Making a career choice has never been an easy task for a growing child which has no or little experience. Most parents believe in the ideology of "whoever finance the project, makes the decision" when it comes to career choosing of their wards and as a result of this, most make wrong decisions for their wards without considering major factors that influence career-choicing.
Schools on the other hand has failed in helping the situation by not guiding the students in choosing their career, most schools believe it is left to the home and the child to decide.
Most children grow up hearing their parents call them doctor or saying to their hearing that they must be a medical doctor without considering the child's brain power, intelligent quotient and interest, and the child grow up believing the only profession he can do in life to succeed is medical doctor.
The evidence is there, 70% of science students applicants in most university put in for medicine and surgery, Do they all have passion for medicine? No! Why the high percentage? Parental influence.
Make no mistake, medicine is a noble profession with surely good chance of job opportunity and security after college but there are too much misfits and medically passionless people towing the path which account for high number of suicide cases among medical students.
Career-choicing in Nigeria is something imminent for a basic 9 student to choose between science, technology, humanities and business studies. Most students find it difficult and confusing which path to follow as a result of lack of orientation and information on what each department entails and the professions under each department.
The following are the major factors to consider before choosing a department;
1. Student capability
2. Interest/ passion/ talent
3. Society need/ societal relevance
4. Financial condition
5. Time
The afore-listed conditions are to be rigorously considered before choosing a department, for example a student that is very poor in maths has no business in science, someone that hates reading stories and write-ups has no business in humanity, someone that is average in maths and English language is good for business studies, someone that is poor in all will be fair in one, let him go to the one that correlates with the one he's fair at while someone that is poor in all and fair in none should go for vocational training, the essence of this is to bring the best out of every individual and have as many as possible Highflyers among the populace.

Haba bros!!! With what I've learnt self, fart can heal.

Flatulence colloquially known as flatus or fart is something common in our society, which people shy away from discussing. As nature will provide, nothing one can do to prevent it irrespective of race, colour, gender, religion and spiritual being. Before now, there are many tales and fables about fart which has being scientifically disproved.

The purpose of this write-up is to analyse the chemical/elemental composition of an average fart because, fart are a bit different from each other in terms of few elemental/gaseous composition as a result of dietal difference and different levels of bacterial presence in every human being but before now, we've all perceived the odour of flatus before and with our sense of judgement, we will all agree that the concentration of each flatus differ from another due to the smell.

CAUSES OF FART

Flatulence is as a result of mostly bacterial fermentation in the gastrointestinal tract which is given as a by-product and air we swallow. Aerophagia (excessive swallow of air) which is a rare case, do occur and responsible for excessive flatus.

CHEMICAL/ELEMENTAL COMPOSITION OF FART


Fart as a gas is divided into two parts:

a) Non-Smelly: Over 99% of fart is non-smelly, it is further divided into two:

1) Non-flammable: The gases present in fart that do not combust include 59% of Nitrogen, 9% carbondioxide, 4% oxygen and less than 1% combined Hydrogen sulphide (H2S), methyl mercaptan/methanethiol.

2) Flammable: In a typical fart, there's about 21% hydrogen, 7% methane.
I can bet my blog on it that, ever before now, you didn't know fart can catch fire and you just go about blowing the butt trumpet anywhere you like, but now that you know, don't fart anywhere near fire so that we don't hear story that touches the heart.
If you want to practically try this, please do it under supervision as most cases of trial resulted into accident, have fire extinguisher close by.

b) Smelly: Here comes the nose-squeezing part whose most people thinks is a major part of the intestinal gas, but as said earlier it is less than 1% of the whole gas, hydrogen sulphide, methylmercaptan and other Sulphur containing compounds are what is responsible for the stinky part of fart, the more Sulphur-rich your food is the stinker your fart is and vice-versa.

2) Averagely human being fart 14 times daily
3) Human fart more while sleeping
4) The daily average fart of a person is enough to fill a balloon
5) Fart is flammable

6) The sound of fart has nothing to do with what eated, is a result of vibration of the sphincter muscles in the any.
7) Fart as a word is regarded as a vulgar word, flatus or flatulence is said to be more appropriate.
Fart travels averagely 9.5km/hr

9) Sulphur, that smells in fart is less than 1%of a typical fart
10) Beans is notorious for fart production but what makes it stinks are egg, red meat, diary products and food with high Concentration of yeast.
11) People who study farts are called flatologists.
12) Withholding fart could cause headaches,

haemorrhoids and distended bowel.
13) Withheld fart find it's way during sleep.
14) 3 hours after death, human body is said to continuously fart and burp.
15) People who fart for living are called flatulents.

16) Dogs love the smell of fart.

17) There are clothes designed specifically to trap bad smell of fart.
18) There drugs to make fart smell like chocolate or rose.
19) Farting on airplane always seems uneasy because of the cabin pressure.
20) There are some smart fellers who are professional fart smellers who make up to $50000 annually by diagnosing digestive/intestinal illness only through the odour of a flatus.

This year JAMB introduced the Item Response Theory (IRT) which they said would reduce guessing. This sparked some questions about how it works. I will attempt to answer all questions i have seen on Nairaland. Feel free to ask more questions.

What is Item Response Theory:
Item Response Theory posits that the probability of a random person (P) with an ability (A) answering a random question (Q) with difficulty (D) correctly is conditioned upon the ability of the person and the difficulty of the item. In other words, if a person has a high ability in a particular field, he or she will probably get an easy question correct.

How does it work:
The student is asked a question of moderate difficulty level and then if the student answers this question correctly, the next question is more difficult. If that question is answered incorrectly, then the next will be easier.

How is my score calculated
Your score depends on how many questions you answered correctly and the difficulty of the questions.

How can it stop guessing
This is a question everyone was asking. I have a short and a long answer. The short answer is: No, it won't stop guessing. A multi-choice test answers will always be guessable. The long answer is: Yes, it can reduce the success rate of guessing. Here are some ways:

- Some question correct answer are easily guessable. By eliminating irrelevant options. IRT funtion(see below) takes into account item guess-ability and can offer better questions.

- Correct guesses will take you to places you can't maintain. Remember, the more correct answers the higher the difficulty. You will (might) end up falling back to your real level (score).

Any benefits:
- Take less time
- Give more accurate score
- Enjoyable by students (You get questions that you have about 50% chance of answering)
- Student are not presented with the same questions (Reducing collabo with neighbors as the way you answer questions will be different from your neighbor).

The Future/Challenges:
The major challenge will be properly calibrating questions (their difficulty, guess-ability, etc). It takes time and IRT soft-wares are expensive. This year, I believe JAMB didn't fully use IRT, but in the future (from next year), I believe it will be used throughout as they have gotten feedback/data this year and have much time to fully refine it.

its just not fair if they are using negative marking.

I personally see the negative marking of a thing as rubbish.

Few days before the commencement of the on-going UTME, the body mentioned that they are going to make use of an anti-guessing software so as to prevent students that are professional guesser's being successful.
Ever since then, I've been thinking of what the software will be like and how the programmers will code the software. Last saturday students of mine that happened to be very well above average (70-80%) wrote there exam and all scored below 200.
I asked them one after the other what the exam was like and they said it's simple, that there is repetition of questions from 2007 and 2015 questions, that the result they were expecting was around 280+, that they just can't explain what happened.
Since sunday, I've been thinking what could have happened, and the only thing I could think of is if the anti-guessing software JAMB was talking about could be negative marking.
In any case it is, my questions are;
1) Is the use of negative marking justifiable in evaluating students according to curriculum and instruction (SEC) in education?
2) Is the use of negative marking without it been spelt out crystal clear to the students before the exam?
