There's a difference between growing and having the right conditions for the crop. It's like growing apples in the tropical regions, even if you grow them, you can't have the natural comparative advantage.

China will rather grow crops that they have the comparative advantage or invest in countries with the advantage they do not have naturally. If it is easy to grow cocoa, with the cravings and obsession of US and Europe with cocoa products, they would have done so since long time ago.

Ironically, it is more expensive than Irish potatoes per kg

Yam is native to Africa, Asia and some parts of the Americas (mostly the south). The name generally refers to a wide range of species, so each of these regions have thier own types. For some reasons, the Ghanaian yellow yam are more easily found in Africa supermarkets abroad.
