There are two sides to the article published herein. There is a difference between having an education and being educated. First and foremost, studying abroad is maybe the easiest route to obtain a visa to the US. once most people are in, they try everything possible to stay put, I am not trying to generalise here but a lot prefer to stay under the guise of acquiring more degrees. So people keep piling up certificates. thus you come across Nigerians with pockets of degrees without any coherence in the sequence that such degrees are obtained. Education is a profitable sector in the West and they have so structured it that most end up with a catch 22 situation. I ran into a fellow Nigerian whose taxi I boarded enroute work in NY,he is a Phd student who has delayed the submission of his final thesis just to remain in the US. When I asked him about his post Phd plans he simply relied thus Bros na to go for another qualification because na the only way to remain here be that. God bless Nigeria! |

Often for the wrong reasons.... Thank God I'm following my passion. With my single bachelors, because I believe in achievements rather than wasting time stockpiling degrees, I have never been held back. I've even been invited to work for RIM (in their prime) and Amazon. Real life experience in your career, especially in my field, beats "degrees" anyday. I don't see the wisdom in giving schools more of my money, something I could use to do SERIOUS down payment on another house. If I go for a post-grad degree, it would be for something I really want to do. |

igbo2011: Really though, the whole concept of blocking IP addresses is just stupid. It's not like people browse the internet with static IPs. These things change. @Shymexx, if you weren't explicilty banned, It's likely on the last IP reshuffle you were granted an IP address that previously belonged to someone that was banned. |
Re: Survey: Nigerians Most Educated In The U.S! by nigerisgreat: 5:19pm On Apr 07, 2012 |
Africans from Nigeria (89.1 percent), Ghana (85.9 percent), Botswana (84.7 percent), and Malawi (83 percent) were the most likely to report having a high school degree or higher. Those born in Cape Verde (44.8 percent) and Mauritania (60.8 percent) were the least likely to report having completed a high school education. Nobody should gloat about it. Firstly, they constitute a very small segment of the population making it statistically insignificant. Secondly, most Africans here are children of elites who can afford to send their wards abroad while they close their eyes to the chronic educational problems at home. Still, I want to say, BRAVO Nigeria!!!!!!! Yes, you are far better than the perception accorded to you. |

ekt_bear: Heheif you have to wonder about this, then you may need some gingko biloba to amp your brain up . seriously though, if you live in nigeria, you are sort of in a vacuum. you dont see the whole picture. you tend to see the world from a half baked point of view and this point of view is what makes you (as most people in nigeria do) worship white people, have images of white jesus in your church, bow down to white expatriates in nigeria and treat them better than you treat your fellow nigerians. living in nigeria breeds a virulent form of self hate that is only manifested as soon as someone of a different race steps on the scene (could even be a lebanese or an indian or a chinese )and then you start seeing the coonery and buffoonery and subservience pop out. however once you step out of nigeria, for once in your life, you get the full picture, you actually get to see people for what they really are. you see the caucsians and asians and whomever for what they really are. and any right minded person will develop a bit of militancy after that. all that coonery and shucking and jiving and subservience flies out the window. any man who loves a man who doesnt love him has to be mentally retarded on some level. even the bible says in ecclesiastes 7 vs 7 -OPPRESSION MAKES A WISE MAN MAD. who is oppressing the world ? the caucasians. so you are supposed to be mad. it is biblical. 1 Like |

Cheap Talk. 37% of 100 = 37 9% OF 1000 = 90. Why are we all jubilating. Have they told you the population of Nigerians compared to Americans. Abi are we saying Nigerians are now more than Americans in their own country? Percentage without a number attached to it is no value. Pips take note. |

"Being Black, you are already at a disadvantage," Oluyinka Olutoye, an associate professor of pediatric surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, told the Houston Chronicle. "You really need to excel far above if you want to be considered for anything in this country." That's the big issue in Yankee, you end up with all the education working as professional laborer if you are even lucky, otherwise you end up as taxi driver. |

