Meymand Village is a 12,000 year old cave village located in Shahr’e Babak, Kerman, Iran. Meymand is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in Iran and in 2006 census, its population was 673, in 181 families. Some families are continuously living here around 3,000 years ago. The old houses of Meymand Village are carved like caverns inside the mountain. The internal spaces have corridors and pillars showing a rural architecture. The houses are situated in four or five stories, one on top of the other. There is a stove inside each house used for heating and cooking. The inward spaces are black because of smoke and soot. There is also an area of around 400 square meters in the Village containing 15 circular stone rooms. Bones and other belongings were discovered there, giving the impression that it was used to lay the bodies of the deceased. The kinds of dwelling-place dug out of the mountains are not of a temporary nature but rather are permanent homes. The discovery of stone engravings, some as old as 10,000 years, around the Village in addition to 6,000 year old pottery reveal the long lived history of the Village. According to the locals, the ancients did not use a hammer and chisel, but rather a type of local, pointed stone which is hard enough to carve images onto the rocks. This method of carving is still practiced in the region today. The inhabitants are semi-nomadic shepherds, some of whom own Village land that is occupied in winter, whereas in summer the population moves to higher pastures. The local language contains many words from the ancient Sassanid and Pahlavi languages, the language barely changing due to the isolation of the Village. The economy of the villagers is based on agriculture, animal husbandry and carpet weaving; but carpet weaving is more important to the extent that Meymand carpets enjoy international fame. Since carpet weaving is prevalent in the area, other related jobs such as dyeing, felt making, weaving of gilims and crochet working are common too. There is a large inn inside Meymand Village which is used to host tourists. Meymand Village obtained the ‘Reward of Mercury’ as the seventh cultural, natural and historical scene of the world in September 2005. This reward is given by the Greek government, in collaboration with UNESCO, to the historical monuments that are unique from the viewpoint of culture, nature and history.

PassingShot:from left to right is Bode thomas, obafemi awolowo and Ladoke Akintola |
A good lesson to learn on arrogance from the story of Late Bode Thomas: Bode Thomas whom street was named after @Surulere, died on Nov 23, 1953 in a most mysterious manner. Bode Thomas was born to a wealthy trader, John thomas in 1918.He was privileged from childhood. He attended the C.M.S. Grammar School, a missionary school founded by Bishop Ajayi Crowtter. When he left the school, he started work at the Nigerian Railway Corporation. In 1939, he went to London to study law. His huge frame earned him the appellation “buldozer”. Whenever he set a positive goal for himself, every obstacle on the way must be uprooted. His successes in law practice, politics and government were hinged on his sheer resolve to triumph in the face of all odds. Perhaps, that also was why he was always controversial. He was a founding leader of Egbe Omo Oduduwa and Action Group which sprang up from the socio-cultural organisation. He was the first Legal Adviser of the group. Himself, FRA Williams and Remi Fani-Kayode (Father of Femi Fani-Kayode) attended Law School in London, and jointly established the first law firm in Nigeria called "Thomas, Williams & Kayode". The law firm was established in Jankara Lagos. Bode Thomas was an excellent lawyer, but also very arrogant. Because of his education, he was made chairman of the Oyo Divisional Council at one time while Alaafin Adeyemi of Oyo (father of the current Alaafin) was a mere member! On Bode Thomas' first appearance in council after being appointed chairman, all council members stood up for him in deference, to welcome him, except Oba Adeyemi, who, for cultural reasons, should not show deference to anyone in public, not even his mother! Bode Thomas rudely shouted at the King "...WHY WERE YOU SITTING WHEN I WALKED IN? YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO SHOW RESPECT?" Then, Bode Thomas was 34 years while Alaafin was in his 60s. The Alaafin felt very insulted and said "SE EMI LO NGBO MO BAUN?" (Is it me you are barking at like that?) Bode Thomas responded by shouting in vocabularies which Alaafin didn't understand, so Alaafin just told him... "MA GBO LO" (continue barking). This was on November 22, 1953. Bode Thomas got home and started barking! He barked, barked and continued barking like dog all night until he died in the early morning of November 23, 1953. Bode Thomas was the Balogun of Oyo. So, when next you drive on Bode Thomas street in Surulere Lagos, note the man who cut short his life due to arrogance and naughtiness. you can get more details about him on this link http://www.osundefender.org/?p=167470

Ikechukwu again!!! these people are getting crazy day by day ooo |
