This is what happens when you rely on stats instead of your own two eyes.

Rio Ferdinand is stood right next to James Chester in the box but failed to mark him during a corner....You think that would appear as a defensive error in the stats? grin

why won't it appear as a defensive error or an error leading to a goal? you are a media-sheep. somebody must be blamed for any goal conceded - nothing to do with the brilliance of the other team, the team conceding must be very poor to have conceded.

Herrera suffers fractured rib

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera sustained a fractured rib during the match against West Ham United on Saturday.

The Spaniard was substituted in the 74th minute and the club will continue to monitor his progress over the next few weeks.

Since arriving this summer, the 25-year-old has scored two goals in four appearances for Louis van Gaal's side.

United's final fixture before another international break is against Everton on Sunday at Old Trafford.

How long can this kind of injury last?
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by coogar: 4:21pm On Sep 30, 2014
that's another 3-6 weeks for herrera.

this lad was rarely injured at athletic bilbao & yet he's been out twice now at old trafford in less than 2 months.

perhaps it's the exertion of compensating for rooney's red card that caused this rubbish.

any of anderson/fletcher/carrick/fellaini will come in and do the job but we will miss herrera. he's the mobile carrick - gritty defensively, tenacious offensively.

Maybe till November. The only goodnews is the two-week int'l break which will make him miss less games.

Don't know if Carrick is fit and Ando's state.

time for anderson to step up. he's the most mobile among the replacements. carrick is the best passer though but his lack of movement is a worry.....besides, carrick is a slow starter.

Yeah, Ando's problem is indiscipline. LvG is likely to feature Fletcher and Blind.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 4:48pm On Sep 30, 2014
* Herrera despite being a midfielder has the highest tackle per match for Man United. Non of our midfielders even comes close to that. Anderson has the worst record
* He has the best record among midfielders in terms of number of clearances.
* Interms of interception, only Fellani is slightly ahead.
* Herrea has won 50% of his aerial duels. Only Fellaini beats him.

I don't even need to mention his offensive stats. No one gets close to him.

After looking at stats, I want to say Anderson should not even be considered. He has a long way to go.

Not to mention our only MF that scores. When last has any of our midfielders scored?
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 4:55pm On Sep 30, 2014
A simple solution. Play Januzaj there. He will at least add some creativity. He will complement the forward players well. Then we get Rafael to seat back a little.

That will expose our midfield that is open already. Januzaj is not disciplined for the midfield.

Carrick, if he's fit, Fletcher/Fellaini

Then he plays. But he will slow things down a little. Wished it was he who played against West Ham and Herrera was okay to play Everton and Chelsea.

With Herrera out it looks like the midfield is outta shape!

Is Fellaini that would declare himself fit or the physio?

I just wonder what our MF will look like without Herrera, playing mata will need to have us have strong players that can cover behind him, and we really don't have that.

The way LvG is going, he will play Falcao and Rvp, that leaves atleast four places in the middle, Di Maria takes the left, Valencia on the right in front of Rafael, blind in the middle with who? That's where I see a problem. Truly Anderson should have been the best bet there but I really don't know his state of mind and shape.

Fellaini, Fletcher, Carrick, Mata, Janujaz will all somewhat weaking that middle.

If na Moyes, Jones don enter midfield be that. Any suggestions?

If van Gaal wants to maintain the diamond, then Anderson should take Herrera while Mata slides in for Rooney!
Anderson has same movement & robustness of Herrera, it depends on how his day in office turns out.
Sincerely, sometimes I'm not sure what I should do if Anderson is presented before me; pity him or just swing a bat @ him! here is a guy who continuously schooled Fabregas in the ways of a true midfield prospect wherever the came up against each other

mtchew smh

Na Lie!!!!

Mangala scored and own goal AND conceded a penalty against Hull

If those are not listed as defensive errors, then wahala dey.

Coogar can you cross-reference Dahdemola's stats against yours?

scoring an own goal isn't necessary a defensive error. a cross was made & mangala tried to clear the ball & the ball deflected into the net.

defensive error = a mistake made to give an opponent a big chance to take a shot on target. in mangala's case, he didn't give the opponent the possession to take a shot on target.

you gotta look at these things in perspective.

I actually love the look of Perreira against MK Dons.
He's better fit for the midfield and the only one fit to deputise for Herrera because he offers mobility, energy and creativity than the likes of Fletcher, Fellaini, Carrick.
Jones is no option. The only job he is capable of doing in midfield is acting as the 5th defender infront of defence and Blind is doing a better job of it.
As for Anderson, he shouldn't be allowed near the team!

Stats are for people who can think

WHoever brought stats to NL without educating people on how to use it is the one I blame

It must be an offensive error.

You mean Mangala can score a hattrick of own goals, and they won't register as defensive errors?

How can you then use a lack of defensive errors to defend(pun intended) Ferdinand?
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 7:41pm On Sep 30, 2014
I like Perreira very much but i think things are not stable enough to introduce yet another teenager into the set up.
With Herrera out i believe the next options should be Valencia,Fletcher and Perreira in that order. I want a right footed player on the right side of that diamond that is why i rule out Anderson for that particular position.

it depends on the circumstance. mangala was never in control of the ball when he scored an own goal. he didn't commit an unforced error.

rooney giving the ball away when he had control of the ball is a defensive error. he was completely in possession & his error was not forced. he decided to make a clearance that gave the possession back to the opponents which ultimately led to a goal.

How can you then use a lack of defensive errors to defend(pun intended) Ferdinand?

because rio had no control of possession when the goal was scored - that was what i was telling you earlier about british pundits' necessity to blame someone for every goal conceded. sometimes, you just have to applaud the opponents' ingenuity.

who committed the defensive error when maradona dribbled past 6 defenders and scored in mexico 86? if you are confused, ask dayokanu to help you out. cheesy grin
