A group, the Greater Lagos Alliance,
has called for the disqualification of
the Lagos State governorship
candidate of the All Progressives
Congress, Akinwunmi Ambode.
The group said its call became
necessary because of Ambode’s
alleged “history of mental illness.”
The Greater Lagos Alliance in a
statement signed by its President,
Dr. Lanre Adeoye, said “We have
been working behind the scenes for
the enthronement of a new
government that would take off from
where Governor (Babatunde) Fashola
stopped.
“After assessing the two major
candidates (Ambode and Jimi Agbaje
of the Peoples Democratic Party) and
made our position known publicly on
who to support based on their
competencies and comparative
advantages, we are sad to announce
the withdrawal of our support for
the candidate of the APC.”
Adeoye, an American-based neuro-
surgeon, hinged the group’s decision
on the condition of Ambode when he
travelled to the US for routine
checkup.
The statement added: “We met at a
sanatorium where I consult and he
was quite open about the fact that
he has been managing his situation
well. But I wasn’t convinced because
the job of governing Lagos is not for
somebody with such ailment. Lagos
demands someone who is 100 per
cent mentally and physically fit.”
Adeoye said further that after
several consultations and
observations at close range,
Ambode’s carriage vis a vis his
penchant for missing critical political
appointments among other
frightening habits, which had pitted
him against party chieftains, his
group was call for his
disqualification by the Independent
National Electoral Commission.
“We are constrained to call on INEC
to disqualify Ambode because of his
mental imbalance. We cannot take
such risk in Lagos State,” Adeoye
added.
But reacting, the head of Ambode’s
media team, Steve Ayorinde,
described as “wicked, baseless and
cowardly lies being circulated about
our candidate for the Lagos State
Governorship Position, Mr.
Akinwunmi Ambode.”
“The jittery opposition will stop at
nothing in its smear campaign
having failed to contain the soaring
popularity of the APC Governorship
candidate. But we are neither
bothered nor discouraged; and we
know that our numerous supporters
and the generality of well-meaning
Lagosians can see through the lies
and desperations of those who dread
a crushing defeat at the forthcoming
election.
“We know the source of this evil
story as well as their despicable
trumpeters. Well, we’ve got news for
them: April 11, 2015 is almost here
and it’s a date with history, when
the good people of Lagos State will
once again reject the evil
machinations of those political
marauders trying so hard to hijack
their destiny.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr.
Ambode neither suffers from any
ailment nor has ever met or been
treated by a certain Dr. Lanre
Adeoye. This fictional tale should be
disregarded in its entirety.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it is yet to take a decision to shift the general elections or hold them as scheduled.

Kayode Idowu, the spokesperson to the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, disclosed this to PREMIUM TIMES a short while ago.

The presidential and national assembly elections has been fixed for February 14 while those of the governorship and state houses of assembly are scheduled for February 28.

The Nigerian government and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party have been pushing for the postponement of the polls citing the security challenge in the northeast zone of the country as well as INEC’s poor handling of the distribution of the Permanent Voters Cards as reasons.

Although the electoral body has insisted it was ready for the elections, the Council of State rose from its meeting on Thursday asking it to go ahead, while also advising it to consult widely on the matter.

This prompted INEC to commence a fresh round of consultation at the end of which it would address a press conference later today (Saturday) to announce the its decision on the matter.

Mr. Idowu told this newspaper via a text message no decision had been reached on postponement contrary to a report by an international news agency.

In fact when PREMIUM TIMES contacted Mr. Idowu, he spoke in low tone, saying his Commission was in a consultative meeting with the leadership of the 28 political parties.

At the time of this report, members of the Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, were about to take their turn after which the Commission would meet with the 36 state Resident Electoral Commissioners and that of the Federal Capital Territory.

Asked to confirm if the elections had been postponed as reported by some media organisation, Mr. Idowu said, “Nothing like that (has been) decided by INEC yet.”

asking a president to fight corruption is like telling him to be a dictator and interfere with the judicial process.then he has the power to accuse anyone and punish. then absolute power will corrupt.

we have seen the Nigerian law makers concern themselves with irrelevant oversight functions where they even ask for bribe in the process. these are supposed law makers that are meant to strengthen the constitution as the only true tool to tackle corruption.
if our laws clearly spells out how the treasury should be managed and it States clear punishments, if the constitution gives every Nigerian the right to question the government on its spendings.if the constitution mandates the governors and chairmen to make public. its monthly spending,then corruption will be fought squarely.
