One thing I know for sure is that we really don’t appreciate just how ridiculously consistent Benzema’s goal scoring record is. I only learned to appreciate it until 1–2 weeks ago when I looked at his numbers and compared them to other great strikers.

Since apparently I have too much time to waste on my hands, I decided to compile the career goal and assist data of a select group of 50 top forwards of the last 25 years. To do this, I used the ridiculously comprehensive database, which includes:

Most domestic European leagues and cups (1990-)
Some big American leagues/cups: US, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil (2000-). No Colombia or Uruguay, though.
Some big leagues/cups in Africa, Asia, Oceania: Qatar, Saudi Araba, Japan, South Korea, China, Egypt, South Africa, Australia (2000-)
Most big international club tournaments: Champions League, Europa League, Copa Libertadores, African CL, Asian CL, Club World Cup, etc.
Almost all national team games, especially from 1995 onwards. Includes official friendlies.
In other words, we can safely say the career records you will see below include all competitions.

First, I calculated the full career goals + assists per 90 mins of this select group of 50 top forwards of the last 25 years. As you can see, in this particular metric Benzema ranks 7th.










Then to show that Benzema’s raw goal-scoring rate is also quite good, I calculated the career non-penalty goals per 90 mins for the same group of 50 forwards. Benzema ranks 15th in this case.








Mind you, this is the same Benzema we have defended for years by saying that “his goal-scoring record does not tell you the whole story”. The same Karim whose associative skill improves players around him and has often been one of the tactical cornerstones of Real Madrid’s offensive structure. That Karim is also one of the most prolific goal scorers of the last 25 years.

The only reason we don't recognize Benzema's proper place in football history is that he played in a league with the handful of forwards who were actually more productive than him (Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, Suarez). Only compared to them could he ever be considered "inconsistent" or a “poor goal scorer”.

So remember, folks: it's fair and accurate to say Benzema has been inconsistent post-2016. But do not let that obscure the fact that he has produced almost 1 G+A p90 throughout his entire career.

I hope that these numbers can help us put Karim's career into perspective. For example, one can find historic striker lists that include Raúl, Eto'o, Zlatan, Inzaghi, Henry, etc...but not Benzema. And I believe he is, at least, at their level. He could be perfectly considered one of the ten best strikers of the last 25 years.

Addendum: A few caveats about these goal-assist rankings

Let's remember that a simple G/A ranking is reductionist and fails to consider so, so many factors. If that were not the case, then I could use that ranking to say Mario Gomez was as good as Ronaldo Nazário

For example, Benzema benefited from being the center forward of a historic Real Madrid for a decade and played alongside the ridiculous goal-assist machine that is Ronaldo, with both players feeding off each other to boost their stats. That does inflate his numbers compared to other strikers. By the way, similar things could be said about Suarez or Neymar: they were super productive but their stats benefited from playing alongside Messi.

It also shouldn’t come as a surprise that most players who top that ranking all played for the superclubs of the last decade (Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG, FC Bayern). After the Bosman ruling, we have seen an increasing concentration of wealth and player talent in a select few clubs. The performance gap between top clubs and low-mid tier clubs in the big European leagues is getting wider. That explains many things, such as why strikers of the last 10 years have scored more goals than their predecessors, or why trophy doubles and trebles are more common.

Because of these issues, it would be very wrong to use the goal-assist charts I posted as the only metric to decide which forwards are better.
