Am I correct to say you are all encouraging to build a welfare state? You should be ashamed. Your government is only acting upon the need to prevent your economy from collapsing. Now one would think Nigerians would commend their government for this but not. What a bunch of cry babies!!

What sort of people are you? Wait, you want the government to continue to take care of you?

As big and populous as your country, it is a simple mathematics that your economy can't continue to sustain such a subsidy. It's the real world folks, you have to man up and suck it up. Socialism socialism socialism!!!

Now I would wish the President will not give in to the demands of these thugs. They must be dealt with accordingly.

Unstable Nigerian economy means unstable region and as a Ghanaian, this will directly affect me. More of your people will migrate here which means more responsibilities on our side.

The rest of the civilized world stand with you, Mr President. Don't give in to the thugs.

I dont believe this struggle is about subsidy, it's actually about wastage, corruption and the lack of gut to fight corruption. According to David Tam-West, subsidy itself doesn't exist and if it does, government clearly know those cabals that are getting it. The problem here i that FG lacks the gut to prosecute these cabals because they are the same people that donate billions to their campaign during election.
Additionally, I'm aware the 2011 budget life had been extended till March 31, 2012 meaning subsidy provision for 2011 was meant to take care of subsidy till March, Why removing it when you still have about 3 months left of the current budget?

Nigerians are even ready to accept subsidy removal if at all it exists but the problem is how are we 100% sure the revenue accrued from same will be used for what they promised to used it for. We have not seen benefits of the past deregulations and yet you want me to accept new one. You want me to tighten my belt yet you are not ready to lead by example with N1.54milliom naira daily budget for feeding & refreshment at Aso Rock (Haba Jesus & Mohammed dey come to dinner). N45,000 daily on news paper? Hahahaha

So the stance is not just on subsidy removal but to fight corruption. Fight corruption and every other things will fall in place but Jonathan can't fight corruption because his hands are covered in blood wit dubious characters he appointed into his cabinet some of whom has oil blocs and shares/interest in oil & gas biz
Re: Femi Falana & Funmi Iyanda On Fuel Subsidy Removal - Channels TV by Gbawe: 2:34pm On Jan 11, 2012
Falana highlights the persistent waste in Government policy and practices i.e current budget consisting of 72% recurrent expenditure. He touts "truly" independent EFCC and ICPC. Central bank activities must be revised. Why is the CBN acting as "bureau de change"? We need the central bank to focus on "developmental" activities vis-a-vis our current situation.

Femi Falana is a better economist than Okonjo Iweala, who would have believed it. He advocates deregulating EFCC and the CBN, he raises a good point on the CBN changing dollars to naira and then selling dollars all over again, do we have economists in the house who can take us through this (Boyo has also mentioned something like this).

Falana negates Mr. Enwegbara's argument by stating his comparison of Nigeria to China is facetious for several socio-economic reasons. falana states that Government ostensibly has funds to bail out failed banks yet will "collapse" when protecting ordinary Nigerians is the agenda of the day.

Trillion, STRIKE per Day 320 Billion

Imagine we could have just 10 ministers with passion and facts like this femi falana guy. ( I heard he's spitting facts and figures). I dont understand why we need so many ministers and ministers of state, then directors and permanent secretaries all in the same parastatal. And they say there is no money! God help naija!

You know one thing with internet is that you can even stay in a remotest village in the world and claim to be in Hawaii just to make a point.

I would like you to define the sentence "government taking care of me" As far as I'm concerned, when I produce my own drinking water, take care of electricity supply for my house and business, provide and rely on personal security, to mention but a few, wetin my government come dey do to claim he's taking care of me. and govt is not meant for taking care of the citizens, then tell me what he's meant to do?

Ghana only recently discovered oil but not in commercial quantity like Nigeria for more than 50 years and had provided some of the above-mentioned for majority of Ghanians, let Naija govt do at least stable electricity  before talking of deregulation

The most informative debate on this fuel subsidy issue.  I was for the fuel subsidy before but now I know they have already divided the money, I am completely against it.

Government can not be trusted.  So the state governments want the money to pay minimum wage, if that is the case let them keep the minimum wage.

My questions are this:

1. As against the proposed removal on 1st of April, why did GEJ and his team break the dialogue table by announcing subsidy removal on Jan 1st when discussions were still ongoing? GEJ,needs to answer because now you can see what it has resulted to.

2. 2011 budget is still in force until the end of march 2012. Can you tell me where the excess funds being made now is going. Mind you, most of the fuel being sold now were fuel that were brought in under the subsidy regime, in other words, subsidy fund have been appropriated for this fuel we are buying now and yet the price have been jacked up to 138/141 per litre. This is fraudulent and total breach of trust on the part of the government.

3. Can the govt come on air and tell us how a subsidy figure of 240 billion was jacked up to almost 1.3 trillion. What are the components of this figure. Because according to Femi Falana pointed out with facts and figure from documents issued by NNPC regarding the sharp increase in the figure, there are 2010 and 2009 areas of up 18 billion and 250 billion respectively. Then you have various components which the NNPC has admitted were irregular in the component, why can't this fraud be addressed.?

4. Based on the point in 3. we call all see that the 1.3 billion being brandished by our govt officials are just to cajole us into believing that lots of money will be saved and will be used to better the lives of Nigerians, it is total lie. What actually should be shared is 240 billion or so.

Based on this points, we can see that if corruption in the downstream sector is properly tackled, our dear government can comfortable sustain subsidy until the Petroleum industry bill PIB is passed which stipulates the proper and legitimate way to go about removing subsidy.

I am not a govt official and I am not in any labour coalition, I am just a Nigerian who cares about the ways things should be done down here. This is our country and we must demand that things be done properly and accountably too.

Let us remind ourselves the reason for this
showdown. It is not about subsidy, I keep repeating
this fact. It is about the following indices that make
our govenrment big, wasteful and ineffective: Big and overblown governments at all levels
70 Ministers
Over twenty Special advisers (on what?)
Every minister is entitled to 4 Special Assistants
Senate President earns 88 Million Naira monthly
His Deputy Earns 55 Million Naira monthly Senators take home 14 Million naira monthly
It takes 1.4 Billion naira to mantain the NASS annually
(Rememeber what Sanusi said about 25% of our GDP
is used to feed people who only sit Tuesday -
Thursday)
Our Governors exhibit such level of opulence shunned by the richest nations in the world
Our 2012 budget has a deficit component to it. We
are supposed to borrow about 1.6 TRILLION NAIRA.
NASS will be paid from that!
Aso Rock will use 1 Billion of it to eat!
Aso Rock will use another 1 Billion to fuel generators. The Vice President will use 58 Million Naira to buy
newspapers
The office of Patience Jonathan will use 500 Million to
speak bad english to you.
We will spend close to 500 Billion on International
Travels In 2012, some state governors will collect 100million as
security votes MONTHLY
They will continue to enjoy immunity clause!
Your hospitals will have no drugs
Your schools will still have no quality to train a world
class scholar Your roads will still be death traps
You will still be a local government unto yourself,
providing water, security, power and social security!
You will still pay more for petroleum products.
You will pay toll in 2012 on federal interstate roads.
If you will like this to continue in 2012, then stay at home and enjoy power as provided by PHCN!
