You weren't there to know if Abagworo's folk were fighting for survival or not, so what claims are you making? This is the very sort of sensational bunkum the OP is kicking against. It occurs on both sides.
I'm not making any claim . . . I simply brought his (Abagworo) comment to a logical conclusion. Sad as the event maybe, saying that they fought for "survival" means IF they, by mistake, surrender, they will be killed. But after the surrender, they were not killed which means that they were not fighting for "survival" but for something else, maybe a right for self-determination or a false self-defense.

@OP
You are right. I did not witness it but my parents did so as most NLanders' parents. We all have our different accounts of the war passed down to us. Because of this, I'll prefer ALL Nigerians to totally forget about the war. Nothing good comes out of such discussion as we all have our different "gospel truths".
I might say something that will hurt you without knowing and vis-versa. Its best, in my opinion, to avoid this topic.

Posters logic is funny. The truth is that some of us have 1st hand info on that war.My father fought as a child soldier while my Grand father fought as a full soldier. The history from my family's point of view is what I believe. Most Igbos fought that war as war of survival and not war of secession as being claimed by many reports I have come across.

Bros, it is very funny and naïve indeed.

Well, you would think people will give simple answers to a simple question? I just corrected the fellow you quoted an you did not read or understand that! If you want to read about logic, go here ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic.

You have not answered the question, so you really have nothing to offer, I guess. Or, maybe a deficit of education is the problem you are having but so far, you are trying to derail the poster without answering a simple question posed by the message. Until, you can answer that question, you have no credibility so you best respect your age before the young men who smack you on your bald head every where on NL for fun, descend on you -- just an advice.

If I inform you that I saw the war, participated and surrounded, it will not change anything about how you and poster of the thread think about Nigeria/Biafra civil war.
You sounded like you witnessed it but vowed to re-write history by bringing up conjectures every now and then.btw, you are yet to tell me why you hate awo, adekunle and obj aside fighting against biafara !

@Afam. . .that is very true! But I will tell you honestly that I am surprised at your candour regarding this topic!

I have two experiences which I have gotten away from; which anyone will pray they never experienced. One was an armed robbery attack in Kogi State while going to Abuja. Do you know that a military guy (in his uniform) was in the vehicle at that time and guess what? He opened the door while the vehicle was still in motion and jumped out! If I remember well, I think he lost his belt or so in haste. Our get-away was frantic and only what you would see in an American movie!

The second one was having a pistol pointed at my head while escorting my cousin home at night by an armed robber - who claimed he was a cop! My cousin (a lady) is all I could think about and getting her to safety was the only thought in my head through this ordeal. I know that pistol very well, it was a Browning .45 Caliber - my dad had a very similar pistol and I have played with it and many other guns as his guards played with us as kids and let us play with the guns - without ammo. So, these are some of my real life experiences - not even war or close to it! Can anyone make a claim or attack another based on stories they were told, which true as it may, is heavily biased?

You are as goofy as hell. We know the slimy trolls by what they write. At night and yet you were able to discern the pistol pointed at your head by an armed robber was Browning 1911. I can not speculate how old you were when your father’s aides allowed you to play with such a gun.

In fact, I do not know what to believe in these craps involving your father as service man and Browning 1911. I can not recall when Nigeria started issuing 1911 as side arms to soldiers. Maybe your father was a member of foreign armed forces. Again, there is no soldiers of advanced countries that would allow a kid to play around with Browning 1911.

Odenson (Dede1) ==> You must be retarde.d for your useless and valueless posts on this thread! Have you answered the question, NO and you know at your old age, you are more than a fool!? Now to your useless comments, so others can see you are a REAL dumbhead: My father towers above everyone in your lineage and seeing you can't even match the achievement of the best of your clan who you claimed was lost in battle, how dare your useless man talk about someone you don't know and can not look him in the face and none in your lineage could not look him in the face if he stood? Check: you are a big fool! Don't let me insult your elderly ones who had more honor than you useless, lazy piece of trash - sore loser!

