The one they built within can not repay its cost in 100 years yet they are building more and removing subsidies to fund what, in my estimate, 75% of Nigerians cannot make use of. Wonderful economic policies of Tinubu and Buhari.

BIG FAT LIES

Nobody expect you to praise the government you oppose....does that mean you should wish citizens including your friends and family bad?

Waste of scarce resources
Had it been that similar rail lines exist in the Eastern corridor of Nigeria from where Nigeria gets much of its oil and gas revenues that will be used to repay the Chinese loans..
When they say that Nigeria is not one country as far as the descendants of Othman Dan Fodio are concerned, it's no lie. They are just waiting for rejoining their far north of Nigeria to Niger 🇳🇪 Republic any time Nigeria dissolves inevitably.

Buhari was a generational mistake who missteps will continue to haunt Nigeria for a while.

He wasted 8 solid years of this country.

All of the people who commented above are very ignorant apart from you perhaps.

Though you are sensible in your opinion of which I agree completely with you.

The importance of the rail line to Niger cannot be overemphasized considering the fact that Niger is a landlocked country all of their imports will be routed through Nigeria to the seaport in Lagos.

Niger travelled all the way to Benin Republic for all their imports and exports. The cost to Niger is high compared to when a good rail network is available through Nigeria to Lagos seaport.

The goods will further go up North Africa.

Therefore the project is a massive gain to Nigeria.

I'm from South South precisely Rivers State so you wouldn't bring in the ethnic thing.

will you keep quiet, so how will the goods get from Lagos to Kano since there is no standard gauge connecting the two cities yet. Just open mouth dey yan dust. This government will favour me and my Family.

The business case is for Niger, her neighbors, and other northern African countries to resume clearing of their containers in Nigeria again, after long years since they have switched to Benin Republic and Togo due to our bad roads.

Now that the train us working again, Nigeria signed an agreement with those countries that they would be clearing their goods through Lagos and Onne and Calabar.

so how will the goods get from Lagos to Kano since there is no standard gauge connecting the two cities yet

No adequate train services within the country And you made build to run on right to the state capital of another man's country. What stops us from taking it to their boarder Nd telling them to complete it to their states capital. Even with this outrageous price

Sadly, not all the southerners because of religious fanaticism of South-Western Muslim and tribalism of even some Christiam Yoruba.

That's what I'm saying. Train is not expected to sustain itself! It requires government spending. The effect of train is to spur economic growth, if that is not happening then blame those in charge of the economy or the people not utilizing the advantage.

Yes train revenues are meagre compare to cost of construction that's why private companies rarely engage in construction and operations but they are mostly financed by government revenues and loans all over the world.
So you agree Nigeria don't need it right now based on our economic reality

The most reasonable thing Tinubu can do now is to ignore and then cancel this monumental waste in Public funds orchestrated by no other reason but sentimental reason by Buhari. It will only be justified if Niger stops being a republic and decide to become Nigeria's 37th state

Donkey! That's a statement NOT QUESTION. Such fictitious project is linking your Kano through Niger to fouta Djallon; not my Nigeria.

You are not aware that the desire for oil is vanishing fast that small oil some countries have is enough for their needs.

Actually the project makes economic sense if carefully implemented.

Niger is a landlock country which until now makes more use of Benin Republic Ports than Nigeria ports because Nigeria Import duties are higher. With a train line from ports in Nigeria to Niger, they will be encouraged to use Nigeria ports more because it will be cheaper on the long run compare to using Benin republic ports with trucks for onward movement of cargoes from Benin to Niger. This cheap Train logistic solution will make Nigerian ports desirable.

2ndly, Niger just discovered more oil wells in commercial quantities, they will need a reliable transportation to move it to the ports....with availability of rail line between Niger and Nigeria, Nigeria will benefit a lot from their oil business.

So the project makes sense.

Of what economic benefits...
Majority of Nigeriens hate Nigeria regardless of religion.
Why not like Kano and Lagos

Monumental waste. Route to ferry bandits to the country. The economically viable coastal railway and Lagos Abuja route was abandoned by Buhari in favor of the bandits infested Nigerien route to his fatherland.

They are taking the standard gauge from Ibadan to Kano. That’s another phase of the development.

With the narrow gauge, train can still get to Kano from Lagos.

Obasanjo wasn’t a serious president, he could have finished the standard gauge since. He only initiated the project and did a few of geo-physical survey on the rail lines but that’s where the whole thing stopped.

We actually do. That's why I emphasize that we need to construct on high traffic corridors. Like the kano-Lagos and the east-west corridors. We don't need to connect all states for now.
These 3 corridors should go a long way in facilitating trade and stimulating economy.
Not all states need to be connected not all region also.
1 Just connect maradi-kano-kaduna - Abuja-minna-(bida/major agricultural hub in Niger, especially with the Bua sugar refinary coming up and major agriculture hub that'll spring up btw Niger and kwara state) - ilorin - ibadan - Lagos.

2.lagos - sagamu (major industrial hub) - Benin - Asaba-onitcha - owerri - Aba (here you don't need Umahi as aba is of the more economic importance) - Portharcourt.

3. Warri - Itakpe (linking major mineral processing site Kogi stats,)

Yeah and the government will need to budget the cost servicing and maintenance running into billions of naira yearly.
