Apart from aesthetics, high roof has no special advantage. It is even a disadvantage in case of maintenance because carpenters will find it difficult to maintain good balance when carrying out repair works on the roof.

There is a popular saying amongst carpenters: a high roof is the gateway to heaven. It insulates you against them sub saharan heats.

Kindly watch out for any new roof installation around your area, you will understand better

I dont need to. or have you watched out for any new roof installation around your area?

If it's a disadvantage to maintenance, how was the roof installed?

Lies. The higher the roof the higher the angle of elevation which reduces the impact of rain on the roof and increases durability.
On high-slope rooftops, gravity makes any moisture from water to be quickly channelled t down into gutters. The lower the slope, the longer moisture lingers on the rooftop where it degrades materials and turns weak spots into leaks

You hear this, you are convinced.
You hear another argument, you are convinced.

Installation is different from maintenance.

While installing there are places for maneuver i.e places where installer can stand conveniently, while it is not so during maintenance work.

Nothing.

Nigeria moved from round-edged houses to aluminium roofs to 2-front pillars houses to high roofs to contemporary designs. You can tell the era a house is built by design. We follow trend a lot--one person builds and architects design from memory until the style is no longer en vogue.

You will find the right answer when you find out the idea for "e didn't dey", "gerrarat here mehn", "na Dem dey rush us", "we are outside" and "no gree for anybody this year". These slogans passed through the same phase.

As far as I know it is due to our copy-copy mentality. We copied high roofs from other countries without knowing why they were popular- especially countries where it snows, unlike Nigeria.

A steeper incline will allow the snow to fall more easily of the roof.

No tangible advantage in NIGERIA, we only copied the western world without making enquiries about the roof. Just as some people have said, u don't need that high Kingpost to have a good slope for water to have easy access from d roof..
The western world make use of that high roof (kingpost) because of the winter season when they will experience heavy snow fall, for the snow to have easy fall from d roof and for easy access with any long tool to be used on d roof to drag down snows. There will be less accumulation of snow on a high roof kingpost..

If it's because of the aesthetic, we have better flat roof designs that will outshine that high roof design in terms of aesthetic..

Still having this same discussion with someone. The roofing seems to be so popular in Nigeria these days. I don't even like it. Like someone explained, the kind of heat trapped up there na dieee. Not even in this country where everywhere is very hot. Abroad, they use those kind of roofs for attics, and their weather is not as hot as ours. But as usual, Nigerians like to copy copy.

This is pure lie!

Cross ventilation is achieved in a building with good opening not from the roof.

Lol...
You must be really ignorant.
Any sane person knows that the higher a roof is away from its occupants, the greater the comfort they derive. We are talking impact of proximity as it relates to heat radiation here.

I did a course on the revolutionary Cool Ambient Technology in far away North America, exactly ten years ago.

Simple analogy, do you feel the heat of fire more when it is closer or farther from you?
Try dey reason na, and be open to learning.

To economise the quantity of wood that would be used. U use less amount of woods when built this way.

Wrong. By experience they all leak. Na format for more money by the carpenter. Nothing special

The carpemter makes less when the roofs are high like this.
The amount of wood being used are less too.

How do u mean. Height of king post not more than 1.8m as against 3.6m....and u say 3.6m eats less wood? You de whyne us??

To follow the trend simple.
Zero advantage.

You overspend on wood, overspend on all materials and installation.

Nobody should come with than rain water pooling fable, houses built donkey years back with minimal slope and slate are not pooling water till today.
As long as there's a slope water will run. So is it now that people are using aluminum that will pool.

The carpenters know they charge crazy for repair of those high roofs. Don't be deceived.

If it's so why are there still flat roofs with slight slope.

Absolute Rubbish.
Moisture on top roof for Nigeria.

That design is silly and is not in any design book .

I spoke with Ministry of Lands officials days ago about this design and was told it had no value but maybe aesthetic.

Thanks for bringing this to public discuss.

I have always had my reservations for this trend which is fast gaining popularity.

Firstly, the assertion of improvement in water run off does not hold water. A 45 degree slope is enough evacuate any amount of precipitation.

The idea may have started from people copying western designs without configuring them to our climate.
The high roof creates space for the attic which "oyibo" people also use as living spaces. But in our clime, you would fry to death because of the heat up there.

Some have adduced that it makes the house cooler. This is another misconception because simple physics should tell them that the larger surface area of roofing tiles or aluminium exposed to the sun increases the convection of heat into the living spaces.

More worrisome is the addition of cornices or parapet which prevents the roof from breathing thereby trapping tremendous heat in the attic and by extension the living spaces below.

Visiting old institutions built during the colonial era, you will marvel at how passive those design were and are liveable even without artificial cooling e.g UI main library, UCH main structures, ABH.

In a nut shell, increasing floor to ceiling height with clerestory Windows is more tropical oriented than the miss-fit we are discussing.

Didn't read all the comments .... and I'm not into architecture. I believe the high roof has nothing to do with rain .... but about making a larger roof area to install solar panels. These are sensible forward thinking people and not the follow follow type who in hot hot Nigeria be copying Europe cold climate house designs. Then they be broiling in their homes if they don't have commercial fans or can afford to run a/c 24/7. High roof also makes the house cooler. Hot air rises and will be wayy up leaving the cooler air at the bottom where people will be comfortable. The house becomes even cooler if a few windows are way up to allow the hot air to escape and cooler air sacked in through the lower windows. Such a house never needs a fan. We need to be building houses to suit our climate .... houses to allow heat to escape ... not to trap heat. We can see tht clearly in the US. houses in New York are not the same as those in Texas or Florida... NY houses are designed to trap heat .... Florida/Texas houses are designed to release heat. Even if they do .... they can afford to run a/c 24/7 .... can we?

Snacks... feel free .

Give answer to relate to the tropics. This is done to make snow roll down easily, yes, but we're doing it here.

When they cover it with roofing sheets, you'd like the scenery. Nothing go fit shake that roof and the water run off will be seamless. The only downside is it will require more materials than normal. When they cover it with roofing sheets, you'd like the scenery.
