This man is showing us that we can build a house with bamboo, but hatred have made people to start talking rubbish without finding out how it works.Allow the house to be completed and see if it will collapse less than expected.

I hate it when people start giving insights into things they know nothing about. FYI, bamboo have a higher tensile strength than iron rods and it is actually a very good replacement for it. It's very unconventional, agreed, but using bamboo does not affect the integrity of the structure, it actually is a very good alternative. That's coming from a material science engineer, that also took time to do the research before he made this comment.
Don't misinform the public. I can figure out where you must have studied is definitely not among the top schools.
Here's an authoritative report on why bamboo has less tensile strength

There are few concerns about bamboo before declaring whether it can be used as a substitute of steel in concrete or not.

First, the mechanical properties of bamboo. According to the researchers, the modulus of elasticity of bamboo in tension is about 1/10th of steel. Which means, the bamboo reinforced structures are prone to have higher deflection, wider cracks and lower load or moment bearing capacity than the steel has.

Second, the dimensional changes of bamboo due to moisture, temperature, and load relative to concrete is different. That is bamboo swells and pushes concrete due to water absorption when curing begins. But, as it dries, it shrinks back and hence creates some void between concrete and bamboo interface. Along with this, the differential thermal expansivity and Poisson's ratio make it vulnerable to cracking of the concrete during the service life.

Third, like timber, bamboo is vulnerable to environmental degradation and insect attacks. Its durability depends on the types of species, ages, conservation condition, treatment, and so on.

The mechanical properties of bamboo are hard to generalize as steel. Though according to some research, the bonding of bamboo with concrete can be enhanced using some adhesives, like epoxy, the technique is an expensive method. Similarly, the durability of the bamboo can be enhanced by using treatment procedure, but that too depends on numbers of other aspects, like age, chemicals, etc. Though all the above-mentioned constraints are met, every aspect of construction needs a thorough inspection.

So, based on the current literature on bamboo, I don't consider bamboo to be a viable substitute for steel in concrete.

In a rather unconventional move, a yet-to-be-identified man in Ụmụdiala village, Ezinifite, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has taken a unique approach to construction by using bamboos in place of irons, to cast the decks and pillars for his two-storey building. The builder has gone against the conventional style, shunning traditional materials such as iron, in favour of bamboo in the ongoing construction.

A concerned resident of the area, Chief CKC Obiekwe, drew the attention of this reporter to the bizarre construction through a video currently trending on the social media — a testament that the first-of-its-kind bamboo-based construction in the area has gone viral online.

The video shows that while bamboos had been used in place of irons to cast pillars and lintels of the ground floor of the two-storey building, some portions of the first deck have also been cast with bamboos in place of irons, while the remaining portions of the deck and pillars for the second deck are also already constructed with bamboos, waiting to be cast with concrete.

Commentator on the viral video also revealed that this was not the first time the builder had employed such a method in the construction of his house. He is said to have previously constructed similar bamboo-reinforced buildings in Abuja and Lagos before bringing it down to his hometown.

Although sources described the builder as a wealthy man, this reporter, Izunna Okafor, could not reach him to confirm the prime motivation and reason behind the bamboo-centric construction. Some locals, however, quoted him as saying that using irons to construct house is not only expensive, but also a waste of money, given the present-day economic realities in Nigeria.

Howbeit, while some applaud the man's ingenuity and thriftiness, others express concerns about the long-term structural integrity of a bamboo-reinforced building, describing it as a death trap and a very risky adventure.

Reacting another resident of the area who pleaded anonymity said, “With this unconventional approach to construction now in the spotlight, it calls for attention from the relevant agencies to ensure that the buildings comply with the standard building codes.

“This oversight is critical to avoid any occurrence of building collapse, which could lead to another unnecessary waste of innocent lives, because the builder himself may not even be there when the building will collapse.

“The safety and structural integrity of such construction methods should be a top priority for all stakeholders in the building industry, especially given the high rate building collapse in the society today.”

That one is actually different from this. The deck is only wood, not concrete on top of wood or bamboo. The weight of concrete on top of wood or bamboo can affect the house.

