Then you contradicted yourself by saying;

See, not all atheists engage in deep critical thinking before deciding to become atheists.
Most atheists are born as atheists, and told by parents that there is no God and after growing up to see no 'logical' proof of any God, decide to stick with atheism.
Some atheists are just rebellious, butt-hurt, cry babies that concluded that God doesn't exist because their prayers were not answered. grin.
Some atheists are simply atheits cos they cannot fathom how a God can exist and still allow all the evil in the world to happen; they decide that their imagination of how a god should be is not what they get in reality so they jump into atheism.

Inshort there are quite a number of reasons why people become atheists and a lot of these reasons have nothing to do with intelligence.

p.s.
I found the first comic very hilarious.

They are simply cowards!

What most of you Nigerian Christians don't realise is that you are all worshipping God of the Jews (Yaweh). You all need to leave Yorubaland that you have destroyed. What has Christianity benefited us since the missionaries shoved it down the throats of our fore-fathers. No electricty, bad roads, corruption and poverty. Let those at the government starts swearing upon Shango, Ayilala and Ogun whether there won't be 500% transparency. Yes, I have met female atheists. I am particularly struck by their sane reasoning, their desire to know, their openness and above all, their impressive world view. Many women atheists I have met can carry on fantastic conversations on philosophy, music, psychology or other highly specialised fields like anthropology. To find such women is rather rare, but in the end very pleasing. Quite a number of "very religious" Nigerian girls (and unfortunately guys) are often too contented with church, Nollywood, cinemas or pommes frites to give a hoot about the world.
I do sense that it's the female atheists who long to change their environment, to preach understanding to their neighbours in the light of these difficulties we face globally. For me, there is nothing more impressive that a woman who is confident, independent and absolutely sure she's as good as any man. A lot of women claim this, but we all know it's a ruse. But then, many female atheists I know or have met are very much like this; this contrasts sharply with the behaviour of their servile, christianly counterparts.

Sauer dude, it is quite pathetic. And the fact that many religious men are not happy with an intellectually sound woman further discourages women from broadening their knowledge.
It's like they tell themselves, "Hey, don't be too smart, just be adorable/sexy so you don't frighten the men into thinking that you'll oppose their authority after marriage."

Well, I sure will criticize whatever warrants it; jonathan, the Nigerian government, Nigerian pastors and churches, the bible, etc. They all have one thing in common: they all aren't helping Nigeria! angry
There is probably nothing wrong in believing in god as christians would have us do. So, one could at least afford them that. However, there is everything wrong and criminal about believing that those who aren't in the same shoes as you will end up in some imaginary "lake of fire".

And what about if that ''imaginary'' lake of fire is real....whats gonna be ur excuse!

The truth of the matter is that I have 2 options, but you have only 1 option!

Good point. This is the chief reason children simply follow the religions of their parents. It's almost an innate action. It bothers me seriously that these children don't even stop for a minute to examine in detail exactly what is being handed to them. The blindness, the follow-follow, the herd mentality, the conformity; all these just stink. Didn't they ever ask questions in class? Yet, if asked, they'd claim they have arrived at their practices by themselves and needed no prodding from their parents. yeah, right!
I hope your book really isn't the communist manifesto

But it wont be ''blindness, follow follow......'' if the child turns out to be an atheist like his/her parent(s)!

@the bolded part

If you're to rid yourself off that - embrace your own inborn spirituality.. We Africans are spiritual beings, but we've been indoctrinated with so much thrash - that we've lost our sense of reasoning...

That's why Africa is as messed up as it is... Religion is our biggest problem - if we can rid ourselves off religion, and embrace our inborn African spirituality - we will find our way in the world again..

Plz, read about the council of Nicea 325A.D - that was the genesis of everything.

What makes u believe ''the council of Nicea 325A.D''....who wrote it?
Tell me, do u believe everything written in the Holy Bible?

god! (or whatever you believe in lol) bless you!
Thats what i've always said, growing up i've wanted to do many things, and the parents will just dismiss it sayin 'no its not good' 'erm why is it not good' 'dont ask me questions' and thats typically the way things are especially back home. Nobody is asking any questions, women don't raise their eyebrows when they are told to 'submit' they just do! People are told they must behave a certain way, nobody says 'what for' they just do! and these people have no have no sense of self. It's very very obvious here on this website, the herd mentality is too much. Nobody seems to want to apply logic to anything (especially if it's to do with religion or tradition) and questioning their beleifs is like you've killed their families!

Even if you are religous you still need to ask questions, you need to consult the bible for yourself and try to understand what the pov of the writer is, whether it applies, whether it's personal. Lets not forget it was human beings like ourselves that wrote the Bible. None of them were perfect.

o and i'm not sure- it was a UCL professors note on Karl Marx's writings, i'll dig the book up somewhere. But I think it's based mostly on the communist manifesto. It also had some of the things he wrote when he was a teen. The book was brilliant, his name is jonathan something i'll find him.

.....but Karl Marx was perfect, that u cant sit down to decipher maybe he was trying to brianwash or not!

Mr. ghostofsparta, why are you taking Qur'anic verses out of context to prove your point?
That verse, 'Fight the unbelievers . . . . ' in your second picture was directed to Muslims that were going to engage in a war back then, it is not an instruction for all Muslims to keep following till today. You craftily cherry-picked the verse and didn't bother adding surrounding verses that explain it better.
Take another verse of the Qur'an out of context again and I'll bring a barrage of violent verses from your bible for you, you deceitful crook. wink tongue cool

Are you saying, some Quranic verses lose relevance in time and sometimes location? What's the authority for the Quran and what are the rules of interpretation?

That doesn't come out right. If atheism is a religion, then its opposite will inevitably be: theism. If theism is a religion, then what will Islam and Christianity be??

So much maturity on display, I see. You have an "African" mind indeed: completely reflective of the pathetic state of the continent.

On the internet nowadays, when you are unable to offer a decent rebuttal in a debate, just call your opponent "gay" or "fag", and voilà! You win.

What I wrote:

What I meant:
The verse is an instruction that was given to the Muslims during the war they were engaged in, as at the time of its revelation. That instruction is not a rule or commandment for every single Muslim to follow. That verse serves to enlighten Muslims today of the things that happened to the early Muslims. It's not a command for all Muslims.
Hmmmmm. . . . . smiley

Meaning its not relevant for present day muslims, as they didn't partake in the first jihad right?

First of all, I don't support the Bible and don't need you to bring forth barrage of violent verses from the bible since you'll only be attacking yourself simply because they are both the same abrahamic religions bent on violent, deception, fear and control.

I haven't taken that particular verse out of context. See your defence is shallow because if it was directed to Muslims that were going to engage in war BACK THEN, then what relevance does it presence bear been in the Qu'ran? If it's not an instruction for all Muslims to follow till today then don't you think it could motivate Islamic extremism as perpetrated in modern times? Such verse is liable for deliberate mis-interpretation by some ulterior-motivist to instigate jihad and other political agenda.