Fayose Moves Property From Govt House As Olugbemi's Security Aides Are WithdrawnWhat awaits Governor Ayodele Fayose in the next few days is becoming clearer as the Ekiti helmsman moves personal property out of the Government House. This emerged as the State Police Command and State Directorate State Services (DSS) withdrew their operatives from the security outfit of the factional Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dele Olugbemi. Signs that the governor would have problems keeping his job emerged few days ago when President Goodluck Jonathan refused to see Fayose on his visit to the Aso Rock. PDP sources said the President is angry with Fayose over mismanagement of campaign cash and image problem the governor caused him by his relentless attacks on the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, which soared support for the retired General while diminishing the profile of the President. Security sources said Fayose compounded problem for himself while condemning President Jonathan for not using soldiers for the election. “Security officers were holding a meeting with the governor and he was told to ensure adequate security to douse tension. Carelessly, the governor said he was not sure whether “that stupid President will agree like he refused to do during the presidential election”. “Unfortunately, Fayose did not know that he was being recorded. The tape was sent to the President who after listening to it decided to leave Fayose to his fate. Second day, the Speaker’s security aides were withdrawn and Speaker Omirin’s security aides were restored while the state was secured for APC lawmakers to hold a sitting preparatory to Fayose’s impeachment,” a source explained. News about Olugbemi’s security withdrawal had been rife since news broke that the police and DSS had restored their officers to the service of Dr Adewale Omirin as his security officials. Olugbemi himself on a morning live EKTV programme Ee Jii Re Bi today confirmed that his security aides had been withdrawn, explaining that his pleas with the commissioner of police to restore his security aides fell on deaf ears. In the programme, Olugbemi spoke clearly about the cracks in Fayose’s government. He accused the governor of his one-man show style, even as he also accused the governor of starving the Assembly. “The governor does not take me along in governance even though he knows that I am a stabilizing factor in this government. If am impeached today, that is the end of Fayose’s government. But he likes taking out his deputy governor, Chief of Staff, commissioners and other aides while he leaves me out. This pains me a lot and it is better the governor is told to stop practising it. He likes to talk on my befalf and I hate representation by proxy because it is not a good thing. “I am supposed to have seven aides but I can only manage to employ three aides who I pay out of my personal purse. I fuel and maintain my cars from my personal purse,” he complained. A police headquarters source also confirmed this evening that Olugbemi’s security aides had been withdrawn. Also this evening, government sources said Fayose had removed almost all his property from the Governor’s Lodge. Early this morning, the governor sent four hilux vans moving his personal effects from the Governor’s Lodge to his Spotless Hotel. Each van made four trips. Two weeks earlier, there were reports that the governor carted some beds to his Afao and Ibadan homes. Another source said Fayose’s behaviour betrayed his intention in recent times, citing his last week secret journey out of Ekiti State and today’s recorded broadcast to Ekiti people. “He likes loud life, but his behaviour recently suggests he is greatly troubled. He sneaked out of Ekiti State last week and quietly entered. Today, he presented a recorded broadcast to the people as a live broadcast. Something is wrong with oga. The way he is moving his property out of the Government House confirms he is up to a game that is known only to himself,” the source said. Source :osundefender

GOOD WORK!!!! |
Governor Babatunde Fashola on Jonathan's Lagos Rally! I spent about an hour this afternoon listening to the President in my state and, for almost the same period, I saw a very angry president. I saw a president who was recriminating about people criticizing his job performance and was blaming all those who ruled before him, forgetting that he had been on this job for six years. “And he kept saying that, ‘They say we don’t have a plan.’? But for 25 minutes, he did not reveal a plan on Power; he did not reveal a plan on Security; he did not reveal a plan on Corruption. “Now, after six years, without being able to articulate what he is doing and what he will do and he keeps blaming everybody, forgetting that he is the Commander-in-Chief, if the kitchen is too hot, as it is becoming of late, you must get out of the kitchen.” .... AND THEN A FRIEND SAID The first time I heard that President Goodluck Jonathan would be coming to Lagos for his reelection campaign, I was happy because I thought his coming to Lagos would be to tell me how he intended to solve the many problems bedeviling the progress of Nigerians. Today happened to be the day I have waited for, I was eager to return to the office early in order to watch my President campaign for second time but alas, I was disappointed like before as MY PRESIDENT could not tell me why I should reelect him rather, he was sending tantrum at Buhari, APC and his perceived enemies. MY PRESIDENT rather than tell me how he intends to KILL corruption, he was telling me how he met with heads of anti corruption agencies. Rather than tell me why petrol price has refused to come down despite fall in oil prices in international market, he was telling me how he slept in filling station looking for fuel. Instead of telling me how he will fight BOKO Haram, he was saying how past leaders never equipped the army. Instead of telling me how Nigeria will come out of the quagmire we found our selves due to falling oil price, he is telling me how MEND who he once defended wanted to assassinate him. Mr president sir, we knew there were problems in Nigeria, that was why we elected you in 2011 to solve the problems but, now you're passing the blames again. When will you stop the blame game and address the problems head on. Once again, you goofed at your Lagos rally, you failed to convince me why I should vote you once again. Share |

