Reason to bid for yourself is that if FOR EXAMPLE you go with the bank rate at 14.25%for 91days NTB and it closes at 16.25%, the bank will gain the 2% freely from you plus the custodian fee and safe keeping fee there will still charge you..
Bote that 2% gain is a big amount if your bidding with a large amount of money but may be small if your bidding with small amount of money...

Just my thinking oooh

Not necessarily correct. The way the auction works is thus: if the bank bids with a certain percentage and this percentage falls within the band of successful bid rates and is not above the marginal rate, the bank gets what it bids for. If the bank doesn't estimate correctly then it would get a lower rate.

Please explain with percentages and figures for us not in the banking industry to learn...

Thanks

If you check the CBN webpage ( https://www.cbn.gov.ng/rates/GovtSecurities.asp ) for the results of TB auction you'll see three rows around the bottom of the first schedule: Range of bid rates, Successful bid rates and Marginal Rate. The first represents the highest and lowest rates quoted by bidders, the second is for the range of successful bid rates while the third is the maximum rate that the CBN will pay for your money.

In my previous explanation, I was referring to the successful bid rates row. If you bid lower than the marginal rate but within the band of successful bid rates you get what you bid for. That could explain why you get a lower rate at the primary market auction.

Capisce?

My explanation will be clearer once you open that CBN webpage

@feelamong

Thanks for the info.

Standard Chartered quoted a range 18% - 18.5% for 364 days.

Do you advise we go with the midpoint between the two bands, say 18.2% or we stick with the lower limit of 18% to play safe?

Do you think it is safe for me to bid for 182 at 17% or higher? Your advice would be appreciated.

After 04/08/16, the next bid date is 11/08/16, so I think I could take the chance of loosing Out on the 4th to get back in on the 11th.

So I would bid 17.50% or even 18.00% for 91days that maybe a little high handed but am willing to take the risk.

Correct me if am wrong

Well, Not bad though but If I must specify, my safe bid rate will be 16.0%-16.5%.

BTW: Hope you know it's late to place bid now?