Dey play! As strong as bamboo is, when in use or not, it soon becomes a shadow of itself. Me with a few students used it to construct a screen house for planting in my 400 level. After two years, it came down by wind and rain.

Now imagine for a structure that will be used for over 30 years, especially if it will be used commercially where stomping or heavy duty work will be done. It’s not advisable please

Always try to make people know the kind of materials you build your house with & how it was built so that they can decide if they wanna risk their lives staying there or not

Bamboo have higher tensile strength than iron rods?? You should be arrested for this? Your certificate if you’ve got one need to be withdrawn. The man constructing this building should be banned from building sites.

Read to Understand, not to comment. The guy is right, Bamboo has a higher Tensile Strength than Iron rods, It is actually not as risky as it seems if properly done well. Bamboos rivals steel in tensile strength. Although the right questions to be asked would be what test was carried out to check for the Structural integrity and all that especially in terms of Biodegradation etc., still, if properly treated with epoxy or strong coating system, it will last more than the usual 8 years it takes for bamboo to biodegrade. Bamboos absorbs CO2 and that’s why it’s that short. But this is avoidable technically. I hope this helps!. In all, humans aren’t great at accepting change, myself inclusive

You're not getting it. Did they floor the house with wood or concrete ??

Wood will have lighter weight than concrete hence the building will stand the test of time compare to concrete flooring that has granite, cement and sand. That mixture alone have alot of weight.

This is innovative indeed.

It will be a matter of time before we know whether the structure holds.

I think it will hold as I see the bamboos appear mature and cast close together. In the U.S for example, some decks are built with wood.

Below link corroborates the statement already made here that bamboo has a higher tensile strength than iron.

Please don't comment on issues you have far reaching knowledge about.Bamboo is very high in tensile strength than steel.
All that is required is to have a rich concrete mixture for it and the bamboo treated accordingly and you have yourself a good slab that can carry the weight of the load already calculated to be superimposed on the slab.

The person you quoted was right in some ways.....
What if I told you there are houses built with plank and bamboo in the 90s that are still standing strong till now, some are already over a hundred years.....
I have seen proof, I know what I am talking about.

The qualities of bamboo is never in doubt. Timber have been used for centuries…we know that, the tensile strength of bamboo compared to steel isn’t the only consideration in building. It’s annoying when people claim to be engineers then quote that factor as if it’s the only relevant factor during construction.

The Anambra man is constructing a two storey building exclusively with bamboo substituting reinforcement steel bars. That’s crazy. Ask yourself if those bamboos have undergone any sort of treatment prior to using them, then should bamboos or timber frames be used the way the video portrayed.

This isn’t a bungalow or wall partitioning that needs less load. He is building a two storey building with bamboo beams and columns. That’s not ingenious in my opinion. It’s madness. The Chinese and Indians wouldn’t use those bamboos the way he is using them.

This is not new.
Always educate your self with information.

This is commendable and probably good.
But I’d rather suggest this for a one storey building or bungalow.

Funny enough, the tensile strength of bamboo is more than that of steel.
Let’s just see how everything goes at the end of the day.
Bamboo actually has a greater tensile strength than steel. It is also much cheaper to use, and completely environmentally friendly.

Steel is known for its strength and durability, and is a popular construction material. However, bamboo has some advantages over steel, including being a renewable resource and being lighter in weight. Bamboo also has good insulation properties and is more environmentally friendly.

This is the beauty of social media, the frigging irony. Calling out others for ignorant insights while making even more ignorant insights. Amazing! In what world does bamboo have a greater tensile strength than steel. Steel has way better tensile strength than bamaboo even with the caveat of type and grade.

Besides you're all mentioning tensile strength as if that's the only quality that matters, what about compressive strenght and bond properties to the concrete mix? Those bamboos are smooth not rough like steel rebar, then not even talking about the size requirement of the reinforcement. This whole thing might actually work but its still experimental and shouldn't have been used yet cause i seriously doubt we've carried out enough testing to use this commercially.

Hopefully this doesn't bear similarities to the ocean gate sub where innovation was pushed too far too soon, without rigorous testing and concerns for result of those tests, with costs being the primary motivator.
