In a letter sent to the Senate today and read by the Senate President at the commencement of Plenary, the President is asking for approval to rename Federal University of Technology Umudike to Michael Okpara University Umudike; Federal Univeristy of Technology Yola to Modibbo Adama University and University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.

Yola — President Goodluck Jonathan has given approval for the Federal University of Technology (FUTY) Yola to be named Modibbo Adama University of Technology,Yola in honour of the founder of the Adamawa Emirate.

Addressing newsmen yesterday, Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Bashir Haruna Usman said the president decided to immortalize the late scholar by naming the institution after him. Moddibo Adama, who was born in 1779 at Wuro -Chekke, was an outstanding leader, who created a centralized state system in the Benue and Faro Valley out of a multitude of non-centralised polities in the 19th century.

The Vice Chancellor however added that despite the change of name, all former documents and correspondences bearing the Federal University of Technology, Yola remain valid. He said the new name takes effect on October 1, 2011.

Moddibo Adama was a jihadist, one of Dan Fodio's key lieutenants. he is responsible for the forceful islamization of the tribes in the area now known as Adamawa and the displacement of many others to what is now Cameroun.
