The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has suspended the Airport Taxi Services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja with immediate effect.

The suspension, FAAN said, followed the lingering factional crisis among the car hire operators.

This, the authority stated, had been affecting airport car hire service operations.

Director, Public Affairs & Consumer Protection of FAAN, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua in a statement urged airport users to use alternative transportation means.

The statement read: “The FAAN wishes to inform the general public that the airport car hire service at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja has been suspended with immediate effect.

“This is as a result of the unresolved factional dispute amongst the car hire operators which has been affecting airport car hire service operations.

“Consequent upon this suspension, FAAN Management advises the general public and all airport users, particularly our esteemed passengers to use secured alternative means of transportation or E-hailing services in and out of the airport.

“The Management of FAAN regrets any inconvenience this necessary suspension may cause our esteemed passengers, airport users and the general public. Normal Car Hire Services resume as soon as their differences are resolved.”

student union, taxi union, keke union, even landlords get union..

Even here, Lebanese, Columbians & Chinese will come make their money and go… naija will come and start doing union. b4 u know it they start having disputes.

One idiot I met the other day said I’m not in their union, if anything happen to me they will not come, idiot wey never visit home for almost a decade Dey do union..

I feel this is just an attempt to create market for Bolt and similar platforms.

Those airport cabs don't allow bolt drivers tompick passengers at the airport.

What could this mean for travellers?
From my experience, it means cheaper fares because there's now more competition.

What could this mean for the government?
I feel it means reduced revenue. But it's extra bucks for oga at the top because Bolt and similar platforms could have settled them heavily.

I think government should empower bolt drivers against those Abuja agberos (yes, there are agberos in Abuja, just like every part of the country). People should have the freedom to choose between drop rides and park rides. That's more important than banning the airport cabs.

This is because the union or association at the airport will demand they make a ridiculous fee for picking passengers which will undermine whatever profit they will make from the ride itself.

The situation is so bad that when I do not have much luggage, I walk down towards the exit road which allows me negotiate at regular abuja taxi rate rather than airport rate. For me, this ban is a good development and to the benefit of the passengers

Airport pickup or drop off can be as high as 8k when fuel was 187 because of the taxi union . I can’t imagine what it is now

This is because

- The distance from the city center where you're likely to have a concentration of bolt and uber taxis to the airport is about 35Km. So no cab guy is going to drive that distance just for a pick-up.

- Even if by happenstance, a cab driver is rounding up a trip anywhere close to the airport, he/she still won't accept a ride request from the airport because of the stress of having to pay the toll, go through checks, stress to find a packing spot, etc.

- Airport authorities have always had very stiff regulations against allowing external taxis pick up fares from the airport, for reasons best known to them and their greedy throats. So drivers avoid the airports altogether, except the airport taxis themselves who basically station there.
