I don’t think he trusts me him without the ball yet. Iqbal still has work today in terms of the defensive side of things and coping with physicality.

However he should be getting whatever minutes are available off the bench until the end of the season instead of someone like VDB. Going on loan might also be another pathway to getting minutes.

Mainoo’s ceiling is far higher than theirs but for now one of those 2 might have a role in the team. Which it is I am not sure.

We can’t just discount Fred’s ability to keep making the Brazil squad. He has his strong points and his weaknesses, however I don’t see any aspect of the game in which he is better than Mainoo apart from maybe stamina as a full grown man.

It is easier to compare McTom and Mainoo since I watched both for the academy and reserves. The difference is like night and day. Mainoo at 16 was dominating practically every midfielder he met in the academy and at 17 was dominating 21 yr old midfielders in the reserves. McTom was an average academy midfielder who got into the reserve team as an attacker after their striker Rashford was promoted to the senior team.

Mainoo is above average in every department, and apart from a possibly weak left foot he has no real weaknesses as a midfielder. It is like getting a Paul Pogba with a bit less technique but more work rate.

Why is everyone here sounding like it's VDB that's stopping the youngsters from getting minutes? How many minutes has VDB played?

Because they put in good performances from time to time. McFred are good 50 percent of the tube but bad the other 50 percent. The problem is you can never predict if it’s good McFred or bad McFred that will appear.

VDB on the other hand is bad almost 100 percent of the time. So any minutes he gets are wasted minutes.

Finally, these academy players are very inexperienced and might not be ready to play the long minutes that McFred play but they are definitely ready to play VDB’s measly minutes.

Definitely. However you start with the worst of the lot. If by January VDB can’t show quality he needs to be offloaded. The McFred situation will most likely will be discussed in the off-season by which time we would most likely have new owners.
