He is saying the right thing, cost of duty will keep the goods more costly to end users , when people speak out the government should get it as loan ,hence the government has no clue on how to go about the fraudulent mandate them are into, I mean Tinubu was inside it, not that he supports fraud but a beneficiary of the fraudulent mandate.

But business man can not lose. He will just add twice what ever charge they paid to custom on the price of the goods.

That's so true. The only loss he might incur would be drop in sales or demand, that's if the goods aren't necessities. Generating revenue via import duties is not a bad thing in itself if only the entire GR really goes into govt coffers & not embezzled, which we all know isn't the case.

He is talking nonsense. When he imports does he set the price he sells all the things he imports in his supermarkets based on N1000 to dollar or the current rate? So as an importer who imports things that can be manufactured in Nigeria, he wants to pocket the difference because he won’t pass on the savings to you.

Obi and his ilk are the very people who have destroyed this country via rent seeking. Firstly they will import using official rate, they will pay duty based on official rate and they will charge the public prices based on the parallel rate and pocket the difference. All that money should have gone to the government to provide social services, schools roads etc.

When we tell you the likes of Obi that ruined this country, this is how they do it.

Government is now saying no more!!! You will buy forex at the market rate and pay duty at the market rate. If people cannot afford your imported products then make them here or find something else doing. We are not subsidizing imports and overseas jobs anymore.

Exchange rate hit ₦1,605/$ today .
I did IMPORT DUTY EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE at 351/$ 2 years ago.
That IDEC is practically useless today.
This galloping exchange rate for import has to stop. It is not sustainable.

How does Nigeria Customs determine the actual cost of the goods being cleared?

If anything it shows Obi hasnt got a clue and . You pay duty at the exchange rate on the day you pay the duty, thats the practice all over the world.

he is effectively asking for subsidy for importers.

If between the time you buy your forex and the day to pay duty the rate changes thats your own business Risk Mr importer of toothpicks.

You either did not read or did not understand.

He said it is fuelling inflation by making duty cost less predictable

It could make the country's port less competitive as importers will use ports of neighboring countries. Nigeria is already familiar with this scenario.

Which of these points do you miss?

Peter Obi is amazing for someone who imports and who used to run a port. shocked The duty rate has NOT changed. They are charged as a proportion of the value of goods. When the exchange rate changes, the naira value of imports changes. There is NO increase in the tariff!

Haba! Is this the guy that wants to rule Nigeria or was it his media manager that wrote out his tweet?

The govt in all manners is trying to discourage importation that has killed our naira, here Peter obi is asking for subsidy on his sabmiller hero beer imported materials so he can continue to wreck damage to people's kidney.

At least AI is there to assist you now

Man GTFOH you don't know what you are talking about. Discourage importation but allocating billions to import brand new cars for senators and house of reps doesn't count in your book. Your dead-walking President is clueless, Stop floating the Naira and peg the currency at what it was in June. Nigeria customs was not created to generate revenue streams so why pegging dollar rates on goods coming into that country

Inflation of what? ……Imported products? Even so all na lie. I repost my earlier post below. Having paid duty @N1000 will he calculate his prices to you based on N1000 he paid or the parallel market rate? No! He will charge you as if he paid the parallel market rate. So basically he is asking for a subsidy on imports…..who does that? Which country that wants to develop itself does that? Which citizen that. Wants the best of his country encourages that?

How can an economy be stable or grow with all these level of inconsistencies in policies

Assess the options you have, follow a path through and see what happens at the end
