I still don't understand the business case for this railway project

It is on record that Abuja-Kaduna rail generates N500m monthly after deploying e-ticketing and believe me if Lagos-Ibadan and Warri-Itakpe will get the same system Nigeria will generate not less than N3b from Railway services monthly and is more comfortable compared to road transport. You guys need to commend good things!

We never finish train from Lagos to Abuja… trains that will take only 4 hours of travel within two major cities. We are building to Niger??

Why not do rail from apapa port link dangote refinery and then send it to Lokoja and link Calabar and North from there

I still don't understand how the legislative arm sat and allow Buhari to go ahead with this senseless project...

How can you help another country to build rail, and Niger is a volatile region. This will only aid the importation of bad element from neighboring countries into Nigeria

All of the people who commented above are very ignorant apart from you perhaps.

Though you are sensible in your opinion of which I agree completely with you.

The importance of the rail line to Niger cannot be overemphasized considering the fact that Niger is a landlocked country all of their imports will be routed through Nigeria to the seaport in Lagos.

Niger travelled all the way to Benin Republic for all their imports and exports. The cost to Niger is high compared to when a good rail network is available through Nigeria to Lagos seaport.

The goods will further go up North Africa.

Therefore the project is a massive gain to Nigeria.

I'm from South South precisely Rivers State so you wouldn't bring in the ethnic thing.

If Nigeria had surplus, I would have commended your post. But since Nigeria is borrowing to build railway, then it would have been best for us to build such railway between Nigerias economic centres. It will ease the stress on our roads and cars. The money saved from fueling cars will be spent on other things.

But as it stands, you are basing your projection purely on hope. What is the purchasing power of the Nigeriens to afford Nigerian goods that will be relatively expensive to them? Why would the Nigeriens abandon the Port of Cotonou which is a tried and trusted route for Nigerias railway situated deep inside ISWAP territory? With the far longer days it takes to clear goods from Nigerian port, why would the Nigeriens pick Lagos over Cotonou? There are plethora of questions begging for answers.

I think Amaechi goofed on this whilst trying to please the North. Ordinarily, Charity begins at home. It would have served Nigerians and Riverians in particular if he built a functional rail from PH to Aba and then Enugu upto Benue.

Can this project repay even 20% of its cost in 10 years?

In continuation of the movement of ND resource to develop NE,NC and NW, they will stop more subsidies to repay for this project. God!
It can't, that route isn't that lucrative. Couple with insecurity

Kano is like Lagos to northerners, including neighbouring countries like Niger and Chad. It would have make more sense if Kaduna is linked to Kano first.
But Buhari knew subsequent government might not extend the rail beyond Kano, reason he embark on Kano to Maradi which will pass through Daura.

Are you aware that Kaduna to Kano rail is currently under construction?

In less than 2 years that kind will be done.. At this new line and people will able to move from Abuja straight to maradi(Niger)

Lamba!

How many massive gains have trading with Niger brought to Benin republic ?

This project is a huge security risk to Nigeria, this train route will be used to smuggle scarce resources from Nigeria and also import extremist into the country

How ever you look at it this project is all wrong!!

The rail way would have been better and economic viable if it link between cotonou and Nigeria but Buhari wouldn't do that because of tribalism, I don't think anything positive will come out after completion of The project, it can only increase insecurity and high population in Nigeria.
I haven't seen any reasonable business that are own by Niger citizen, they only export shoe mender and amajiri to Nigeria.

ObaIgwe1:

Actually the project makes economic sense if carefully implemented.

Niger is a landlock country which until now makes more use of Benin Republic Ports than Nigeria ports because Nigeria Import duties are higher. With a train line from ports in Nigeria to Niger, they will be encouraged to use Nigeria ports more because it will be cheaper on the long run compare to using Benin republic ports with trucks for onward movement of cargoes from Benin to Niger. This cheap Train logistic solution will make Nigerian ports desirable.

2ndly, Niger just discovered more oil wells in commercial quantities, they will need a reliable transportation to move it to the ports....with availability of rail line between Niger and Nigeria, Nigeria will benefit a lot from their oil business.

So the project makes sense.
Niger GDP is less than that of IMO state

What's the volume of trade between Nigeria and Niger?

Cameroon our biggest trade partner in Africa we never build rail na Niger way GDP no reach most States in Nigeria smh

Niger oil is less than 100k barrels per day around 20k

Bro u must be joking. Do u know how many people are boarding plane every day at high price? I can't calculate how many planes are passing over my roof daily yet people say they is no money on ground.. Imagine Railway that is more cheaper conveying people with zero stress, comfortability for average people. Northerners like to travel and u know the population. Imagine a train ticket to Maradi is 20k and full train 🚆 is conveying 3000 people and it possible to go 2x daily. Calculate 20'000*3000 (6k to & fro)=? That's a whooping 120M per day multiply by 1 month, that's roughly 3.6bn monthly and it a whooping 43.2bn or more

Think of it when it starts running within all the state i.e all the states are interconnected, Railway will be the deadliest agency in terms of revenue generation. Average n rich people can book it, unlike planes.
