Yoruba made movies before Ibos started recording VCDs.
The industry is called Nollywood not the format. It is like saying Hollywood or Bollywood started with videos cassettes or streaming.
If the movie industry in Nigeria is called Nollywood then Yoruba started it. This is based on facts and history.
Yorubas active in theatre productions and TV operas...

The New Masquerade can compete with any such productions from the South West but it cannot be called Nollywood...

It is some countries in Africa whose film space is virtually inactive and unknown...

Are you saying that if a section in those countries take it upon themselves to revive and globalize the industry in their countries, then certain elements who had some mundane efforts which were unable traction, can pop up and begin to ascribe the success to themselves?

Oga, give honour to the deserving...

The following are the basic factors of identifying eboes

hairiness
Alien head shape
Deep beer voice
Body and mouth odour
That is definitely not what those Yoruba touts used as a means of identification.

If it was, they wouldn't have missed plenty of yorubas with the bad mouth and body odour.

Keep deceiving yourself. Yoruba theatre of that period were in fact touring troupes, they only filmed for television.Ogunde was the first one who took control of his own marketing, followed by Ade Love, Baba Sala & co. Yes they predated Nollywood but they weren't Nollywood.

Some people actually think that Nollywood started with 'Living In Bondage ' and 'Domitila'. Smh.

Aisha is even schooling them for free when they should be paying to recieve this kind of knowledge.

Everything about entertainment in Africa, from the first TV station to the first stadium etc, has its root in Ibadan, the heart of Yorubaland through the vision of our forebears. Thank you Aisha for the free education you are giving them.

Entertainment business is total package and it's bringing in billions into Nigeria through the Nigerian music, sports and film industry pioneered by the Yoruba and still owned by the Yoruba.

The chart bursting Nollywood films are produced in Yoruba but subtitled in English, Asake sings in Yoruba, all the Nigerian music Stars that performed at his UK show, including Tunde Baiyewu of Light House, are Nigerians and Yoruba with link to Nollywood. Most of those sound tracks in Yoruba films come from these Yoruba global Musicians.

Even Gospel musicians like Tope Alabi are connected to Nollywood while World Boxing Champion Anthony Olufemi Joshua, World Athletics record-holder Tobi Amusan, along with Odunlade Adekola, Olamide, Teni and others are Glo Ambassadors, Iya Rainbow, Lateef Adedimeji, Dele Odule from Nollywood as Airtel Ambassadors, with their faces all over local and international Nigerian entertainment contents sponsorship.

Yoruba started Nollywood when the rest of Nigeria and Africa had not even seen or watched a TV in their lives and the Yoruba still own Nollywood till date.

The Yoruba can teach others in Nigeria and Africa how they sustain this global feat and dominance of entertainment if others are humble enough to learn from the Yoruba. We are all Nigerians/Africans and we can learn from one another. Check my signature for free stuffs!
Nollywood is one of Africa’s most successful film industries and brings billions of dollars annually. Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian author who released “Things Fall Apart” in 1958, is credited with starting it all. He wanted to make films but had no idea how to make one. Instead, he authored “The Education Of A British-Protected Child,” which became his most famous work. The book speaks about how to establish a film company from scratch. He sent the book for publication abroad due to the political unrest in Nigeria, and it was never accepted. However, the book got published by Oxford University Press in 1975.

Anything started never made sense until Igbos gets involved…

Igbos have this specialty in turning dust into bread aswear just give it to them.

Not saying that other tribes are not also outstanding but then there is this different kind of force, enthusiasm, charisma, bravery, resilience and progress and Igbo man commands when he seriously gets involved in anything and I believe this explains the reason they have been able to survive the war to be where they are today.

Reason you will see and Igbo boy who came to lagos with Ghana must go and in 5 years he is living in his own house and all…their magic they shock me.

Hollywood, Bollywood and others all over the world all started from cinemas then into videos and so on.

There is a reason the world wouldn't forget the inventors of most tools we use today like cars, phones etc.

In simple words,Yorubas invented cheesy Nollywood before you know what acting is all about..

So yoruba started acting? No. Yoruba started showing acting on TV. Igbo started recording acting as home videos. Nollywood is the commercial aspect which goes beyond acting. Igbo dominated marketing and distribution, the livewire of Nollywood

So Hollywood and Bollywood started with VHS tapes?

