WOW . . . shocked

SMH . . . Anywho . . .

baby-boy:

ARE SERIOUS!!!!! that would never cover the cost of the depot, track and signalling let alone power system or an independent power station,

I don't believe that is the total estimated cost for the project. I have seen other sources put the number at about $1.2 Billion for just particular one line of the rail project.

The first two lines of the urban rail project are estimated to cost $1.4bn. The Red line will be 30km long, and will run between Marina and Agbado. The Blue line will be 27km long, connecting Okokomaiko to Marina.

The Blue line will cost $1.2bn and will be funded entirely by the Lagos State Government (LSG). The 30km-long Red line will use the existing Nigeria Railway Corporation corridor. The Lagos State Government is currently in negotiations with investors that have shown interest in constructing and running the project for a concessionary period.

Just as the new Toronto Rocket trains start rolling in the subway tunnels, the TTC’s old cars are about to start moving right out of the city.

A company called Eko Rail has a deal to buy 255 H5 and H6 cars from the TTC to furnish a 27-kilometre surface rail line in Lagos, Nigeria.

The TTC cars are being gradually retired as the new Rockets come online.

The price for the cars is still under negotiation, according to TTC spokesman Brad Ross.

The first of the H5s is supposed to be trucked out of the Wilson yard to the U.S. next week where it will undergo an engineering evaluation.

The interiors of the cars will be refurbished and they will be converted to run on international track gauge, said London, England-based Michael Schabas, who is working with Eko Rail, the company expected to operate the Lagos line.

The Toronto-born Schabas toured the TTC with Lagos state governor Babatunde Fashola in May.

The H5s have been around since 1977 and 1980. The H6s date to 1986 and 1990. They were built by the Urban Transportation Development Corp., in Thunder Bay, which later became part of Bombardier.

The H4 cars, which are not air conditioned, are not being sold. They will be scrapped, said Ross.

It is not unusual for subway cars to be recycled. Seoul and Beijing cars have both had second lives in other cities.

The TTC announced in 2009 that there was an interested buyer for the H5 and H6 cars but it did not disclose where the subways might be heading.

Lagos has a population of about 15 million people and is expected to grow to about 25 million in the next decade. The new Blue line metro is expected to be running in about three years, said Schabas.

Its not bad if fashola buys an already used train from canada, but its bad if the Canadian writers make jest of the whole thing.

What is worth doing is worth doing well.
Besides, Fashola should tell us how much
each scrap train cars costs.

Correct, but that doesn't mean you should aim to ride a limousine everywhere when all you can afford is an okada.

In both cases, you would still need to ensure you are getting value for money - but the fact remains that you should "cut your coat according to your cloth" - not according to your size or whatever size you think you deserve.

So if Eko Rail decides to expand their venture into the aviation sector, would you support the idea of acquiring a 30 years old reconditioned plane?

They are some industries you don't CUT CORNERS!!!

Where is the evidence that corners have been cut? Is the NY subway or the London Underground cutting corners simply by continuing to use 30 year old cars as part of their services?

Note that I said you need to make sure to get value for the money - that means you can't buy junk that is neither safe nor capable of delivering services.

Well the London underground is over 100 years, The Jubilee Line is the last line that was commissioned in the 70's and they use a 1996 stock. The Victoria line has been upgraded to 2009 stock, All their stocks where bought brand new no matter how far back they where, they didnt go for scrap or reconditioned trains and they are well maintained, actually a separate body or company maintains the fleets or rolling stock, yes the Bakeloo line still uses the 1972 fleet but they were well maintained, the Victoria line used to have the 1967 stock before they were upgraded 2 years ago.

when they completed the East London line or should I say changed it over from underground to overground, they didn't seek for used stock but a new state of the art carriages, am sorry but no one here has put up a valid business case for Eko Rail buying a 30 years old stock!

Our Maintenance culture is extremely poor in Nigeria,
Re: Gov. Fashola Made A Laughing Stock Of Lagos In Canada by debosky(m): 5:41pm On Dec 30, 2011
^^

Thanks for the history lesson on the London Underground - the point is, the trains are still being used, safely and efficiently. You have not provided any evidence that the Eko Rail trains cannot be run safely and efficiently. It seems concern a philosophical one about starting off new, not about the CURRENT safety of the vehicles.

That LU could afford to buy new trains does not mean Lagos can afford to - I am not saying Lagos can/can't afford new trains, but the business/economic environment have to be clearly understood before making comparisons.

It is premature to pass judgement on the Eko Rail trains till we see what comes out of the refurbishment exercise.

No one has put forth a valid business case for buying old stock, neither has anyone put forth a valid business case for buying new stock. Simply because others buy new is not sufficient justification for Lagos to buy new. The lifecycle costs and the available resources must be factored into any decision to buy

If your concern is about our maintenance culture being poor, will that not impact both new and old trains?

what we need in nigeria is an ice train with magnetic levitation. the hold ups and go slow in our roads is something else.
Re: Gov. Fashola Made A Laughing Stock Of Lagos In Canada by KiKatanga: 9:16am On Sep 03, 2012
What we need in Nigeria is some engineering students. Get them to make a railway, however dangerous and however clumsy, then let them understand how to fix it and to maintain it.

Nigeria keeps importing technology and the skills to look after it, however because it's not ours. We cut corners that shouldn't be cut and know what we should do, but never why.

What we need is to have something that the designers, builders and maintainers all develop, use and look after so that the skills are taught as concepts rather than tasks and can be built upon without paying some usurious rate to patent holders.

Without innovation, Nigeria will have nothing to offer.

In 2012, over a hundred years since railways were invented you want us to start from scratch? I wonder whether you 'innovated' the technology of the laptop or the internet you used to post this dream world comment. Maybe you re-invented the wheel last week as well. grin

Intelligent countries take technology from others and make necessary modifications that best suit their local environment - that is what we need, not wholesale re-invention of technology where we don't hold any competitive advantage.
