I wish it were that simple.

This policy will backfire and just cause a lot of trouble for both landlord and tenants

This is my fear

Except the rule applies to only salary earners with government or well established private companies whereby it will be automatically deducted and paid into the account of landlord directly

Government just want to tax house rent. It's all about revenue generation. They are not happy that your landlord collects rent tax free from citizens

That's the whole idea behind this monthly rent push. Tax the poor!
Wicked people

Cotonou shares border with Lagos and when you want to rent an apartment, the landlord collects security deposit plus one month's rent. When you are leaving the apartment, you collect your security deposit as long as you have not damaged anything. The arrangement works fine there. However, if you as a tenant wanted to pay for 6 months in advance so that you don't spend the money, the landlord would willing collect your money.

A yearly tenant is entitled to 6 months notice to quit.

A monthly tenant is entitled to 1 month notice to quit.
Very wrong analysis. If a monthly lent bill is entitled to 1 month notice to quit then a yearly lent bill should also be entitled to 12 months notice to quit.

Many heads will be broken out of frustration and violence. Lots of altercations and fist exchange between landlord and tenants. Sanwoolu needs to receive sense. He should provide housing for the homeless if he truly cares. This will cause more chaos. Trust me, I would rather leave my house empty than rent it out on a monthly basis.

Notice to quit doesn't mean you won't pay rent. Don't get it twisted.

You mean violence not eviction. Clashes between landlords and tenants go plenty.

These idiots take things from the West and enforce them on Nigerians. This won’t work.
People in the west make more $$$. People in the West actually get paid on time and depending on your bank, a few days early.

Getting people to pay our monthly 70k SC is a fight every month, so imagine the full rent. Most of the 9 tenants pay the SC after the 15th of every month or not at all.
This Administration is even more lost than the last. I didn’t think that was possible.

She said, “We all see what is being done in other climes, rents are collected monthly. Hence, we are looking and hoping that before the end of the year, or by early next year, we will be able to implement the policy of monthly rental.

Very stupid idiot..
Is it about copying what is done in other climes..

I like how selective they are when it comes to copying from “other climes”. Can’t they also copy better ideas that will add value to the society?

They should be talking about looking into the activities of Lagos house agents and their outrageous charges and not monthly rent.
Re: Lagos Vows To Enforce Monthly Rental Policy by IbeOkehie: 7:31pm On Mar 04
Everyone interested should mark it here - if this is ACTUALLY ENFORCED, the outcomes will be TERRIBLE.

I remember when this law was passed, I was wondering if it would be enforced. If this law is enforced, then today, Mon Mar 4 2024, will have as much economic significance as Jan 01, 2012 when Nigerians insisted on maintaining the ruinous fuel subsidy. No, nobody will see or feel anything right now, but 10 years down the road, there will be material consequences. What will happen I don't know, but it will be very, very bad.

Markets are markets. They cannot be defeated. Socialism is destructive, it helps no one.

Things like this are what make Nigeria so interesting to me. Self destruction observed in real time.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Loool

With Nigerian tenants that can be very dubious and looking for ways to cheat the landlord and live in a house rent free.

The once a year dragging of some tenants is not enough you want landlords to be asking for rent monthly?

I kuku trust Lagos landlords they will simply increase the monthly rate.