The first television station in Nigeria and Africa, the Western Nigerian Government Broadcasting Corporation (WNTV) began broadcasting on 31 October 1959 in Ibadan. That's when Nigerian indigenous films a.k.a Nollywood started. It started in the West and later expanded to other regions of Nigeria wink Stop being confused.

Prior to 1959, there was no TV so there was no transmission of films to mass audiences and no Nollywood. In the west, prior to 1959, there were already professional actors in Yorubaland but they perform on stage as travelling film group. They were the ones who were the first to get their contents on TV in 1959 in the west birthing Nollywood in the process

This is Nigeria and we should be thankful for our diversity and the need to celebrate it. There is not a single tribe who can do everything but with collective efforts, we have something to celebrate.

However, the yorubas have always set the pace but the fame and wealth to which nollywood have today was built by the foundation of the igbos.

So arguing about who started movies will not help anyone.

You think there were no localized old skul igbo raps too. I remember my uncle playing songs where there were rapping about "nkwu ocha" ( palm wine) in the early 90s. I don't even know the name of the artists. Many such childhood old skul raps, you people take too much advantage of Lagos influence to claim a lot of things. Na that my uncle suppose come finish you. I'm talking about modern naija hip hop. Present generation of yorubas think that phyno is first igbo rapper just because others didn't move to Lagos that's my point. Not about your 18 century Lagos rap. Others also had their own at the same period

Herbert Ogunde and Moses Olaiya were pioneers in the 1960s.

FreeStuffsNG you need to understand the point igwebuike01 is making. There was a time the Igbos dominated and controlled the Nollywood mainstream. A huge percentage of movie distributors back then were Igbos.

With the decline in CD Cassette and introduction of more sophisticated means of movie distribution, the Yorubas started gradually seizing their pie of the cake. Flooded streaming platforms with their contents and are now telling their stories. This wouldn't have been possible if we were in 2006 when movies where distributed in Idumota and Upper iweaka by Igbo investors.

Should we discredit the efforts of the Igbos? No

Does this means the Yorubas didn't make contributions to the growth of Nollywood? No. Infact I watched a number of Yoruba movies in Warri in the 2000's, but majority of movies distributed then were done by Igbos.

We can appreciate Yorubas current dominance in the mainstream but you shouldn't take away the efforts of those who made Nollywood, Nollywood.

Nobody is taking any credit away from anybody...

The question is who started the film industry in Nigeria-- simple!

She should keep quiet, the Yoruba part of Nollywood never penetrated anywhere except youruba land and Yoruba natives, the part of Nollywood that brought about the breakthrough in the Nigerian film industry is the Nollywood that involved mainly the igbos and other producers and actors from the south-south, Herbert ogunde and co where big we know, but the real exposure came when living in bondage and co where released and nobody can take that away from the igbos who where a serious driving force then in the marketing and distribution of the films, all them Andy beat and co was way popular than any Yoruba film distributor or marketing person's and the reason why the Yoruba even have any aspect of Nollywood today is just because of lagos and that it is the big city that Igbo Nollywood always uses to shoot their big city movies,so make nobody try take the success of the growth of Nollywood away from the igbos at all,me I nor dey like partiality at all.

Most of the big city movies shot by Igbo producers were actually done in the East, so...

People coming out to call acts done on stage and in theatres movies just because it was displayed on TV. Dumb dumber dumbest.
If it is not madness, I wonder what it is.

You say you started doing Nollywood, please the Nollywood you started , did it have locations as well or your movies were shot in just 1 space?

If it is not madness that will make me argue with someone like freestuffng. Someone who runs away from issues that affects him and he has no say over. Someone who runs away like a bleeped dog when faced with issues concerning his tribe but jumps around like a happy baby goat when he goes online for hours searching for 1 post that he will bring to nairaland to demarketize the Igbos..... Only a coward walks in such path.

Funny how dull and unintelligent people go around seeking for places where their tribe is doing better than the other but shy away when there tribe has internal issues.

Now he has gone to bring a post from a fellow unintelligent Yoruba lost sheep saying they own Nollywood.

Do these people know what Nollywood is Abi they just think it is to watch God's creations on TV.
