PoliticsTinubu Puts Nigeria Back On The Map As Investors Weigh Reforms by abc115(op): 10:02am On Jun 19, 2023
“The excitement about the new president and his reforms is palpable,” a senior banker at a U.K-based financial institution told BusinessDay about how the foreign investor community is warming up to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.

“I was in three cities in the United States last week to see clients and everybody was talking about Nigeria. “He has put Nigeria back at the top of the agenda, in a positive way,” the banker said.
Nigeria is on the lips of foreign investors again after nearly a decade of slipping under the radar.

Such is the rate at which President Tinubu has taken the world by surprise with bold reforms that looked impossible in the eight years prior to his assumption of Nigeria’s top office late last month.

Costly petrol subsidies were gone on his first day in office, paving the way for a tripling in petrol prices. The “thorough house-cleaning of monetary policy” he promised has also started with the suspension of Godwin Emefiele as CBN governor, followed quickly by the deregulation of the foreign exchange market which promptly led to the naira taking a more than 30 percent haircut at the official market.

The reforms have brought pain to Nigerians who now spend three times more to fill their car tanks.

What Tinubu has achieved in weeks, his immediate predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, could not in years. That leads to the first set of questions foreign investors have been asking about Nigeria in the past week.
“Why is the new president able to do these things and Buhari wasn’t and why is no one protesting,” one foreign investor asked
.

Buhari had avoided these tough calls for fear of the social unrest they could spark in a country where poverty is rife and inflation is at a record-high.

Tinubu has, however, made light work of the difficult reforms and has done so while quelling protests that initially threatened to erupt as a result.

Taking away cheap fuel from people that had grown accustomed to the practice for many years was not going to happen without a fight..

Politics10 Benefits Of 2023 Electricity Act Bill Signed By President Tinubu by abc115(op): 1:01pm On Jun 09, 2023
President Bola Tinubu has approved the new Electricity Act, which replaces the 2005 Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act.

The Electricity Act was first passed in July 2022 in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The new bill seeks to promote private sector investments in the Nigerian power sector and de-monopolise the nation’s electricity generation, transmission and distribution at the national level.

Below are 10 benefits of the assented 2023 Electricity Act

1. The passage means that anyone may construct, own, or operate an undertaking for generating electricity not exceeding one megawatt in aggregate at a site, or an undertaking for distribution of electricity with a capacity not exceeding 100 kilowatts in aggregate at a site, or such other capacity as the Commission may determine from time to time, without a licence.

2. Electricity generation licensees are obligated to meet renewable generation obligations as may be prescribed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

3. Electricity generating companies will be mandated to either generate power from renewable energy sources, purchase power generated from renewable energy or procure any instrument representing renewable energy generation.

4. Lawmakers are granted the power to carry out oversight responsibilities and function over the NESI through its respective Committees on Power in the Senate and House of Representatives.

5. Empowerment of states, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit and distribute electricity.

6. States can regulate their electricity markets by issuing licences to private investors who can operate mini-grids and power plants within the state. However, the Act precludes interstate and transnational electricity distribution.

7. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission will be able to regulate the electricity sector within Nigeria.

8. The commission can transition regulatory responsibilities from itself to state regulators when they are established.

9. Until a state has passed its electricity market laws, NERC will continue to regulate electricity businesses in such states.

10. For now, only three states -Lagos, Edo and Kaduna—have electricity market laws and can start regulating their markets. But for other states without such laws, NERC will regulate their electricity generation and transmission.

PoliticsPresident Tinubu Assents Landmark Electricity Bill by abc115(op): 10:06am On Jun 09, 2023
President Bola Tinubu has assented to the electricity bill, which was passed in July 2022 seeking to repeal the Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act, 2005, and thus becoming the Electricity Act, sources inside the villa tell BusinessDay.

The Electricity Act now consolidates all legislations dealing with the electricity supply industry to provide an omnibus and ideal Institutional framework to guide the post-privatization phase of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry and encourage private sector investments in the sector.
