DEMOCRACY OR DEM-CRACY?

Democracy according to Abraham Lincoln is the government of the people, by the people and for the people.

“Dem-cracy” is the government of them, by them and for them. (BSOG Abbeywondrous, 2024)

Attributes of democracy include but not limited to: respect for basic human rights, respect of rule of law, citizen participation, equality, prioritizing the peoples’ welfare etc.

Attributes of “Dem-cracy” include but not limited to: greediness, corruption, embezzlement, selfishness etc.

Democracy day is a national public holiday in Nigeria to commemorate the restoration of democracy in 1999.

May 29 used to be Democracy Day in Nigeria until the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari effected a change in 2018 declaring June 12 as the new Democracy Day in honor of Chief MKO Abiola.

June 12, 1993 was the day when Nigerians in millions expressed their democratic will in what was undisputedly the freest, fairest and most peaceful election since our independence.

Are we experiencing democracy or “dem-cracy”?

How do we know if we are practicing democracy or “dem-cracy”, the questions below will provide a path to it:

a. Is there respect for basic human rights?

b. Do the government of the day respect the rule of law?

c. Are the citizens allow to participate in government without hindrance?

d. Is the government after the welfare of the people they govern?

e. Is there an improvement in the quality of decision making?

f. Is it an inclusive government?

g. Is the media allow to perform their duties without fear and coercion?

h. Do we have absolute freedom of speech?

If your answers is yes, we are in a democracy; if your answers is no, we are in a “dem-cracy”.

We are hopeful that one day we will be able to fully enjoy the dividends of democracy and joyfully sing “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” from the innermost part of our heart.