I know you had no privilege in life so you are mad when I told you just a little thing - it makes you head explode!? My age is none of your business and except you have evidence to controvert that the event I described did not happen, then STFU! But obviously you are a fool for your forget I have a living witness to what I have described. Again, if you ever fought in any war (which is extremely doubtful from your juvenile and silly posts), you would recognize almost any gun even in darkness. If common sense does not make you realize that a gun pointed right at your head is close enough to be seen in any kind of light, then you have no use to humanity and you should just keel over now and die an inglorious, unsung and shameful death! The Browning was officially retired by the US Forces in 1985 so talking about 1911 make it seem like an old weapon and so improbable that I ever saw or touched it? I think alzheimers is already eating away your remaining brain cells. For your information, I have played with different weapons including AK-47, pistols, assault rifles, etc because guards watched the house morning, noon, overnight, in shifts in our own house, GRA, or wherever we were! So, you think they were useless efufuleles (talk less of efulefu) like you blowing hot wind and did not play with "ogas" pikin? Will someone like you even have a mouth to speak in that situation talk less of this your rabid ramblings in the anonymity of the internet?

Fela called your type "BONN" - doubt if you can figure that out without Google or asking around!

Final word: don't derail the thread. I don't care for your existence. If you didn't fight, your contributions are useless by just pretending to be something when you are not. The comments on this thread are scary. I'm so sure people personality in nairaland would be much different form their normal life personality. It has to be otherwise Nigeria would have been a warzone at the moment. You guys will probably drink beer together in real life and get along normally but not on nairaland.

Nearly my entire family witnessed the war. My grandparents had to abandon their belongings and run into the forests. They spent much of the war hiding in the forests since Nigerian bombers were targeting civilians.

Another one of my relatives marched happily to war but never came back.

Much of my family fled into Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, since much of the bombing was targeted against Igbo areas.

@OP

It is unfortunate you have such a downcast mindset about the tales of the war. Let me remind you that rarely do warriors narrate full detail accounts of battles during the war. The reason is simple because one soldier can not participate in all the battles within all the sectors at the same time. In fact only the sector commanders and personals at HQ knew as much about the war as reporters.

If anybody really wants to know the gist of the war, he or she must remain at the rears with imbedded news hunters. I can understand why your father or uncle does not want to talk about war with you because their knowledge of battles is limited to ones they participated. In fact, researchers could tell more detailed stories about war than field commanders.

Bingo, you finally get it.
Is that not what I have been telling you all this while? I have always believed that you knew this but always sought to reduce that episode to your own personal experiences when there is a wealth of knowledge out there.

Thanks to all contributors. So far, we have had 237 views and NO ONE here on NL has said, YES, I saw the WAR ACTION during the civil war. You may have your own account of what you saw, which is fine and you can contribute it. But so far, you have been told by older people who saw and books you read but NO ONE has said, YES I saw and fought in the war. With this becoming evident, perhaps, this perspective can begin to shape some of the conversation about some of Nigeria's past history for which we mostly read or were told about.

A mere glance at the above incoherent and gibberish drivel you posted will inform an onlooker you are an empty barrel that makes the most noise. There is no amount of insults from your putrid mouth that could cover idiocy. I think it takes three generations or so to forget.

In the US, they count war generation, post war generation, baby boomers (born after the war), generation X, etc.

Nothing like that in nigeria of course.

Though we have various wars going on right now with boko haram, mend, massob, opc etc.

Is it true 69 people were victims of a bomb blast today in borno, as reported by yahoo news?

Stupid thread that can only be inspired by endemic cowardice.

Someone already called the thread "funny". He was being very charitable.
At the outbreak of the war, there were teenagers who had never seen a gun before, but who went on to make excellent soldiers once they were trained and marched to the front.

There are many civilians today who are FAR MORE COURAGEOUS than soldiers with many years of war experience.
It is all in the HEART, not in the head.

Your opinion is useless here, maybe you can open yours to preach to the choir. Either you are as lazy, clueless and cowardly as your fellow tribalists (champions of NL e-wars) or you are too small to have seen any WAR action (not even university aluta) with MOPOL all over you. I did not witness the battle, but I remembered seeing soldiers coming home from the battle field with milk in their hands as they trek to their homes after being dropped off. We were touching them because we have never seen anything like that (camouflage uniform helmet, guns and all)

I also remembered the propaganda news coming from the Biafra radio broadcast telling us about their advances against the federal troops.

