yamakuza:

CISA or any other ISACA cert might get you further than CISSP.

Another thing, since you are outside Nigeria, getting experience should be easier.

Plenty of online security jobs, especially Penetration Testing and CyberForensics.
The pay shouldnt matter at this stage na?

Hope you've googled those companies? If you package yourself very well where you are, you can even give them a run for their money.

you mean even one with a masters degree in computer forensic still can not fit anywhere 4 a start?!

I think MTN advert was for financial auditor.
I am not so sure but I didnt apply then cos I didnt meet the spec.
I am a recent graduate(MSc). I finished my BSc in 2005 and worked in the bank(marketing) before going into computer forensics
Everyone wants someone with experience sad

@justwise: from all the above will it not be a good idea for nigerians with relevant certifications 2 come together and form a training & certificatn body so that graduands can become employable once they graduate?
Am talkn about holders of CEH, CSSP etc

Have to agree with u here, if somebody with Msc in computer forensics can't get an entry job in this industry in Nigeria then there is no point trying.

It will be a very good idea but since there a body already working towards that direction maybe we should all join hands and make it work.

Do you think that any Forensic agency formed outside Nigerian law will be recognized in court of law?

No.
But there no such agency 4 now and foreigners has actualy bn recognized by the court in Osun state some 3yrs ago in the multiple thumprinting issue! A training institute will not be allowed to transform to an agency, an I believe like in Germamy forensic experience and requisite training comes by manx route. I am hoping the Nigerian factor is not already playing out.

I hope u get where am comin from.
Will try to join anyway grin

I do understand where you are coming from, i don't know much about the new law about digital forensics in Nigeria.
Can an individual or group register with any govt body to practice as independent forensics expert?

I guess until someone tries to do that-the region of constitutional law-who can tell?

Average rtd personel in Nigeria or anywhere 4 that matter does not want 2 be the guinea pig of experimentation. One thing I assure you is that Nigerians are very smart and agressive in advertising!

I still can't make sence of the structure of the training outfit suggested by despam and yamakuza.

Have you seen Nigerian Police at a crime scene before? It's all jokes!

Forensic IT is more complicated because having a tenable chain of custody takes skill and years of practice not to talk of Premier certifications to your name like GPen, CISSP, CHFI, CISA etc.

I don't think you can learn anything in foresnsic IT in Nigeria until we start taking IT security serious.

I know of Radiography practise in this country. The diploma used to be from London until those who qualified began "producing" their Nigerian version of radiographers.

Anyone who wants to be a radiographer can verify all there is to know about the body and that's genuiness and transparency.

I think we should find out how an individual can register or get a licence to practice as a forensic expert so that when you present ur evidence in court it will not be dismissed. A forensic expert can't get hold of suspect's hard drive or any electronic device without some sort of authority.

I think a Nig police lawyer will know better regarding what is the usual practise for a valid seisure.

I think one should hear from those who has presented such electronic evidence in the past:were they regarded as experts (recognised by law) or simply as "knowledgeable" in the field of forensic? or were they treated as coming from EFCC, ICPC, NDLEA etc?

But 1st, no one is authourised in the constitution to issue such licenses--or is there?

Hello everyone,
Iam an IT Specialist, specialist in different I fields, i have been researching into Computer Forensics and i av to opine wot others say about CFIN, its welcomed but the way they carry on seems dubious at best(not that i say they are dubious). As at yesterday i was stil discussing with a comm of police who we are trainin in my institution here about this issue and he says a commitee is already setup working with the national assembly to form an inter-agency Fforensic arm.He says they re stil workin on Legal frameworks to incluse hiring, etc etc. thats the latest i knw bout govt's part

As for computer forensics, if u re an IT person, pls lay your hands on basic computer forensic's books, you will be surprised at how easy it is to learn. Learning how to harvvest information from OS registries and stuff.

THe best advise i wld giv is to equip urself for the oppurtunity that is about to breakout in the Forensics field. If it means gettin international certification, get it,

For now i train security personnels on Basic and Intermediate computer forensics in Abuja but i cant certify them, i train them to write int'l certifications and they are pushing for ENCASE too, so all yu can do is equip urself, resources abound on the internet, all u can do is search, and that wld be your first attempt at Computer forensics, lol

if yu re in Abuja u can reach me and i can help with materials, and point you in a good direction,

ITs a wide field, but you can start from the basics before specializing,

What forensic tools do you use for the training?
Re: Computer Forensics In Nigeria - Is It Recognized? by Isuata: 4:59pm On Nov 05, 2011
TCT--coroner's toolkit
Helix
Access Data FTK

and other tools i call crude tools, i just teach my students on ow to use them in forensic scenarios,

HBCD
Backtrack, etc

in fact there is a game i make availaible to them that teaches as you play how to secure and hack networks/Files , just makin it fun, lol

Note:Iam not a certified Forensic Investigator, iam only versed in ways of ethical hacking/Forensics as iam an IT specialist and need to secure my networks.
The bulk of my students hav written CHFI of Eccouncil, seems like the recognised certification in naija yet, as EC-Council has an official presence in Lagos.

i stumbled on an ENCASE software version recently through google, i am still checking it out sha, to see how to adapt it ,

Prevoius laws were not explicit on the admissibility of digital evidences but the followin icpc act opens doors,

The ICPC Act 2000, Section 57 (b) states that “ any document
or copy of any document or photographic electronic evidence or
thing seized from any person or however obtained… shall be
admissible in evidence in any proceedings under this Act
before any court,…”
