Why not compare minimum wage too and job opportunities.

Nigeria is a jungle.

Where OP got it wrong is the comparison was what one hour minimum wage in the UK (£10) can buy .... not what £10 can buy.

On product quality... do you really believe foods in the US are of better quality than in Nigeria? Bread... bread in Nigeria is general natural... flour ... yeast and water. Bread abroad ... flour ... bromide and water. Yeast bread is wayyy more than twice the price for beautiful soft when fresh bromide bread. Butter from palm oil ... do you really think you can afford such natural butter abroad? But here you are believing margarine is better. Do you know margarine is closer to grease than butter? Try leaving some margarine and some butter outside.... see which one ants/flies/mice/cats go to and which they stay clear of ... see which breaks down or gets mildew and which remains the same ... then think about grease... then which is really not at all good for human consumption. Foods in Nigeria are mainly organic... but you'll have to pay through the nose for same abroad.

They won't want to here this, all they spend their time onnis to wail about Nigeria. In one month in UK, a deduction of 640 pounds was made on my income as tax. None of the mumus would agree to such heavy tax in Nigeria yet they want government magic for the country to become paradise. Silly!

UK & US ARE OVER-RATED NIGERIA IS STILL BETTER in terms of cost of living see a practical example why doing a price comparison: 1 pound to 1 naira today is N1,001 so are you saying with £10 x N1,001 = N10,001 you cannot buy everything in that basket and collect change in Nigeria today?

1 Sliced Bread = N800
2 Spaghetti = N1400
1 Gesha = N600
1 live chicken = N3,000
1 75cl soya Oil = N1,400
1 Midium size Butter = N600
2 Gino Tomato paste = N1,000

Total = N8,800 so your change is N1,200 that's if you exchange pound to naira at offical rate and buying at the most expensive stores or high brands. If you exchange at black market rate and buy at public market "days" you will collect as much as N6,000 after buying everything in that basket....that's about £6 left.

Did you really think this through before writing this rubbish?

The 10,000 naira you mentioned is ⅓ of one's monthly minimum wage here in Nigeria. Can that person feed himself for 2 weeks with 30,000 naira?

Let's stop being stupid glorifying rubbish. Only the truth will set us free.

It's not only about cost of living. It is also about living in a country where things works. Where the government understand their responsibilities to the people.
We don't need academic statistics. My brother who travelled to the UK 5 years ago has completed two mansions here in Nigeria.
He could not even build one house in his 15 years of working in a federal government agency in Nigeria and you are here talking about cost of living.

Bro, this is inspiring. But note that, a lot of people are also abroad that are just managing their lives. They have not done much in their home Country. Also, how come your brother is shining but you are not shining. Is he using your glory join. Lols

Do you know where the person that earns that £10 works ? We all know that Nigeria system is not working but not in term of cost of living .UK and US were also crying of high cost of goods but they know how to ease the suffering of their citizen. Netherland has enter recession due to economy problem . So we should just be praying for our country to survive .
What exactly is your point

Minimum wage in the UK is £10 per hour that's the lowest anyone can get paid anyone... Paying someone less than that is a crime

In Nigeria the minimum wage is 30k a month

We are comparing both

By the way, where are you getting this your statistic?

Average Amount spent on foods in the UK is 45pounds per week.
6.5pounds per day.

Information is powerful and it's usually for public consumption.

Give the right information please.

Is Google not our friend again...let's even follow your own data 45pound a week is about N45,000 a week that's about N180,000 per month. Do you think we spend that much on food in Nigeria I a month even in a 5-memeber family and I guess your 45pound a week is not for a 5-member family. grin

In the past 2 years UK has made over 50billion pounds from Nigerians alone to shore up it's ailing economy and to keep the economy running they make sure they are stuck in jobs their own citizens refused to do while paying heavy taxes at the end of the day....Nigeria and Nigerian economy loses

Those I'm mad at are those doctors that got subsidized medical education and ran to UK to practice....why didn't you go to study medicine in UK?....just game our system.
If you want to practice in UK.....study medicine in the UK too.....abi does it make sense to want to be treating whites but use blacks to train
Ungrateful lot
Lol your anger and frustration should be directed at your government who don't know how to keep and maintain and take care of their own health care workers which the likes of Britain is teaching them how to.
By the way, I heard from the grapevine that your federal government are thinking of ways to increase the number of admissions into medical school and train and graduate them for the western countries to poach again. This is what happens when you don't have a sound intellectual leader at the helm of affairs.

Lol you can't just analyze the amount spent on food in isolation. It'd be irrational and illogical to do that. You have to place it side by side with how much they earn! Someone who earns over #3million naira a month as in the UK would see #180k a month food as a piece of cake while someone who earns #250-300k per month like in your country Nigeria would see such #180k spending on food as outrageous. Please not everyone has that poor mentality like most Nigerians. In the US I resided, my accomodation cost per month was about $1300 which is like over #1.3million per month for accomodation alone. But I never felt this because I earned way above $8k per month. So please get your analysis right.

your analysis is wrong bro. 😑
Someone earning monthly minimum wage in UK can still afford to live and feed comfortably when compared to a Nigerian earning minimum wage monthly.

Normal working hours per week in UK is 37.5 working hours. Do the maths... multiplying 37.5 by only £10 and by 4 (weeks in a month).. that's like £1500.
If the person is living in a comfortable studio apartment and the rent is just about £525 - £600 and paying all bills (electricity, water etc..) and will be eating well! The person will still be able to save up £300 monthly

That is definitely not the case if you're earning monthly minimum wage in Nigeria.

