November 2023 is around the corner and ground works are underplay among the political gladiators in an attempt to claim the biggest seat in Kogi state. Going by antecedent, the confluence state was created in 1991 and ever since, governors have been elected from all the three senatorial districts except from the West. Kogi is blessed with both human and material resources, yet the state cannot be placed where the founding fathers projected it to be. The citizens cannot enjoy better lives and in the list of the top 20 richest states in Nigeria, Kogi is nowhere to be found.

In Nigeria, people are now interested in election matters and have become more wise in choosing their leaders. As the Kogi governorship election draws nearer, the environment is becoming more heated. Alhaji Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dino Melaye, have all set to battle it out at the polls.

When it comes to governance, the best metrics to measure performance is good service delivery to the people. Anything short of this amounts to bad governance. Govenor Yahaya Bello has anointed a candidate from his party to carry on his legacy and critics are of the views that the administration has performed woefully and do not wish to witness a repetition.

A lot has happened in the almost eight years of the APC led administration especially with the prolonged screening of civil servants where many spent months without salaries and speculations that some local government workers received peanuts of N2500 as monthly pay. In terms of basic infrastructure, there is inadequate road networks which has made the transportation of farm produce from rural to urban areas impossible.

The educational level is low as primary school pupils still sit on bare floors to learn. This is not to talk of the limited electricity supply and poor healthcare facilities. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Kogi state has a poverty rate of 49.8%, which is higher than the national poverty rate of 40.1%.

The NBS also reported that the state has a high rate of unemployment with 39.0%. All these are signs of bad leadership and if things are to go by the present voting pattern of Nigerians where non performing leaders are voted out, then the Kogi opposition could possibly have upper hands at the polls.

However, when it comes to security, the present administration cannot be said to have performed badly. This is because the governor has done much to secure the state by empowering the local vigilantes and involving traditional rulers to act as watchdogs of their respective localities. Also, the invention of EBIGO is an initiative that further brought unity into the state. The APC is using this area as one of the biggest achievements of the Yahaya Bello administration and they can leverage on this to get the people’s votes.

Another dimension which this election has taken is ethnicity and tribalism. Interestingly, the three leading candidates are from the three major tribes in the state. Each of the tribes is having the “our turn” syndrome. It is either “Igala agenda” or “Ebira agenda”. The only agenda that is not so loud is Okun agenda.

Meanwhile, judging by the voting pattern from the last election in 2019 which had the incumbent Governor Bello, an Ebira man from the Central, and Musa Wada, an Igala from the East as the main opposition, one could easily detect where the winner would come from. Bello enjoyed massive support from his people as he won landslide with 265,879 votes against Wada’s 26,997 votes.

The Igala equally supported their own as Musa Wada scored 124,890 votes to defeat Yahaya Bello in that axis who scored 90, 317 votes. Even with PDP having its deputy from the west, APC still won that district with the margin of 12, 228 votes.

Currently, the situation is the same and at the same time different. The three major tribes are vying for the office and the chance of winning is open to all. Tension upon tension, no one can say who the winner is for now. It is Yahaya Bello against others and he has vowed to win the seat for his party. Let’s see who dares to stop the “white lion”.

Bello Moves Harder Against APC National Headquarters Expels Hon. Shaibu Ikani Okolo from local Chapter of All Progressive Congress (APC)

Kogi 2023: I Will Review Sack of Kogi Workers, Dino Assures

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in November 11, 2023 Kogi State Governorship election, Senator Dino Melaye, has promised to review cases of sacked workers in the State in the past seven years.

Senator Melaye, who revealed his plan in Lokoja when he received in audience some of the victims of the cruel dismissal of staff in State and Local Government Services across Kogi State, assured of his determination to revisit all such cases with the hope of providing justice to the victims.

“When by the grace of God, your will and the will of all our people, I am elected and sworn into office as your governor, I will revisit your cases and ensure that you get justice,” Melaye told the representatives of the sacked workers.

Speaking further, he said, “the administration that I will lead, by the grace of God, will wear a human face. We are coming to work for the people, and in doing that, all the victims of the maladministration of the past seven years will get justice where they have been inhumanly treated.

“I’m aware of people who lost their lives and yet their families were not compensated; lecturers in our higher institutions that were summarily dismissed; staff in the state or local governments employment that were relieved of their employment just because money were sent into their bank accounts by relatives or withdrawals were made from their salaries accounts outside of Kogi State. I assure you that you will get justice,” Senator Melaye stressed.

He noted that in the weeks ahead, he will make public the processes through which the victims of dismissal and other ill treatments in the state public service will register their grievances for redress.

The Julius Abure faction of the Labour Party (LP) says the claim by Lamidi Apapa that the court has affirmed him as the authentic National Chairman of the party is false.

Malam Umar Farouk, National Secretary of the faction, said this at a news conference in Abuja on Friday.


Farouk said that the Certified True Copy of the suit did not involve Abure.

“This conference is called purposely to clear the air on yet another attempt by some of our former members. They rebelled against the party and went ahead to shamelessly misinform members of the public on the huge progress being made to reposition LP as one of the biggest political parties in Nigeria.

“Lamidi Apapa and a few others are being sponsored, their assignment is to ensure that no progress is achieved in the party. The heavily funded dissidents have tried to mislead the courts and some section of the media to harass the party leadership but all have failed,” he said.


Farouk said the Court of Appeal sitting in Benin had affirmed Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

“Only yesterday, the Court of Appeal Owerri, which sat in Abuja, gave judgement in the case brought before it by one Basil Maduka, one of the two aspirants deceived by the Apapa’s camp to participate in their illegal primaries.

“The matter was on who the real LP candidate in the Imo governorship election is and not to challenge Abure’s position as chairman. The court also ordered that the status quo remains with Sen. Athan Achonu as the validly nominated candidate of LP for 2023 Imo governorship election.


“It noted that Basil Maduka has no locus to seek redress in the court as he is not known by the LP, ” he said.

Farouk said the Appeal Court in Edo had since ruled that Abure was the authentic chairman of the LP and everything done under his leadership, including nominating candidates for elections, was legal.

He said it thus meant that whoever was not satisfied with the ruling of the Appeal Court was permitted under the law to approach the Supreme Court to seek a review of the Appeal Court judgement.

“The LP took time to explain this trajectory because these men are out to ensure that the party suffers immeasurably and they will stop at nothing from achieving the mandate of their sponsors.

”We state categorically that Achonu remains the LP’s governorship candidate in Imo as no court has stated otherwise.”


He said the Independent National Electoral Commission had since published his name as the party’s candidate.(NAN)

I have two main reasons for choosing to endorse Olumide akpata.

— Olumide hails from the Apata family, who proudly originated from the Yoruba people and have assimilated well into Edo state. This would make Olumide the first Yoruba man to govern Edo state. Additionally, with his experience as NBA chairman, he would be capable of governing Edo state according to the rule of law and improving the state.

— Despite Olumide's affiliation with the Labour Party, and considering that I am a strong supporter of President Bola Tinubu, I still offer my support to him because Lamidi Apapa is now fully in charge of the Labour Party. Apapa is known as a disciplinarian and a determined fighter. With him leading the party, I am confident that he will guide the Labour Party to victory in the upcoming governorship election.

Finally, Edo state is a no man’s land. Whether someone is Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Esan, Benin, or Nupe, Edo is highly developed and can allow anyone competent to govern the state.