I also remembered boys of age hiding from being recruited to join the federal troops

Sadly we left Nigeria in 1965. I was not able to get involved even as a child, but we heard what happened to our people back in the naija delta. The injusticws meted out to my people by the ibo, the forced evacuation of our towns and cities, the rape of our women and murder of our men. When the agitation by our boys started again we felt compelled to assist them in anyway we could. My people have always had a strong head so when I went to my village and "the boys" came up to me and said "bro dis place hot o, you can't just be walking around like that", I asked threm what they were on about. The leader sharp sharp produced an AK47 and said I should never walk around without it. They took me through the operation and care of the "walking stick" as they called it.

CyberG:

A small rat like you only understand being crushed in the head. So, since you know nothing about the WAR, never even saw a kitchen knife, run along and open your own thread. Every onlooker can see you are a pretentious club-footed efuufulele using tribalism as a cover for your failures. I don't care for whatever crap sits on your table, nothing is in your old, flat and balding empty head. So, no combat experience, not even Aluta, talk less of the war, you are out of your depths dummy and this is way out of your pay grade. If you weren't a little rat, I would gladly put you to shame in real life but I ain't got your time - pretender.

You fall into the strata of Nigerians who are inherently idiotic and consistently display their mental feebleness in debates. By the way, I do not give a ratarse if you and family lived in a backwater GRA as in the case of Nigeria because the country is a glorified jungle already. As one poster had referred your nonsensical post as “Straight from the gutter”, I must add you are equally straight from gutter.

It is a complete waste of time for any human being to attempt a debate with a marooned dunce such as you who is piloted by a psychotic skull and can not outdebate an Alzheimer patient. A bloody dimwit, tribal irredentist and loudmouthed son of bit,ch  who had idiotically claimed to have developed special set of eyes able to discern a class of pistol at night. What a ninny.

I suggest you donate your drug ridden body to the authorities so that your wonderful set of eyes could be subjected to further experiments with hope to discarding night vision goggle currently used by soldiers from advanced countries, olodo.

What research are you referring to? You discount every piece of literature out there. You have never used a book or link to support your position; not even the books written by Uwechue, Afigbo, Madiebo, etc. So I am a bit curious as to what researcch you are referring to. But you expect everyone to accept your words as gospel. In any case, each to his own. cool

I have nothing against research works but frown at inaccuracies and blatant falsehood imbedded in such works especially when it is done to satisfy a certain interest. For example, Madiebo’s book you have profoundly quoted had instances of inaccuracies. The case in point was the reference he made in certain chapters referring 68 brigade of “S” Division as a battalion. Henceforth, every other write-up has referred to 68 as battalion.

Also, there was an issue that happened between Achuzie and Onwuatuegwu in Akabo, the headquarters of the 68 brigade and also served as the “S” Div’s HQ. In fact, it was OP briefing and many other field commanders were in attendance. Madiebo, in his book, painted 14th Div under Ogbugo Kalu which was headquartered in Atta good five miles behind “S” Div as the main expeditionary force delegated to recapture Owerri.

At time of the OP briefing, Nigerian vandals were in Oji and threatening to cross Umuiyi Bridge into Akabo and capturing entire Mbaise/Mbaitolu/Ikeduru axis. It was unfortunate that Major TI Atumaka commander of 68 brigade who hailed from Ubomiri, Mbaitolu LGA died during the operation to recapture Owerri.

He shall ever be remembered for the gallantry and bravery efforts he displayed while making sure 3MCDO and 16th brigade under Adekunle and Utuk respectively beat a hasty retreat from Owerri.

There was a time NL banned Biafran war threads because they can get sentimental at times and lead to re-opening old curing wounds.

A lot of lies fly around about Igbo ethnic group with regards to the war.People even personify Igbo like its the name of a single man who took personal decisions during the war.For example a poster wrote that Igbos came to their village to move them else where and take over their land. That is pure display of illiteracy.Biafran soldiers came to evacuate civilians in a war zone to a safer place and all they could think of was Ibos came to take over their land.I think it might have been a propaganda used in winning the heart of the unintelligent people.

The simple truth is that apart from the political class, the average Igbos on the street were fighting to live.People were hearing rumours that they have killed all the Delta Igbos and are about crossing the River Niger to come and finish killing those in the East. Some people in the villages volunteered to join Biafran forces in order to defend their people.

Selective killing of Igbos by Federal troops at captured mixed territories made other people believe Igbos were the problem.Igbo denial was a key to survival.