How much is your salary?
Then divide it and tell me how much you earn an hour.
Then think of what your hourly wage can get you.

If they probably work 8-10 hours, that might be your salary in a whole month.

This your analysis is lame as well as useless. Dollar is the legal tender in USA and up till tomorrow, one can use $1 to buy something tangible, same goes for pounds in UK. But in Nigeria, even #1000 can't afford one a good breakfast.
It will be best to compare our purchasing power instead of doing conversation and all that.

Other workers are other workers. Doctors are Doctors
It costs so much to train one. Government subsidized medical education for the good of Nigerians not for the good of UK.
Dont tell me about wages... Doctors are among the best paid Nigerians.
Equipment?...not bad. (But you trained with those equipments manage it to work too)
Working conditions?...they have one of the best in the country
And like I said
It will make more sense if you want go work in the UK to train as a doctor in the UK too
Why do you think even UK citizens are not even studying medicine.....it's the cost
The UK health system is heavily reliant on medical workers from India and Nigeria.
The UK government is gaming it's two biggest former colony

So because the fee was subsidized; they should stay in a country that underpays and undervalues them?

You’re literally making no sense. Doctors are being owed salaries in all states in the nation. Several are practicing out of passion at this point because if it’s left to the payments; they’ll drop the profession.

But you feel because their education was subsidized; they should wallow in a nation that pays them once in two months and regularly look for ways to boycott salary arrears.

If you like to suffer; they don’t.

How many times are we going to tell people that food is the cheapest thing abroad. It is the way their societies being designed, the logic is , if you can comfortably feed yourself, the tendency to steal or commit crime will significantly reduce.

Aside that, cost of living in Nigeria is way cheaper than in Western countries to those who have tasted both side. Nigerians living in Nigeria can't afford to live a quality lives with their wages or salaries.

What costs exactly?! Lol. Is it fuel? It’s just as expensive.

Is it light? I can categorically tell you that you pay more here because you pay in several occasions and don’t even see it.

Is it water? You genuinely think it’s cheaper to dig a borehole than pay for water running from the government?

Or is it security? Or rent? Rent in Nigerian cities are just as expensive as any major city in the world.

So what exactly makes life cheaper? Because you can cut corners once in a while? Lol.

You do know those corners are why our society is like this? Nations that don’t cut corners have a working system to show for it.

So once again; what makes life cheaper here?

You guys don't understand economics at all. Are you earning and spending Naira there? No.

Therefore, why are you converting it to Naira. If you go to south Africa and buy those things then convert the value to Naira, you will get the same result. Go to anywhere in the world where their currencies are valuable and bigger than that of Naira you will get the same result.

Carry one dollar com buy this kain bread for here make we see how much you go collect for change.

We don't spend dollar here the same way they don't spend Naira there.

Do you know that our living standard is way smaller than one dollar in Nigeria while our cost of living is way bigger than one dollar?

Things you bought that are way lower than one dollar comparing to what you will buy with hundred on naira.

Abeg! Stop disturbing us with your beer parlour comparison.

In those 2 years, how much have Nigerians living in the UK remitted back to Nigeria and would still remit for more years to come?

You should be "madder" at Nigerian politicians who also got subsidized education at different levels, they steal public funds and run to the UK anc other Western countries to enjoy world class healthcare services and most times offered by Nigerian healthcare practitioners they frustrated ouf of Nigeria!

I support any healthcare professional who wants to japa, anybody whey no like am make im vex go write JAMB and study the related courses to show us how patriotic he or she is.

I'm posting this as a response to the topic that made Nairaland front page yesterday; "See What Someone Bought With An Hour Minimum Wage In The UK £10", the link: https://www.nairaland.com/7929193/see-what-someone-bought-hour

Your reasoning is lopsided, vague an full of ignorance.

Can't believe this nonsense made it to front page.

THE QUESTION IS.. "WHAT CAN YOU BUY WITH 1 HOUR OR EVEN A DAY WAGE IN NIGERIA?

Imagine the ignoramus converting pounds to naira.

Seun should remove the moderator that pushed this rubbish to front page.

Modified: I just did a quick check and noticed that the writer is Tinubu orchin... No wonder why he lacks common sense.

You guys focus on the money earned but not on what the money earned can purchase....the purchasing power of the money. See another analysis for you to stop Lmao grin

If our bobo londoner works for the standard 8 hours per day and earning £10 per hour and he works for 5 days a week; he would have earned = £10 x 8 hours = £80/ day x 5 days/week = £400/week x 4 weeks = £1,600 per month. With this earning bobo londoner is taking nothing home at month end and cannot afford to buy that kind of £10 food every day if he does he might be in debt see why:

Now for bobo pays average of £1,480 for house rent monthly and pays average of £140 for transportation to work. That's £1,480 + £140 = £1,600 per month ONLYgrin. If bobo londoner tries to buy his £10 food everyday as man must wak that's £10 x 30 days = £300 per month.

Therefore, bobo londoner must werk grin on Saturdays to survive that's £80 x 6 days × 4 weeks = £1,920 - £1,480 - £140 - £300 = £0.00 per month grin

So Bobo Londoner must werk grin on Sundays to have £80 at every month end grin

Workers in Nigeria do not work on Saturdays and Sundays before you start your comparison again grin

Your point exactly? Because you think you cooking but you ain’t... You don’t even know the meaning of household.
