is it only in APC states workers have not been paid?ok read this: Vice President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Issa Aremu, has expressed concern over non payment of workers salaries by 22 state governments in the country; A situation he described as unacceptable. In a statement he issued in Kaduna on Thursday, Aremu described the development as a wage theft, wage robbery and economic crime. The NLC Vice President explained that the same governors who had failed to pay workers their salaries for more than three months, were able to mobilise funds to pay their delegates during the just concluded party primary elections across the states. He therefore called on the governors of the affected states go to the same place they got they money to pay delegates and settle the workers’ salaries without further delay. “We see that delay in payment of salaries as wage theft, wage robbery. It is actually an economic crime because Nigeria Labour law says thou shall pay the worker as and when due. In fact by 22nd of every month you must have paid the workers fully. “We never heard of any delegate being owed a single penny during the primary elections, but they cannot get money to pay the workers. In fact, some of the delegates even bought new cars and properties after the primaries because the money they got in just few days is much more than what workers earn in many months”. The NLC Vice President further noted that it was time for the Federal Government to review upward the national minimum wage in order to reflect with emerging economic challenges and also warned against any attempt by government to further impoverish the Nigerian workers with reduction in pay or loss of jobs on account of the recently announced austerity measure by the Federal government. He also noted that the $65 per barrel of crude oil as captured in the 2015 budget confirmed that Nigeria is an oil dependent economy contrary to the claim of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy that the budget is projected on a non oil revenue basis. Instead, the union believed that sustainable budgets were the ones based on revenue arising from real sector of the economy such as domestic manufacturing and exportation of finished goods. Mr Aremu said that the National Assembly, while debating the budget proposal, should put policies that will grow the real sectors of the economy and also ensure that the Central Bank of Nigeria lowers the interest rate and stop the free fall of the Naira which will undermine purchasing power of the working people. He also asked the National Assembly to make sure the budget captured practical measures on reducing cost of governance which must start with drastic reduction of pay and allowances of the Executive and Legislature. As the general elections draw nearer, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan is driving up his re-election campaign across the southwest region of the country. Jonathan, according to a presidential source will be in Ogun on a two-day meeting with party leaders and also with the former governor and chieftain of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Olusegun Osoba. It was reliably gathered that serious scheming is going underneath on how the PDP will win the southwest, especially, Ogun state to spite former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Our correspondent reliably reported that the President will today meet with some monarchs in Abeokuta, which according to the source, is in continuation of the meeting he had with the monarchs penultimate Friday after the commissioning of the second phase of the Olorunsogo power plant in Ogun. President Jonathan will also be in Ijebu Ode tomorrow to meet with the Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona,Ogbagba II at his palace. A palace source confirmed this to our correspondent on phone early this morning that preparation towards the hosting of the President and his entourage are in top gear in the palace. The Presidential source told our correspondent that part of the meeting the President will be holding in Ogun is on how to convince the SDP leadership to step down their governorship candidate for a merger with the PDP,so as to be able to win the State in the April 11,2015 governorship election. It was gathered that the talk had been on between the President and Chief Olusegun Osoba before today,he will be coming to finalise the issue with him and other leaders of the party. It would be recollected also that the Social Democratic Party, SDP has endorsed the President, Jonathan as their Presidential candidate in the coming Presidential election on 28 March,2015. According to the source, “the president is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that he captures Ogun state and the southwest at large. “I can confirm to you that the president is not comfortable with the stand of the former President. We know that Baba Obasanjo is strongly canvassing and campaigning for the APC and with his strength and charisma, if we don’t move faster, he may turn the table against us. “Oga will be meeting with some royal fathers in Ogun. First with the Obas in Egba then later today and by Thursday, we will be at Ijebu Ode to meet with Awujale and other rulers from the Ijebu axis. “The President will also be meeting with Chief Osoba in Abeokuta today. He