manny4life: A title can be written by anyone. Nigerian journalism has gone to the dogs. It is part of the states duty to look after the welfare of her traditional ruler, isn't it? This is the law bruv. |

In simple terms, Nigerians need to decide if we still want to have traditional rulers or not, but until then: 1) Traditional rulers are seen as the "natural rulers" of their domain. 2) Their lands where taken over by the colonialists via treaties in which the British promised to take care of the welfare of the traditional rulers. 3) The Government of Nigeria inherited these treaties and lands from the Colonial Government. 3) The government takes care of the welfare of these monarchs by providing them with cars, stipends, police orderlies, etc. 4) The monarchs are expected to explain government policy (eg immunisation, etc) to the people, maintain peace in their community, etc. Now, I do not like the situation painted above, but that's the way it is. |

What can we say to these things |
Re: Lagos Monarchs Get N46m Car Gift From Fashola by naptu2: 7:26pm On Dec 08, 2011 |
This things are not new. I remember that state governments bought cars for traditional rulers during the Babangida administration in the 1980s. The Obasanjo administration got the late Sultan Macido to explain government policy on girl child education to northerners (probably his last public function before his death). The government got Emirs to explain its policy on immunization (during the polio immunization crisis of the 2000s). Recently, Theodore Orji threatened to dethrone any traditional ruler who allows kidnapping to occur in his domain. This has always been the relationship between traditional rulers and government. Read the article below. Plateau Gov't Buys Cars for Royal Fathers 29 September 2002 Lagos — Plateau State government has spent N51 million on the purchase of cars for traditional rulers and renovation of two palaces in the state, a top official has said. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Ali Wuyep, said in Jos while briefing newsmen on activities of the ministry that the N17 million was spent on the purchase of 22 custom-made Mercedes Benz cars for the royal fathers in the state. allafrica.com/stories/200209300413.html |

Fashola's responsibility to give 46 million naira gifts I wonder which Lagos Law stipulates this anyways? Does anyone have access to an actual copy of this law/constitution that stipulates that the state governor can purchase cars for free(not recorded as part of any stipend agreement) for traditional rulers in the state? This I would like to see. I mean so it does not continue to appear as if we are arguing from our arses. |

naptu2: So, that States did it right when Babangida was President and Then Plateau state did it in 2002, It is OK for All States, including Lagos to then do the same? Are we serious that we even want to get rid of Corruption and shenanigans at all? I don't get it. Someone tried offering up the same bullcrap for an excuse on a thread that had to do with another governor, on a similar issue, and some of those on this thread praising this governor for this, immediately tore him to shreds for even attempting to rationalize the unacceptable in that manner. Why are you attempting to do that here and why are the same dogs not tearing into you for the very same |

@Commissioner Kuye “You are therefore expected to use your influence and education to sell government policies and programmes to your people and encourage them to cooperate with government, and thereby support its policies,” he said. So, the reason for the "gift" has been explained, along wit the gift itself! Does anyone remember when Late MKO Abiola was detained in Prison and the Ooni of Ife (who was supposed to be the Paramount Yoruba Oba and a defender of Yoruba interest) was invited to Aso Rock? Only for him to come out and to everyone's consternation, the Ooni said: "The Man (Abacha) was making Sense"! A few people said the Ooni got a lot of Ghana-must-go "gifts", to sound like that! Again, when our late President was in the throes of death (Or probably dead a long time before then; RIP), some "traditional rulers and religious leaders" where invited to "see him in action", they came out and said "The president was actually very well and was just doing basic exercise like push-ups, somersaults , running 100M-dash, e.t.c, just to get his muscles back in shape, to run Nigeria better! But "The Man Died"! Thus, we can sum-up that these traditional rulers have not only lost respect, they have become clowns, tools in the hands of "every" government in power and a disgrace to the traditional stools they sit on! Most of them have become "beggers-to-government" instead of fulfilling their traditional role of custodians of our traditions! How can such an Oba fulfil his traditional role of "correcting or speaking truth to power"? No wonder a Governor can just remove an Oba, anytime he likes! Where is the "traditional, spiritual selection process" that our forefathers use in selecting who occupies the esteemed traditional stool, in those days? What we have now are "cash-and-carry" Obas thus, their words holds nothing to the average Nigerian. It might interest you that the govt has also copped-up to the strategy and uses money/gifts as inducement to these "men-of-the-belly", to make them "parrot" any unpopular policy they want to implement, hence the "instruction" of "a Commissioner" to "an Oba"! (Lord have mercy!) Whether the people (subjects) still listen to these Obas or see them as a "modern-day joke and "Area-Boyz", is out there for everyone to discern! Lastpage BTW: Whenever you introduce "ethnicity" into a serious issue like this, you make it sound trivial and it deflects away from the real bone of contention. What is wrong, is wrong; irrespective of who the perpetrator is, Period. 1 Like |

