So the WNBA playoffs started today and I wanted to talk about the format. They play a best of 3 series with a 2/1 game format. The team with the better regular season record play 2 games at home before heading away for the 1 game, if needed.

I don’t like this format because it doesn’t reward the team with the winning record. If the other team (away team) splits the first 2 games, game 3 which would be the series decider will be hosted by the lower seeded team.

Take for example, today the Chicago Sky who are the number 2 seed and defending champions, I might add lost at home to NY Liberty who are seeded 7th. That means, at worst, the Liberty will host the series decider in NY which is a huge advantage. A 1/1/1 format will be better. I hope they seriously consider it.

Also, the WNBA needs to reconsider the rule which forces every WNBA team to fly commercial. If an owner can afford to fly his team via private planes let them be allowed to do it. It is called competitive advantage. It is sad to know that college athletes (basketball/ football) fly private planes across the country and abroad while professional WNBA players are stuck in queues with everyone else trying to board commercial flights and in some instances these flights get cancelled or delayed with lost baggages.

The WNBA have a lot of work to do in making this league more marketable. I know I have talked about this in the past and nothing as far as the level of play has changed. Maybe I am expecting too much but for what they are demanding, they absolutely have to raise their game.