wants to see how his party, SDP would merge with the PDP to ensure a straight victory for the party in the coming elections. Whatever is going to cost us, we are going to capture Ogun state and by extension, the southwest region. You can agree with me that after the North West region, it is our region here, the southwest, that is next in population and we are battle ready to capture the region. “President Jonathan understands the power and respect the monarchs in this territories and we have resolved to win more votes through this. Royal blessings will be given and that will also add more to our victory, that I’m sure of. “The frontier team have arrived the state since Sunday and they have been working seriously to ensure that where we need crowd, they are available. You know that one of our leaders, Chief Edwin Clark was in town on Monday and he was in Abeokuta and Ijebu Igbo. The visit has a purpose and is part of our plans and strategies. “I want to let you know that President Jonathan is the best for the job now, he has everything it takes to move this country forward and he’ll continue with his transformation agenda and not necessarily the archaic change the opposition is clamouring for. “I want to inform you that our party, PDP will win the governorship, the three senatorial tickets and the nine representatives tickets in the state. The tsunami has arrived to sweep out Amosun with his unfriendly policies and programmes. For any doubting Thomas, the way the APC won in 2011, is the same way we will reclaim our mandate back from them,” the source revealed. When our correspondent contacted the former governor and the chieftain of SDP, Aremo Olusegun Osoba on phone to react to the issue, his line was not going. But speaking with PM News, another chieftain of SDP, the Senator representing Ogun East at the upper house now and the candidate for the party in the March 28, 2015 national assemblies elections, Senator Adegbenga Kaka confirmed that the President will be at Ijebu Ode tomorrow to meet with Awujale. The Ijebu Igbo born former deputy governor however declared that such discussion never existed between his party and the PDP, noting that, if such would happen, their candidate (PDP) will rather step down for the SDP governorship candidate and not other way round. “I was never privy to such meeting and as a leader of the party, I am not sure such thing is happening. How on earth will such a thing happen. It can never happened and if such will happen, how will our candidate be asked to step down for PDP governorship candidate? It’s not happening and will never happen. “But I can confirm to you that President Goodluck Jonathan will be in Ijebu Ode on Thursday and as the Senator representing the area,I will be around to welcome him. “As we are speaking, I’m just arriving from Abuja to join our governorship candidate, Senator Akin Odunsi on Wednesday at Ikenne and on Thursday, I will be at the Awujale’s palace to welcome the President. “Our governorship candidate and other candidates are still in the race. You can see by yourself, the way they have been receiving us in everywhere we have been to. You will see how the elections will go, it is ours and there is no going back. “I thank you for your objectivity and unbiased reporting concerning our party in the state, I hope others will emulate you. We are not joining or dropping for anybody,” Kaka submitted. |

Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha says that seven governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are in private meeting with the leadership of the All Progressive Congress, APC, to garner support for the emergence of General Muhammadu Buhari as the next president of the country. Okorocha spoke at the APC Rally in Mile 2 area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Monday where thousands of party faithful throng to show support for Buhari and Akinwunmi Ambode as Governor of Lagos state. He said the seven PDP governors were already in Lagos to hold a private meeting with the APC, but he did not disclose the identity of the governors. “General Muhammadu Buhari’s (GMB) victory has been sealed and delivered. Today (Monday) about seven governors who are not APC are coming to hold meeting with us privately. “There is fear in the country. And the fear was that they know that GMB is a good man and he will win. And they know that once INEC announces GMB as the winner of the presidential election, all the bad people who are embezzling the country’s fund will leave the country at night. “The fear of Buhari is the beginning of stoppage of corruption. Do you know that before in this country, Nigerians do urinate on the road? But when Buhari assumed power in 1983, it all stopped. And he also stopped corruption,” he stated. Okorocha also said the PDP is already a dead party, saying that the party died immediately APC was formed. “We scheduled the burial of the party for February 14th but they postponed the burial to March 28. We are waiting patiently to bury the party forever. But let me tell you that you can change the date of burial but you cannot change the burial. It must take place. May the soul of PDP rest in peace,” he said. “The worst thing that can happen to any nation is to have a bad government. And the worst thing that can happen to any family is to have a bad father. Today, it is obvious