Plus all points you guys raise are irrelevant. What is relevant is that selling stuff below what it costs to produce is a ridiculous proposition.

Whatever you think or say, subsidies are not sustainable. You don't have to like it, but then again, that's life.

see what I mean? No long talk about how the wasteful spending and corruption has to go, na just this petrol subsidy. Don't worry, I'm a patient guy. We'll revisit this in a couple of years😎

Wasteful spending is a symptom. It is not the cause.

That subsidy card is maxed out. Played out. Sold!!!

For you it was a magic wand you could tout in theory on as many online platforms as possible. Perhaps you secretly didn't even want the so called subsidy to be removed - just so that you could have a hot button, controversial topic to endlessly debate on.

Well...the 'subsidy' is gone. The problem is that you're suddenly unsure about the outcomes but its too late for you to backtrack and issue caveats and disclaimers. Can you now see what happens to "single issue" voters and advocates? They get roped in by their own arguments.

I saw your plaintive wailing on the Dangote refinery thread and I chuckled to myself. And you claim here that any points opposing yours are "irrelevant" cheesy?

The future is pregnant...and she's almost due.

He was the one that started subsidizing the Naira through his his rigid and strong Naira policy founded on his "I don't believe in devaluation" which promptly ran the economy aground.

Most Nigerians, even or especially University graduates, don't understand this. An inordinately strong naira based on government dictates instead of fundamentals has always been the biggest impediment to economic prosperity in Nigeria.

The ailment is SOCIALIST policies. That's it. Policies that generally encourage government ownership of economic ventures, high taxes, government control of prices and government ownership of land, mineral resources and other factors of production.

That's it....Nigeria is a socialist country. You bemoan WASTE, well government officials tend to be wasteful because the money they manage is not their own. Remember the adage about public business being nobody's business. It's common sense.

These cold war era labels are dangerous.

Wasteful spending is not limited to "socialist" (whatever that means) countries. Is the USA a 'socialist' country? It says it is not - and yet it has not recorded a budget surplus in over 2 decades. Is this (living above one's means) wasteful enough to describe the US as socialist?

Is the UK a socialist country? I would think not. Yet isn't the personal income tax rate 45%? Is that high enough for the UK to be described as socialist?

Is Norway a socialist country? I don't think so - at least not in the classical sense. Yet the state owned oil utility (Equinor ASA) is a major player in Norway's oil industry as well as in 36 other countries. This state owned oil giant is a fantastic example of "government ownership of land, mineral resources and other factors of production". (your words). Is Equinor ASA a good enough reason to call Norway a socialist country?

Is Saudi Arabia a socialist country? grin ( I am waiting for your answer on this one).

The argument continues.

Because he wanted his party to win elections.

Politicians, when faced with elections that need to be won., take wrong economic decisions. That's why subsides on petrol stayed.

This your talk is dishonestly revisionist of the history we all lived through.

Buhari was not interested in winning any election for APC.

In fact he did everything to make APC lose the election.

Starting from the humiliation of Oshiomhole a few years ago, that led Obaseki to join PDP and win the Edo gubernatorial election, it was crystal clear Mr.President and his crew of Northern supremacist did not care what or who they destroyed to ensure power did not get into the hands of a strong Southerner.

Especially someone like Tinubu because they were already working to destroy Nigeria , using the corrupt retention of fuel subsidy and forex rate manipulation the shameless Garba is today trying to spin as an altruistic act, to empower the North.

Garba should shut up and disappear like Namadi Sambo etal. Your time is over and you messed up horribly to leave Nigeria comatose.

Move on, stop talking and be happy you can enjoy your loot ,up North, and not in jail as you deserve to be.

Ulitmately it was in Buhari's interest that APC won the election...because, even though he did not like Tinubu, there is no telling what a PDP or LP government in charge would do.

If a PDP government was in charge, or even LP, by now, Buhari would have been under investigation. Maybe not now, but in several months, he would have been...and it would have been coming very very uncomfortable.

People make a mistake about political parties. Parties are not made of people who love or like each other. They are made of people who get together because they happen to have an interest they need to achieve

Yes, Buhari did make some things hard for tinubu, but ultimately, he did work for APC to win. He had no choice. The alternative is a President Obi or Atiku taking a hard look at his subordinates....

The argument continues.

There's no country that's 100% socialist or capitalist, but you can rank them on a scale. Nigeria is more socialist than capitalist and that's exactly why it's poor. There's other factors that also contribute to economic prosperity and while Norway and the UK have ALL those factors, Nigeria has NONE of them and Saudi Arabia some.

It's also important to note that while socialism generally produces inferior economic outcomes, it can achieve some positive results in homogenous populations. The FAMILY is an excellent example of socialism working well in a homogenous population.

IbeOkehie:
Even if a worker lives below their means and invests diligently in Nigeria over the long term, there's still a high probability they will not accumulate enough for retirement. I define a poor retirement as a significant reduction in living standards after the end of regular, full time work. It considers not just financial standing but health status, security, peace of mind and availability of public & private infrastructure that promote overall wellbeing.

Reasons are many and most of us know it, that the Nigerian political-economy is STRUCTURALLY unsound and thus tends to produce poverty, corruption and violence for EVERYONE, whether working or retired.

The main aspect of that structure manifests in the SOCIALIST basis of the economy, which derives legitimacy from the evolved and popular SOCIALIST culture of the Nigerian populace.

It has been proven by extensive and rigorous research that the likely precursor factors of a prosperous economy are capitalist free markets, demographic homogeneity and democracy. It's unfortunate that NONE of these are present in Nigeria.

Until Nigeria changes it's tendency to SOCIALISM, the economy will always produce poverty for the vast majority of the people whether they're workers, business owners or retirees.

Socialism seems morally right and thus is popular among human beings while free market capitalism seems wicked and selfish and thus is unpopular. The irony is that socialism produces poverty while free market capitalism produces prosperity. undecided

Scandinavian nations generally have the highest standards of living in the world. Many people mistakenly think they're SOCIALIST countries, when they're actually FREE MARKET CAPITALIST nations. The Prime Minister of Denmark had to explicitly explain this. A Scandinavian nation like Sweden has more of a CAPITALIST FREE MARKET ECONOMY than the USA.

Watch here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq3vVbdgMuQ&pp=ygUiV0hBVCBBTUVSSUNBIENBTiBMRUFSTiBGUk9NIFNXRURFTg%3D%3D

Systems matter. Ideology and culture are crucial. Free market capitalism, homogeneity and democracy. That's what Nigeria needs to implement and within two generations it will become prosperous beyond what anyone thinks is possible today for both retired and working people and their families.

Thanks.

Have a good night.
