Smh. You believe this? You think anyone can sell anything in a place like Computer Village for 3 years without paying rent? Same Lagos state where people pay to sell in traffic?

There's probably a middleman (agent or lawyer) somewhere who has been luring, deceiving, and collecting rent from the tenants.

They are here.

Based on a first hand encounter with a lawyer and human rights division of the Nigerian police, the above statement is a lie. There's nowhere in the world where landlords are mandated to give a 3 year rent-free eviction notice. Whether it's 3-6 months or 3 years, a tenant is obliged to pay for the extended perior except the landlord decides to ignore.

What I find strange in Mynd's narration is the fact that POWA or any agent refused to take rent for 4 years (since 2019) in a place like computer village. Well I may be wrong.

You don't know what you are saying and You don't even have to collect bsc in law to know something that is public knowledge,

Once an eviction notice as being served on the property the rentage automatically stops ..

tenant paying landlord after eviction must be related to santa cause

The police isn't the problem, Nigerians are the problem.

The initial quit notices were served in 2019. The tenants went to court and the court case started. The court finally ruled that POWA had the right to evict and demolish.

POWA applied for a demolition permit, it was issued and the tenants were served a 3-Month notice ending December 31st.

Then they were also served a 24-hour notice on December 30 to remind them.

As at midnight of 12am January 1, those tenants should have left as they didn't have any legal stance or any right to be there, POWA had gone through the needed steps too and so they can't be held liable.

Also note that those asking where the tenants should go, POWA has not been collecting rent since 2019 when the initial quit notices were served. They refused to make plans now this has happened.
All these grammar to justify why a landlord will sneak into his own property in the midnight to demolish his own property like a thief?

POWA market owned by police wants to demolish and reconstruct their building.

As usual, people using the place (tenants) knows that when the new market is rebuilt, they either will not get a space, or it will be far more expensive than what they can afford, so they kicked against it.

They the Tenants, took their Landlord to court in 2019 to stop the planned eviction, demolition and rebuilding of the market.

Now the Landlords have won the case in court. The court has given them the go ahead to demolish and rebuild their structure.

But as usual with Nigerians, when they are served notices, they keep believing and believing that there should be a way out. Instead of simply obeying the instruction.

A final 24 hours notice was served in addition to prior notices and demolition was effected the at the expiry of the 24 hours notice.

You may be right on this one. Someone is definitely collecting rent. But the onus is on the person paying for a place to do adequate checks. If you rent/buy a place that is subject to litigation, na once chance matter.

Meaning, if you attack an Igbo man's business for instance because of hatred and envy unfortunately he runs down

You did not only ruin him alone you also ruin others who indirectly earn a living out of his business who often are not Igbo's

So, it's like a chain banding them together indirectly, if you drag one end down to the sea the others drown along with it.

That is the usual style if you are familiar with property disputes. Some people not well informed find it difficult to believe that Tenants do oppress landlords as well. But it happens.

Some tenants can be a very big headache and they can use the complex, corrupt and long legal process in Nigeria to tie down a property for years! This is common in Lagos.

So most times in property disputes, once a judgement is received, you'll see the judgement creditor rushing to the property either to remove the roof or break it down to ensure those residing in it vacates.

Most times, such a case would have been in court for a minimum of 3 years. If you delay and they succeed in getting an appeal and maintenance of status quo, you are looking at another 3-5 years or more of not having possession of your property. And the value of the property going down the drain.

And during this period, some crooked people may even be sub-letting and collecting rent on the property to tenants that may not know the property is a subject of litigation. Once a party wins the case and decides to take immediate possession, you then see the occupiers crying foul without knowledge of what the judgement creditor has suffered.

It's possible. Taxes and levies can still be collected from those shop owners from different govt agencies even if the tenants are owing or not paying ther Landlord (POWA)

Reading through the article now, I was surprised that some if not most of the occupants are even yorubas and yet we do not hear any form of wailing from them.

If the building was left in its classical structure, they will come online and be "calling us" brown roof republic. But they want to modernize it now, they are saying some specific persons are targeted.

Last year thought me to always do my own research when reading anything pertaining to tribalism in Nigeria