The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, LASU, Prof. John Obafunwa says some people are contending with him because he stopped what he called ‘stomach infrstruture’ in the ailing institution. Obafunwa, in an interview with newsmen recently said because of his crusade against corruption in the institution, those who had profiteered from the system still wanted the rot to continue so that they could continue to live and feed on the system unjustly. “It may sound hilarious but part of the problem is the Nigeria mentality as regard to stomach infrastructure. But it is easy to understand why some people will not be happy, now we are talking about stomach infrastructure, we also have people who understand and are willing to see a change. “For the things we hear outside, they might not necessary be true. Most of the things that happen have to do with the fact that many people are no longer benefitting from the leakages, but I really thank those who have continued to stay by the administration,” he stated. Prof. John Obafunwa, LASU CV Obafunwa said it was only natural that when one wanted to bring about a change, some people would want to resist it, particular when it appeared “you are blocking certain avenues. When I came in, about N13 million was being expended every month on imprest and I know some people who don’t have to wait for their salaries, they just have to depend on the imprest. “By the time I finished my analysis within the first month, the imprest to the office of the VC, I reduced by 66 per cent; office of the VC, including at that time office of the Deputy VC, Internal Audit, Academic Planning one or two other areas, I cut the impress down by 66 per cent; so cutting down the imprest in other areas by 40 to 50 per cent was not a problem. “I know fuel allowance was being collected for a vehicle that was actually off the road, I know a particular unit at that time where a particular director was collecting N610,000 monthly and we were able to run the same unit with N90,000,” he disclosed. According to Obafunwa, in the process of getting certain things done, one was likely to step on toes, “but you have to make up your mind, do you want to be a friend to everybody or you have to do what you wanted to do? While it is true that it has not been amazing, there is a difference between ASUU-LASU and ASUU-Executives, otherwise, how come we were able to resume lecture despite the impetuous period, but there is no need of these, in an atmosphere of peace, we will achieve success.” The VC also spoke on plans by the Senate of the school to investigate the Ph.D certificates of 19 lecturers in the school, saying his administration had never victimised anybody or lecturers in the school, but was bent on doing the right thing. He said the decision of the senate to withdraw Ph.D certificates of 19 lecturers was based on the fact that there were errors in issuing the certificates, adding that there might be compromise somewhere during the issuance of such certificates. According to him, the whole issue came to the fore because a woman lecturer came directly to the senate and complained that she was given a Ph.D in a programme she did not enrol in, specifically saying that what she enrolled for was in M Phil Ph.D in International Business and was given a certificate of Ph.D in Business Administration (Marketing) and that person had refused to collect the certificate. “I did not even know anything about it. When it came to the fore, we now asked a question, what happened? She came to Senate and not to me and Senate directed the Dean of Postgraduate School and Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences to go and bring all the materials of the Ph.D that were awarded in the last three to four years to be looked at. Then they came with 19 and not actually 14. “Senate spent about three hours debating this particular issue and senators were able to categorise everything into about three groups. Group one were about eight lecturers who had no problem, although senate decided that they will like to see their certificates of conversions and what they were admitted for in the first instance. “These people were straightforward, they were given Ph.Ds in the areas they enrolled for, they just wanted the documentation. You have two other groups; one group the university senate considered to have some mild problems and another one, a very serious problem. Senate now decided to look at the documents presented and discovered that it gave approval in 2004 for the postgraduate programme-M Phil Ph.D Business Administration; M Phil Ph.D Management and M Phil Ph.D in International