that PDP is a bad government. And we thank God that we came together to change the bad government. And the change we came together for has started. Okorocha wooed the Igbo community to vote massively for the candidacy of Ambode as he is the chosen one. “I am in Lagos for one man, and that is for Ambode. He is a good man. And he will not deceive you. He has a caring heart. He loves everyone. All tribes in Lagos will be safe in his hands. And this is one man that can start and continue what Fashola started. “Lagos today has improved and he is handing over the mantle of leadership to a man that will continue the geometric progression that has been witnessed in Lagos,” he said. Speaking at the rally, Governor Babatunde Fashola said he wanted Lagosians to give him a gift by voting massively for Ambode, saying that his administration had greatly improved the facilities in FESTAC and Amuwo Odofin Local Government. He urged Lagosians not to sell their Permanent Voters Card, PVCs for any reason as that represented their power to remove a bad government. In his remark, Ambode assured the people of Amuwo Odofin that he would complete the Light Rail project and the expansion of Mile 2-Badagry Expressway which Fashola had started. Also at the campaign rally was the National leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who described the government of Jonathan as a corrupt one which must be changed |

A Peoples Democratic Party leader in Lagos State, Chief Bode George, says a former Governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will never be like the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, no matter how hard he tries. Tinubu, who is a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, is said to be largely responsible for the successful merger of the APC due to his influence across the South-West and parts of the South-South. However, George, while addressing journalists during a meeting with beneficiaries of a scheme by the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, said Awolowo, during his time, ensured free education across the Western region when he was the premier. He, however, said that Tinubu had failed to impact positively on the lives of people but was only interested in enriching himself. He said Tinubu started off by wearing Awolowo’s kind of cap and then wearing round glasses like Awolowo to deceive the people but his deeds were nothing compared to the late sage. He added, “People like papa Lateef Jakande, General Mobolaji Johnson would be spinning wherever they are. Tinubu said he did a one-million-man march but that it is a joke. “For 16 years they (APC) took us to a bridge that led us nowhere and now we are looking for the road to freedom because they have taken us to a point that future generations will not forgive them for. “Papa Awolowo did so much for the Western region and the nation’s education and that is why every March 6, we remember him. The hood does not make a monk. He (Tinubu) started wearing round glasses, wearing papa’s caps and raising two fingers but he has forgotten the two fingers now.” George said it was hypocritical of Tinubu to sue the African Independent Television over a documentary the station aired against him. George, however, urged the judiciary to be fair in handling the case as he had once been a victim of a wrong conviction. The PDP leader urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that card readers were functional before the March 28 presidential election. He said if the machines malfunctioned, it could lead to electoral violence George added, “It is brilliant to use the card reader but has it been tested? The trial was just done on March 7 and we were to hold election on February 14. So, if we did not cry out, we would have gone to election like that? “We don’t want violence but violence begets violence. If you put in place all the apparatus and everything needed, there will be no violence but if people get there that day and they cannot vote, people will grab the INEC persons there and beat them up. This election is very strategic and will determine the future of this country. “These elections are too strategic and we cannot afford any experimentation.” |
A court in Ivory Coast on Tuesday found former first lady Simone Gbagbo guilty of charges related to her role in a 2011 post-election crisis in which around 3,000 people were killed, sentencing her to 20 years in prison, her lawyer said. Gbagbo, who is also wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity, was tried along with 82 other allies of ex-President Laurent Gbagbo. “The jury members retained all the charges against her, including disturbing the peace, forming and organising armed gangs and undermining state security,” said Rodrigue Dadje. Her civil rights will also be suspended for a period of 10 years. The former president’s son, Michel Gbagbo, was also convicted and sentenced to five years in prison, he said. Ivory Coast’s brief 2011 civil war was sparked by Laurent Gbagbo’s refusal to acknowledge his defeat to Alassane Ouattara, now president, in elections in late 2010. He is awaiting trial at the ICC accused of crimes against humanity for his alleged role in orchestrating the violence. Ivory Coast refused to transfer Simone Gbagbo to The Hague court, claiming she could be judged fairly in a domestic court |
