Lone man repairs highway in Ogun to save motorists from gridlock

Journalists spotted Olanrewaju Adewuyi at his self-assigned public work on Tuesday on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Frustrated by the negligence of the authorities, a man has taken it upon himself to manually fix a damaged portion of a major highway in Ogun State.

Journalists spotted Olanrewaju Adewuyi at his self-assigned public work on Tuesday at Aro Neuropsychiatric Hospital Road on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

The good citizen loaded stones and pebbles in the booth of his Mercedes Benz car, which he was using to fill potholes that had been responsible for gridlock on the highway.

Mr Adewuyi said he considered his effort as a temporary solution pending the intervention of the government.

But he refused to rail at the government, saying citizens sometimes have to lend a hand.

“The government cannot do it all at a time, so the onus lies on us to contribute our own quotas to complement the government’s effort.”

Mr Adewuyi said he uses the road and feels the pain caused motorists and commuters by the failed portions.

“I am also a commercial driver, I often ply this road, but the hold up here since last week has been quite devastating.

“Many cars have broken down and thereby created unexpected spending for owners. So, I decided to do this to free the road of traffic jams,” Mr Adewuyi said.

Onlookers and motorists praised Mr Adewuyi for his public spiritedness.

A trader whose shop was near where Mr Adewuyi was working, Yemisi Adebayo, and a motorist, Ibiobami Joseph, commended his action and urged the state government to do the needful to fix the road quickly.

This is commendable. This is one creative and constructive way to help others and draw the attention of govt to the situation. Those typing and insulting govts upandan will rather use their money to buy data and idle away online to insult everyone. They change nothing, they contribute nothing.

There's no country in the world where only govt does everything. Each patriotic citizen can lend a hand like Mr Adewuyi has done and is doing. There's a special blessing from the land for him as well.

All we need as a nation is more patriotic and hardworking citizens like him and none of the lazy, hatefilled and unpatriotic losers.

try this in Lagos, Agbero will charge you for your goodwill. One rich man wanted to repair road for the street with his own money, the Baale demanded money for omo onile.

There are many nice people in this country but society we live in is BLACK. Government dont help, people that will help are discouraged.

This is what people do in America for free and without looking back. When the country's leader is doing his best to make the people smile and not make them cry, people always reciprocate in one way or the other.

Millions of people across the globe today were beneficiaries of scholarships from lone sponsors in America, Germany and some parts of Asia. Many of them died centuries ago, when most of the beneficiaries were yet to be born.
.
Here in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. How do you expect companies and individuals to embark on such a just cause when their leaders are thieves and their children are beneficiary of fraud dealings orchestrated by their fathers? There are people in Nigeria who can refurbish national stadium free of charge even build and donate an airport or a hanger to the federal government. But how can they do this when Hadi Sirika, the immediate past aviation minister was involved in the Nigeria Air scam?

I know of 2 Nigerians in America who built houses, libraries, organised coaching classes, etc for the people in their communities without expecting anything in return. It's because their leaders are helping the people. They make the environment liveable and business-friendly. One of them is in north carolina he's a multi billionaire silently, maybe cos of his religious and modest lifestyle. He owns one of the leading sewage companies over there. The other was an ibadan-born mechanic who migrated in the early 80s. He owns one of the famous auto garages in America located in Buffalo, NY today

Nigeria craves a leader who would lead by example. The one who would guarantee people's sense of belonging in the Nigerian project. We're not there yet.

This ogun man deserves some encouragement

must you make the post about Southwest vs south east??

Don't y'all on Nairaland get tired of abusing each other based on tribe?

Do y'all have something meaningful to do with your lives other than to cause tribal war on nairaland?

My point is, y'all should reduce this hatred you have for each other.....

Them swear for una ni