Business. These were the three,” he explained. He explained further that: “You now have people being giving Ph.D in Business Administration (Management) double honour; Ph.D Business Administration (International Business) and senate decided they should go and bring the letters that offered them admission into these programmes, let’s see the document where they made transition from M Phil to Ph.D status, let’s see their thesis because it will be written there. “All these things about double honours are not going to hold ground. If it is Ph.D Business Administration, you get Ph.D Business Administration; if it is Ph.D Management, you will get it, if it is Ph.D in International Business, you will get it. Let us do things right. This idea of LASU being one big family, let us sweep things under the carpet, Senate decided this thing was not going to happen.” Obafunwa said lecturers in the third category were those bagging Ph.D Business Administration (Marketing), adding that there is no programme approved for marketing, neither was there any Ph.D programme approved for Marketing. He said: “What you don’t have, you cannot give. Senate decided that we have to withdraw all these certificates, those that are cleared will get their certificates, new one; areas of double honour will be streamlined and those that do not exist at all will be withdrawn completely and let people do what they need to do to earn that thing. “So, it was not a case of victimisation of any particular group: initially, everything was borne out of one person who refused to collect her degree. I will be grateful to that person, otherwise, nobody would have known anything. Are we likely to review the same thing in other faculties, maybe? Maybe, yes. We must be bold to look straight to people and take certain decisions, the age of mediocrity and sweeping things under the carpet, the age of people saying to you it is a big family, let’s forget, no, it is over.” Obafunwa said all these rot could not have occurred without the connivance of some people in the university as the authorities of the school would punish anyone found culpable. According to him, “Could all these have happened without some level of compromise from within? The answer is yes. We are also looking at that, I don’t want the impression to be given that focusing on people who might have benefitted in one way or the other from it; no, we are also looking at the system, why should this happened? Who and who allows this to happen?” |

You have an Android phone. You love your Android phone. Of course, there’s plenty to love about Google’s terrific mobile operating system, but much of it comes back to the simple fact that Android is open. Thanks to the way Google allows third-party developers to use nearly all of the tools and features at their disposal in Android, the sky is the limit when it comes to developing apps that add all sorts of great functionality to Android phones — and much of it is functionality that iPhone users will likely never enjoy. But you don’t always need to install a third-party app to find exciting new features in Android. In fact, there are tons of hidden features that you probably didn’t even know your phone had. DON’T MISS: Here’s how to give your Android phone a huge speed boost, just like Apple sped up iOS Whether you have a Nexus smartphone, a Samsung phone, an HTC handset, a new Moto X from Motorola or any other Android powered device, there is tons of great functionality that Google has built into the core operating system beneath your vendor’s proprietary user interface. And despite the fact that you’ve undoubtedly spent plenty of time poking around, Android is so feature-rich that there are likely plenty of things you missed. We could run through great hidden Android features for days, but Emily Price recently put together a nice quick list for Popular Mechanics that covers 10 awesome Android features you might not know about. For example, did you know that you can configure your phone to send your unwanted calls — or, anyone else’s calls, of course — straight to voicemail without the phone even ringing? Simply open a contact in the Contacts app, tap Edit, scroll down to “Additional info” and select “Send straight to voicemail.” For less aggressive call screening, you can also create canned messages in the phone or call settings on your handset so you can swipe up on the screen when your phone rings and quickly send a text message letting the caller know you’re busy. Shifting gears, did you know that your Android phone completely eliminates the need to carry any kind of USB flash drive? Just plug it into a computer with the supplied USB cable and select Media device (wording may vary by device) from the options that become accessible through the pop-up in your notification panel. Next up, Price shares a great hidden shortcut in the Google Maps app that comes pre-installed on all Android phones from top global vendors. Before you travel to an area with poor cell coverage, or if you just want to conserve data and avoid hitting your monthly cap, pull up the area where you’re headed and type “Ok Maps” in the search box. Google Maps will then download that portion of the map and store it so you can pull it up later without using any data. And speaking of data, you can also set up alerts under Data Usage in your device’s settings to help ensure that you don’t go over your monthly allotment.