you shouldn't underestimate these traditional rulers, if it were you, you'll do more, you need to understand that they have more grounds in their respective towns or cities, residents usually respects them alot even more than the government in some cases. so if you want to reach the residents effectively, you might need to keep their respective rulers close. im not saying, they should get juices squeezed outta the masses but at least, try and make them feel important, they dont buy them these cars always, do they? |

its good to see our Rulers getting their due. however i must admit that it is nothing compared to what other countries give their rulers. to be honest, i wouldnt mind if our government even gave our Obas private jets, skyscrapers, Ferrari cars, cash benifits, etc, but they must do some work for the people to deserve it too. |
Re: Lagos Monarchs Get N46m Car Gift From Fashola by lastpage: 2:16pm On Dec 09, 2011 |
We seem to be mixing-up issues here: If you give someone (an Oba, a public Officer or anyone for that matter, "a Gift" in respect of "observable good deed(s) done in THE PAST, it is called APPRECIATION,.,.,.,.,and this is laudable BUT When you give "a Gift" in respect of a FUTURE PERFORMANCE of some Ignoble act or when such Gift is given so as to sway the opinion or incite some performance (especially when the commissioner then openly reads the riot act (expectations of those in Power) to our supposedly "revered" traditional rulers, IT IS CALLED BRIBE!.,.,.,.,.,.and that is denigrating our 'traditional institutions'. Imagine if Bode George first gave =N=50Million to that Pastor who preached at his "Thanks Giving Service" and then instructed the Pastor concerning "what to say"? How does that feel? Okay, l am not surprised that some would support this action of the Government (and it seems it has become a pattern), it is common knowledge that most Nigerians are going through a period of moral decadence in our national and individual family life. Unheard things, abominations, e.t.c., have now become "acceptable norms" Lastpage. @Aloy/Emeka: 500% Gbam except the part that says "our late president". Abacha was our late dictator and not president. The phrase you quoted, was referring to our late President, Umar Musa Yar Adua. Recall that he was in Saudi Arabia (alive, dead or dying), when our shameless "spiritual and traditional fathers" came to tell us on NTA, that "they saw him at Aso Rock" and he was so "improving" that he was doing "Olympic level exercise"! |

aloy/emeka: The British Parliament funds the British monarchy from the taxpayers' coffers. Since the British parliament represents the British people, the British people are in effect assenting to an arrangement to fund the Royal Household. It’s a little bit of reading, but somewhere in the link below, it explains how the British monarchy is funded and how much of the royal household's expenses come from the taxpayers. http://www.royal.gov.uk/TheRoyalHousehold/Royalfinances/Overview.aspx |

ekt_bear: I would not abolish the traditional rulers in African, which may come as a surprise to you. The Obas and Emirs (sorry, but I don’t know what the Igbo monarchy is called) are your links to the past and abolishing them will be pissing on your history and tradition. But to have 46 of them in a small city like Lagos is ridiculous and a waste of tax-payer’s money. However, innovative thinking and approaches can make the monarchy fiscally self-funding. _______________________________________________________________________ Diversion for ekt_bear: I saw your post in the other thread.
