Realdeals: Not it will, it has reduced. Though most bank have stopped naira card usage for both ATM and online transactions, GTB still allows it but peg monthly usage at $100 GTB will likely increase the limit a little, with time, and the CBN might just bring them back in, like FBN.
$100 is better than $0.

Ngozi123: Fair enough, you do believe in radical change but many who share your stance in this matter do not, hence why I said that people who share your reasoning are 'less likely' to want radical change. Btw, I'm not always this negative, in fact, I even applauded Buhari on his anti-corruption stance as it's one thing that I do agree with him on. However, I haven't seen much under this current administration, or in previous ones, that have led me to believe that Nigeria is progressing at an acceptable rate. In fact, in some ways, I believe that Nigeria is regressing. I entertain your fears, cause it could of course go either way . . . the below is a cut from my comment on my outlook going forward . . .
On the longer term, if the rice and general agric initiatives yield positively, and if the over $100b in investment commitments Kachikwu, Adeosun, and Emefiele got from their trips to Asia, Europe, and North America would trickle in (a 40 member delegation from China should be in the country any moment this October to put their money where their mouth is), and we can have some of our assets sold or leased soon enough, it will help MASSIVELY with the economy and the Naira situation going forward.
We need investments in our Oil and Gas sector, Rail, Power, Housing, Roads, Agric, Car manufacturing and other Manufacturing to make the economy and the Naira practically strong.
Ultimately, our best hope (considering how good we are at making simple stuffs be rocket science) of getting out of the woods while we figure other exports bringing in Forex is, Dangote refineries and Fertilizer plant and power plant, the other refinery in Akwa Ibom, NNPC leased or PPP refineries, the other ones coming up in Okolola and Ogun state which all combined, can refine over 1.4 million barrels of crude; enough to eliminate our Forex needs for refined fuel with a lot more to spare for exports (earning Forex from refined fuel export) -- that will be our major game changer -- that, with the earlier listed, can bring the Naira to as low as N100 to $1. |

Ngozi123: Yes, that's because, in isolation, it's not really a meaningful improvement at all. I admire your optimism but we've been in a similar situation before and it has yielded very few positive results. You can pick out as many little positives as you can from the situation at hand now but for every positive result we've seen, there are 9 more lurking right behind it, the most pertinent being the fact that certain parts of the country are suffering from a famine. Nigeria, one of the richest countries in the world and the biggest economy in Africa, is undergoing a famine right now. Let that sink in...
This doesn't just mean that the country is 'not fine', as you would put it, it means that the country is in a mess right now and it's in need of a rigorous shake up. People like you who like to downplay the country's problems are a part of the problem as you're less likely to believe that a radical change is needed here . Radical changes and moving the country forward is all I ever write about on Nairaland, check my posts and topics, especially on my primary handle '989900' where I have tens of articles of such . . . there are few people on this forum that write about 'solutions' to our present predicaments than I do; would that make me nullify progress no matter how little? No.
I criticize the gov't, yes, but would that make me justify those who would never see anything good in positive steps taken by the gov't, or those who never get up to do something positive to help their personal situation, not to mention others, or their country? No. |

Business › Re: IMF Affirms Nigeria As Africa’s Biggest Economy!!! by 989900D: 1:26pm On Oct 19, 2016 |
Ngozi123: It's not really. You downplay Nigeria's issues by saying simply saying that "they could do better", hence why I said it was a massive understatement. Certain parts of Nigeria are currently undergoing a famine- they could do be doing a lot better than they are now. I agree that the US has a very distorted distribution of wealth but Nigeria's own is so much worse that one cannot even begin to compare the two. The below was my comment. America is the biggest economy in the world, with GDP per capita at over $50K, and there are destitute . . . even in the gulf where some countries have GDP per capita in excess of $70k, they have poor people. While we could do better, and this is far, far, short of where we need to be as a country, calling others myopic 'cause they feel happy about this little positive ain't cool.
Would you rather a GDP of $200b divided by 170 million people, or $400b divided by 170 million people? I don't see how that seems to indulge Nigeria doing poorly. My point is/was we have an improvement from a few months back in this department, with hope of building on that (better than retrogress), but your comment pissed on everybody applauding the improvement. I mean, it is not like we do not know we are not where we should be, others and I already stressed that out in our earlier comments on this same thread.
I only referred to the US and some other rich countries to stress that rich country does not necessarily translate to people not going hungry. And as bad as things are in Nigeria ATM, some businesses are making the money of their lives, some that could not build a house or buy a car in the time of plenty are just doing so now. Does that mean I am trying to say everything is fine? No. It is called 'drawing perspective'.

Ngozi123: That's literally the only positive I see here. Nigeria has been Africa's biggest economy for many years now but how exactly has that transcended to the average Nigerian? I'm surprised that there are people celebrating this news, it just goes to show how myopic some Nigerians are. America is the biggest economy in the world, with GDP per capita at over $50K, and there are destitute . . . even in the gulf where some countries have GDP per capita in excess of $70k, they have poor people. While we could do better, and this is far, far, short of where we need to be as a country, calling others myopic 'cause they feel happy about this little positive ain't cool.

wristbangle: Generally there is recession in the globe just that it varies in countries. That of Nigeria is quite heavy due to our over-reliance on oil hence a monopolised economy. We hope to see a government that will harness other untapped resources in the country such as Agriculture, Natural resources, Information Technology and other mainstreams, not just to stay as Africa giant but to compete with other developed countries in the world but it's a pity we have never had good leadership in power since independence. Well said, if we ever lived true to the world's expectation of us, we should be at the minimum, a trillion dollar economy -- and I mean worst case scenario.
Like some commenter pointed out: Lagos' pulling Nigeria's weight at the moment.
And with recent developments between Lagos and Ogun states, the GDP combined of both states could well be comfortably challenging for 2nd or 3rd largest economy in Africa in some few years to come.

Career › Re: How Do I Turn Down My Boss' Advances Without Losing My Job? (please Advice) by 989900D: 7:54am On Oct 19, 2016 |
Aparche: Let your prayer topic be that "God should deliver you from unreasonable & wicked men" like your boss. You will be surprised that he will stop disturbing you and will also not sack you. In fact he will come to you and apologize for his behaviour. Then come back here and testify... 5% chance the above will work. 'Soberdrunk' already gave her the best advice (assuming the boss is the CEO/Alpha and Omega of the firm) don't invite him to your house though. To be frank, peace will 'likely' only come when she leaves the job, and that's sad.
If she goes ahead and sleep with him for the job, there is no 100% chance she won't lose the job either, either on the long or short run -- she might lose more than the job even if the wife gets to know, she might have to sacrifice being in a true relationship too; need I mention other risks and e.t.c.
P.S. I don't get why bosses have to force themselves on their employees; that's intimidation and a whole lot worse. If she likes you and she wants to play out of her own volition, fine.