SEFAGO If they are willing to accept International students who are African then discriminate against those who are british just because of tuition does not make sense at all. ^^Education and admission into the UK( higher Education) is far more complexthan meets the cursory immigrant eyes lacking the sophistication and awareness of the inherent history/sociology of the place. Most Africans(Nigerians) lack basic understanding of the societies they find themselves hence we bumble along because we do not have the national cultural base or foundation for a cohesive worldview that guides our informed or uninformed actions anywhere we find ourselves. Education in the UK has become a very big business racket for the British government. If you have the 'dough' as a foreign/international student you're very welcomed if you can pay the very extortionate "overseas" fees upfront. Education in the UK has always been very economically based, elitist/class based and highly politicised. It's truly "OLD" Europe Most local(British) students these days are abandoning higher education because of the "market" forces governing tuition fees and living expenses for the local British prospective student desiring college or university education. It has become a luxury for most local students hence choices are very limited especially for the poorer immigrant community of the UK(Nigerians) included. As a matter of fact British(White) students are now seeking admissions into universities abroad in countries like Poland, Czech republic, the rest of Europe etc because of the "politics" of education in Britain. Education policy in Scotland is very different from England and it is cheaper or subsidised for Nationals only. British Education has always been elitist and was designed as such originally before it was expanded to appear "inclusive" to the uninformed/uneducated eye and mind. Please we should not outrightly condemn or malign their system. It's a product of a very powerful Imperial Nation and people who know their "Purpose and Mission" in life/ the "world" where the sun never sets for King and country(Empire). The history and purpose of British education makes for interesting reading indeed . Immigrants were never intended to be part and parcel of the equation of real British society. America would be relatively open and inclusive but we know the history, size and the social dynamics of the place hence it's very futile to compare the Uk to the USA. Nigerians have excelled in practically every sphere of "Academia" or "education" but are we not getting over ourselves by thinking that "literacy", "education"(highly-certificated persons)etc is the same as being a truly Educated person?. Perhaps this is where much of our so called 'national' problems lye. Education to the Nigerian is basically another "consumer" item or accessory or truthfully a "Meal" ticket for survival and nothing more, hence we are very static or underdeveloped because our understanding of what Education really means is lost to us unlike the Chinese, Indian or Arab. Education is beyond mere "Meal" ticket. The British like the rest of the West and the Asians understand the full concept and importance of "proper" national education for sustainability of their civilisation/nation. Education is actually about warfare in its true sense not just about meal tickets hence Africans never really excel or transform anything but job hunters more than any other group anywhere home or abroad. We do not yet understand that the world is in competition(War) and we are not yet a nation let alone planning or thinking about proper Education for self/nationhood either. We are just mere lone rangers bumbling along in the world full of hyenas. The analysis of the Nigerian system by StrangerF, PhysicsQED and Kilode?! are very on point. |

Nebeuwa: This brought a smile to my face, because I am included in this survey. the whole of you including yourself in such survey and getting proud about it are all fools...soon it will be dawned on you to realise that where ever you are as long as its not your home, you will always take what they give to you...and for you to be complaining about been credited like the asians, then u are a bigger fool...cos even a blind deaf and dumb man knows how the asians have been impacting developments in their countries and communities. who will give you respect when all u do is to study there and at the end refuse to go back home..or even if u are staying there make the best of it...but instead u prefer staying to fight for menial jobs and be wanting them to respect you just like that...and when u go back to nigeria, u wont try to calm down but be bragging all out as if you own the poor country u left nothing good for not even a reputation. Stop all these rubbish about being credited over there and make the best of urself and for people around you...first u should see how the asians have been setting up companies and be employing themselves out there. For u,...u'll want to have all to yourself, big names, titles etc and at the end level zero |
Re: Survey: Nigerians Most Educated In The U.S! by mayoroflag(m): 1:49am On Apr 08, 2012 |
A few points to note I think it will be proper to respect the choice of people to decide whether they want to come back to Nigeria or migrate to resettle in another part of the world. There are consequences for either actions. So much for the Afrocentrism, however, many have fought from within only to be eliminated by their own people. Sometimes the doctrines of afrocentrism and socialism are so muddled up while western imperialism is so demonized whereas history has it that many if not most socialist experiments have failed its proponents the world over, whereas the west was imperializing asia in the 50s/60s/70s only for the tide to be turned on the West now. Much beyond e-rhetoric, we need to admit that there is something that Africans are getting wrong. And we cannot keep blaming every other race except ourselves. Nobody will treat you as an inferior except you allow him/her.... And this is for both the black leader and follower to ponder on.... |
