken, attend the programme. It's fully funded. After graduating in one year, you will have a chance to go for any science or engineering courses that interest you, again on full scholarship. I know three people who attended this programme and afterwards went for funded Master's/Phd in oil and gas related courses. One is now a senior engineer at Shell, after working for Total, the other is at Schlumberger UK and the third one is warming up to enter the oil industry.

Thank you sir for sparing your time to respond to my question. I feel encouraged. I will expand my research as you advised .

Pls, this might sound dump but will switching from an EEE background to Oil and gas related courses for Msc affect my career or pose a red flag especially in the core engineering careers in the O&G sector? Or do I stick to my own field?
Thanks

Thanks man. At this level, why would one not.

Even Shell, I've had a shot and that one was very close. I scaled all stages to SRD. Shell had sent me hotel room I will stay in Warri with the invitation for SRD, but due to some inexplicable circumstances, I didn't show up. That was how I lost it. Two of of my other friends that got to that last stage too, one made it and still with them(now in Norway) and the other didn't, but I didn't go at all. That was mid-2008.

They published adverts in newspapers. Shell and other top oil companies publish their graduate trainee programmes.

Their recruitments are well publicised.

please how much do you think a fresh graduate with a b.a human resource management without masters and work experience can be paid in TOTAL?

This is the much I know:
If you don't have work experience, then you are entering as a graduate trainee in Total.
I heard shell pays around 6M per annum and Total pays more ( around 17M) but don't know the accurate figure. Just go back and read the thread from page 1 to get more insight. Masters is just an added advantage which is not necessarily needed at graduate trainee level.

Hope it helps.

Bro, while waiting for the gurus in the house to give an elaborate response, I think he should concentrate on mastering the job aptitude tests and do well in their interviews. Professional certifications are just an added advantage in few cases especially at graduate entry level. But it's good to have them especially HSE or I.T certifications and the likes.
Hope it helps.

Nobody seems to be talking about prospects for Civil Engineers here. I'm a Civil Engineering graduate with a 2:1 and I'm just about two months into NYSC. What needs to be done and what needs not to be done? I hope Civil engineers are not just spectators on this thread(and in the O & G)
BTW, this thread has been bookmarked as I find it quite informative. Can't believe I have spent so much time on a thread created 3years ago. God bless you all as you take time to address my question. Thanks

Hello people!
I am a fresh graduate of petroleum engineering and I intend to benefit from the Total IFP school msc programme. I need to know if I must take TOEFL, GRE, and get an international passport before I can secure an admission into IFP. These are requirements for conventional application for admission into the school as an international student; are there exceptions under the said programme?
please help me with answers, info, guidance.
Thank you!