NAICOM sanctions brokers over regulatory requirements, mourns Remi Olowude NAICOM The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has vowed to sanction underwriting companies and brokerage firms that failed to meet regulatory requirements in the insurance industry. Giving reasons for the recent withdrawal of 32 licences of insurance brokers as a result of their inability to meet the requirements of the Insurance Act 2003. The Assistant Director , Corporate Affairs of the commission, Salami Rasaaq, said the brokerage firms were disciplined for their inability to render returns as at when due to the regulatory agency. He said “NAICOM did not and has not revoked the license of any Insurance Broker . What the law says is that you (Insurance Brokers) are given a period of one year to renew their licenses which is 12 months and at the end of the one year, if you did not renew your license then you will be given a grace of three months and if at the end of the three months you did not renew it, then it means you can’t do insurance broking in the market.” He explained that the commission did not revoke the licence of any broker, but they failed to meet the requirements of the law, and that is were the commission came in to enforce the law when any company fall short of the requirement of the law. According to him, any broker that had its licence withdrawn cannot operate under the old name again, but may wish to re-start again, they will have to go through the process of registration of a new company. He said “If at the end of the day they still wish to practice insurance broking business, then they have to go and register with a new name according to the stipulated guideline.” Although, the names of the 32 affected brokers were not disclosed, The Guardian gathered that some of them had not been able to renew their licences because of the stipulated conditions introduced by the regulatory agencies. Meanwhile, the online Nigerianewsreel , reported that the immediate past president of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers, (NCRIB) Mrs. Laide Osijo, has said that any broker who did not renew his licence after three months would be presumed to be out of business. According to her, most of those affected had failed to meet the necessary renewal process, adding that the relevance of the insurance brokers as professional intermediaries operating between the insured and the insurer must be sustained. According to her, their duties include rendering insurance advisory services to clients on the type of insurance to undertake, with whom, and at the best rates. She said, “The broker plays a crucial role in the risk management chain because he represents his clients with the underwriters or the insured not only in the placement of risks but also in the pursuit of claims when a loss arises.”THE board and management of National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has expressed sadness over the tragic loss of Remi Olowude, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Industrial and General Insurance Plc, (IGI). In a condolence letter addressed to the Deputy Managing Director of the company, Rotimi Fashola, signed by the Chairman of the commission, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, the commission regretted the tragic loss. The letter read “I write to commiserate with you and the IGI family for the recent tragic loss of Chief Remi Olowude, - your Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive, and the immediate past chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA).” “Chief Olowude was a dedicated professional who was passionate about his calling and trade. In the short period that I came to associate closely with him, Chief Olowude exhibited a profound knowledge of the insurance industry and his stellar performances within and outside the country no doubt led him to the apex of the industry. “It is regrettable to bid farewell to this icon of the insurance industry who was indeed a guiding light for the industry. May the Almighty God grant the management and staff of IGI and the entire insurance industry the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.” |
