What happened to our “world's largest rice pyramids,” made with a million bags of rice, by the last Administration

What happened to the CBN anchor borrowers programme

An economist, Mr Fasan called the rice pyramids a glorification of subsistence farming.

Just like the groundnut pyramids, the nation has to start pouring resources into crops it has competitive advantage in. Nigerian rice will always be more more expensive than the imported variant. If not for the protectionist wall, Nigeria's rice production would collapse but it is artificially supported by it.

Nigeria even has its own rice variant which is actually better than the imported variant nutritionally-the Ofada and Abakaliki rice. Nigerians should be encouraged to eat it more. That is one reason why there's a rush for it.

Abakaliki rice, if all stones and debris are removed should also be well promoted and the price is actually competitive, with or without a tariff wall.

are you happy with the way the north is dominating food production in Nigeria by using their cows to come destroy every farm in the South plus the brutal killing of the southern farmers. And moreover the little rice they are able to produce is simply not enough for over 250 million Nigerians. Causing food inflation

Food production is not a North and South thing. The North is better at food production. Admitting such isn't the end of the world.

It also indicates that the South is actually more advanced.

Again, it is not a North and South thing.

The goal of Nigerian becoming self sufficient in rice production is simply bad economics but it won't go away.

Nigeria if it wanted to can produce enough rice to feed the world. The only thing stopping the country is that it lacks the competitive advantage in rice production to achieve that goal. That is why imported rice is cheaper than the locally produced one.

Nigeria should instead focus on crops it has competitive advantage in such as plantain, yams, cassava, cocoa, avocado and so on. Nigeria's productivity in these crops is poor when compared to countries like Ghana and Ivory Coast. because undue attention is given to rice

Someone is importing and you are happy of being led to a promised land when you should already be exporting. We are truly a consuming nation and never a productive one.

Wouldn’t it be better if they use the already fertile land we have to produce the rice? No. It’s cheaper to import compared to doing land preparation and the final processing of harvested rice yet the budget for importing is the same as producing the rice Nigeria, and this can be continued till we get tired of producing, but no, those in charge have more to profit from it than what is there for Nigerians hence the adoption of importing.

You are here celebrating cowardice. We are truly as good or as bad as those leading us.

What happens to the local rice farmers?
The ones govt banned foreign rice for?
The ones that produce low quality rice that's more expensive than imported rice.
Isn't this a failure of the rice ban?
You banned imported rice to make locally processed ones thrive. They failed to deliver and made rice over 60k per 50kg. Something that was 9k several years back.

There is nothing wrong in importation. It is actually good for an economy.

Nigeria imports rice principally because the country lacks competitive advantage in the production of rice. That means rice produced here will be sold higher than the international price. Because of this, government placed high tariff walls to deter importation or for be imported rice more expensive than the locally made one.

Economies flourish when they invest in things they have competitive or comparative advantage in or what I would call their calling.

Nigeria should instead focus on products like cashew nuts, shea butter, avocado and a host of others. Cambodia with a population barely a 10th of Nigeria produces 700,000 mt of cashew annually while Nigeria produces 100,000mt

Shea butter alone can bring the country as much as $2bn annually from its export. This will more than cover all the rice imported into the country.

Thank you for educating him🥰. To add to your assertion, during jonathan Obasanjo and yaradua regime, we import rice and our economy is stronger. Dollar is just 150. But buhari than ban it, see our economy now. We should never starve ourselves cos we think we can make a point
