Kano Battles Malnutrition As 1.5m Children Under Five At Risk
Kano State alone in the North-West has 1.5 million children under five years of age who are stunted, representing over 10 percent of the country's burden.

According to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, Nigeria has about 19.8 million children who are malnourished, giving Nigeria the highest burden of stunting in Africa and the second highest in the world.

About 70 percent of children under five are anaemic as child nutrition is core to human capital development in Nigeria. This presents an urgent crisis that needs to be addressed.

Kano State alone in the North-West has 1.5 million children under five years of age who are stunted, representing over 10 percent of the country’s burden.

When Channels Television visited Ungwan Ukwu Primary Healthcare Centre in Kano, children under five years were observed receiving medical attention for acute malnutrition and other related ailments.

The faces of the children told of the scourge of malnutrition, particularly in our rural communities.

Arira Umar, whose three-year-old son Ahmed was severely malnourished, could not sit or stand.

The situation was the same with Abdulmalik, who was 18 months but had the weight of a three-month-old child.

His mother came all the way from Katsina State to seek treatment for him.

The children are among several captured in a recent survey on infant and young child feeding practices in children aged 0 to 23 months.

For Kano State, the situation is dire as only 10.1 percent of babies are exclusively breastfed; 15.7 percent of them are fed with minimum diet diversity, and a mere 10.6 percent receive food from animal sources such as meat, milk and eggs.

Donor organisations are collaborating with the Kano Ministry of Health to bring treatment for malnourished children and have treated over 50,000 children so far but the challenge is enormous.

Ready-to-use therapeutic food (RTF) is often deployed at the centre but was insufficient to meet the huge demand.

The challenges notwithstanding, the Kano State Nutrition Coordinator said the government was willing to tackle malnutrition.

Education of mothers would be key, the Matron of the Angwan-Ukwu Health Centre, Hasiya Yerima, said that mothers who visit the facility are sensitised on good nutrition from proper breastfeeding.

For those who make it to health facilities like this, there is hope still. Recovering Farida who was breastfeeding her late sister’s child and Amina who is a mother of twins could smile as their children had become playful once again.

Another big problem in nigeria is majority of the parents born children more than their financial ability''' especially the north, giving birth like dogs. Giving the innocent kids a very bitter and cruel life''

They are more focused on banning the Kano state indigenous people from listening to Davido Songs over Logos Olori's 'Jaye Lo' and the Video tongue

Then take a tour across communities and settlements in the state.

This is my sector, overwhelming majority of children across Nigeria are not developing properly: poor nutrition, low weight, poor healthcare services, iodine deficiency disorder which causes many children to struggle with impaired cognition and very evident in poor academic performance and when most become adults, nothing much is in their brain.

And they are deceiving themselves with needless flyovers in Kano City? Abia which they mock has the least number of poor people. The so called bad road is being fixed statewide

Maybe you are from SW and don't travel around but believe in media propaganda. I discover that yorubas are in the habit of praising the North. If you know the North very well you will understand that it's extremely backwards place. All they do is paint the state capital and you will be hailing them while the over 80% of the state live in stone age.
Kano has 10.5 million poor people. That's almost 90% if their population. But they are building nonesense flyovers and you are praising them

I wonder how much you need to earn to have a decent three square meal in present day Nigeria.

Back in Chinua Achebe days, things were falling apart and the centre couldn't hold it but right now, the things oo, the apart ooo, the falling ooo even the centre join everything don scatter like that Fireboy hit song

It's not Tinubu
Kano criminals leaders, who specialises in wedding uninterested couples, have abandoned their children.
Leadership is not wedding ceremony, but terrorist ridden Islamic North believe otherwise

How did you reckon him to be "an obidient Igbo man"? Y'all always seem to forget that they were three major contestants during the elections. Millions of folks who did not vote for Tinubu, voted for Atiku. But everytime you people see someone who probably didn't support Tinubu, you quickly adjudge him/her to be an "Obidient Igbo man".

0ur children's live matters.

post=123193760:

A better Nigeria 🇳🇬 all around is all we want at .

We will keep saying this : These kids below are the ones that need wardrobe allowance or food in their belly or fuel for transportation to their various schoos, or anything increament in their lives.

And vehicles that will be taking them to and from school.
Not our senators or any , retired, sitting, standing or crawling politicians or any other PARASTATALS .

Talking about those Senator's,
Majority of our Senators since '99 have been total disgrace,
When it comes to spending money that comes to themselves and their associate, there would be an upward review and it would be implemented as quickly as possible.
However, when it comes to what would benefit the common man for example minimum wage, they would take forever to review it.

Something must urgently be done about this.

We Rise.

I thought you said a region that wasn't practicing islam well couldn't advance so how come they are better than those that practice it?

Some would argue that the country should produce more food to overcome hunger.

What many fail to realize that the primary cause of hunger isn't a lack of food but a lack of money. Poverty is what fuels hunger.

Many of the chronacally malnourished children here are offsprings of farmers. The North which is the breadbasket of the country has the highest levels of malnourished children.

One way to help the poor is through Conditional Cash Transfer but without a proper database of the neediest families and how to reach them, this is dead on arrival.
