"My name is" appears to be correct. Because we don't put a coma behind each name. For example, "My name is Akinbade Olusola Esther." But if u were to say "My names are" You should put a coma behind each name as there are more than one name. For example, " My names are " Akinbade,Olusola, and Esther" Nobody does that. So it appears incorrect. My 2cents.

Why do we fail to reason correctly? If 'MY' is a pronoun and 'I' is also a pronoun and they both represent a single entity, NOBODY can make me believe that 'my names are' is incorrect. REASON - why does English Language refers to the pronoun 'I' as plural and gives it a plural verb 'HAVE' whereas it represents a single entity? Or do you say 'I HAS' or 'I HAVE'? A person's name takes a single verb. Even if you have five (5) names, it is seen as a single noun and as such should take a single verb "is". Therefore, my name is....It is not grammatically correct to say my names are...This is a typical Nigerian way of introduction and could be classified as Nigerian English. I hope this helps.

You still don't get it? "My names are..." is only used in law courts and is best regarded as legalese. It is not used in everyday English. It's like when you hear some people say (when trying to sound intelligent) "monies" instead of "money". "Monies" is legalese and should only be used in the context of law to describe cash from multiple sources. You shouldn't use it outside the context of law.

The purpose is it allows the court to refer to the litigant using any of the stated names interchangeably.

You can only say my names are if you have other semantic meanings attached to the question you are being asked but grammatically whatever sequence of names you are displaying if it is reffering to a single entity should follow the gramammatical structure of SINGULAL NOUN that operates with plural verb.(RULE OF CONCORD).

@telthetruth, I wouldnt agree that my names are is not English,it is but grammatically its not correct if the spreaker uses it to refer to a single entity and if he is not addressing another question beneath the surface level.Under Pragmatics and Semantics the speaker that uses it is answering another question that is not reflected on the surface structure.Whom he is addressing might know better,the meaning is within the context in which it is being used.
