President Muhammadu Buhari has commended Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy Philip Shaibu for paying him a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa after beating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded Edo Election. Mr. Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu, of the APC to win a second term as governor of Edo State. The President, while speaking to the governor and his delegation on Friday, said, “I thank you for bringing your deputy and supporters to come and see me after beating my party. I am supposed to preside over all Nigerian interests whether I like it or not, but my single desire is to make sure that innocent people don’t suffer. That message I got across to the Inspector General of Police, that elections must be free and fair. “If contestants have too much money and they decide to spray, so be it. But what I insist is, nobody should go and raise a counterforce to the government, arm heavily-drugged thugs to go and humiliate people. “I want Nigerians to appreciate that I respect them as Nigerians and that I am bound by the oath I have taken, that their security is in the hands of God and in the hands of the government, which I am leading.” President Buhari noted that as the leader of the governing party, and despite the fact that the party has lost some states in the elections, he wishes to leave behind a political culture based on integrity. “We have lost states across the country. Now I do not like to escape the responsibility, seeing as the leader of the country, I am also the leader of my party, that I am not leading the party very well. “I am trying to make sure that the party is built on a civilised basis, rule of law and respect for human rights and human beings, right from polling units to local governments, to states up to Abuja and that’s what I have been insisting as my contribution to the National Working Committee and executive of the party. I know we are a developing country, a developing economy, and trying to develop our political culture. I want the development of political culture to be based on integrity and accountability. Let people work very hard and earn what they are looking for through their hard work and through fair competition,” the President said. He added jocularly that he was congratulating the Edo governor “reluctantly” because he defeated the candidate of his party, the APC. In his remarks, Governor Obaseki thanked the President for ensuring that fair play reigned during the election which saw him victorious. “You would recall a couple of weeks before the election, I came to see you and you assured me that we were going to have a free, peaceful, and credible election. That is what we had during the election of 19th September and the whole world has acclaimed that the Edo election was perhaps one of the best conducted in recent times in Nigeria. This could not have been possible without your insistence that the right things be done, and for that, we want to say thank you very much.” He also thanked the President for his congratulatory message, assuring him that the message “has been internalised, that it is God that made this election possible, therefore I should be humble about the election and also magnanimous in victory.” He pledged his unalloyed loyalty and support and that of the people of Edo State to the President and the federal government. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/09/25/thank-you-for-bringing-your-deputy-to-see-me-after-beating-my-party-buhari-tells-obaseki/amp/?__twitter_impression=true |

Kano State Police Command on Friday, averted a purported plan by one Abba Ahmed, from committing suicide over his Social Media “love” for Hanan Buhari, daughter of President Muhammadu Buhari. Abba Ahmed (22), a final-year student of Accounting at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano says his message has gone viral on his Facebook and Instagram handles, where he vowed to commit suicide if he failed to marry Hanan. A reliable source who preferred anonymity disclosed that On getting wind of Abba’s post, the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba, signalled Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Habu Sani, for the immediate invitation of Abba who resides in Kano. It was also added that Frank Mba spoke with Abba on phone for about seven minutes, advising him on the need to face better goals in future, than to commit suicide over a phantom marriage, borne out of infatuation, triggered by Social Media blues. After been counselled by Commissioner of Police, Habu Sani, Abba then regretted his actions, and also expressed his intention to join the police and serve his country, patriotically. Speaking to our correspondent after denouncing his actions, Comrade Abba said he was moved to join the Nigeria Police Force, following the way he was counselled by Mr Frank Mba and Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Habu Sani. According to him, “I am impressed with the way Mr Frank Mba spoke to me. I also became very sober when the Commissioner of Police, Mr Habu Sani counselled me and urged me to desist from such thinking. The Chief Imam of the Police Command also admonished me. “I have denounced my earlier intention. I will no longer commit suicide. I will respect myself and wait for a woman I can call my own wife. I love my life now, and I want to live and fulfil my life ambition.” When asked what attracted him to Hanan Buhari, Abba said, “I loved Hanan because of her beautiful face. I admired her because of the integrity of her father (President Buhari). I also loved her because of the level of her education.” Abba said he actually made efforts to contact Hanan and her parents through Social Media, where he severally expressed his intention towards Hanan, “but I don’t think she knew I loved her. I tried to inform her, I do not think the message reached her. I also tried sending messages to President Buhari through the Social Media, I do not think he actually got the message.” Abba who also deals on fabrics and textile materials at the popular Kantin Kwari Textile Market said he is now ready to begin a new life with a woman she can call his own. He wished Hanan Buhari and her newly wedded husband a happy married life while urging Nigerian youths to invest their time on better things, rather than surfing the Social Media for reasons that are irresponsible. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a portal where election results from polling units can be viewed in real time. In a statement on Thursday, Festus Okoye, INEC spokesman, said the portal will “strengthen the transparency in the election result management system.” He said the use of the portal will start with the Nasarawa central state constituency election after which it will also be deployed in Edo and Ondo governorship polls. Okoye, however, said the measure does not constitute electronic collation of results as collation of election results shall remain a manual process as provided by the law. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has asked the National Broadcasting Commission to halt the transmission of TV reality show, Big Brother Naija. The minister said the need to stop the reality show, which entered its fifth season on July 20, became imperative due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, Acting Director-General of the NBC, Armstrong Idachaba, told senior management members of the commission at a meeting that he had been directed by the minister to shut down the show, according to TheCable. Mohammed reportedly wanted the letter shutting down the show to come from the NBC because of the general opinion that he is bent on sending MultiChoice Ltd, producers of the show, out of Nigeria. A director had told the meeting that the NBC had on July 1 sought an explanation from Multichoice Ltd on a possible violation of COVID-19 protocol with the airing of the show. MultiChoice Ltd had subsequently replied the NBC stating the measures taken to forestall any violation of the Covid-19 protocol advised by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, adding that the Lagos State Safety Commission gave approval for the show. The organisers also said housemates went through mandatory two-week isolation before the commencement of the show and that the BBN House had been disinfected and rearranged to ensure physical distancing, in addition to the elimination of live audience. Idachaba, was, however, yet to convey the minister’s directive to the organisers of the show. Efforts by The PUNCH to reach Idachaba proved abortive and a director in the Public Affairs Department of NBC when contacted by our correspondent said he was not permitted to speak on the matter. https://punchng.com/covid-19-lai-mohammed-orders-nbc-to-stop-bbnaija-report/?amp=1&utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&__twitter_impression=true |
Lagos State Government has said it spends between N100,000 and N1m daily on each of the COVID-19 patients in the state. The Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, disclosed this at a media briefing on Thursday. Abayomi explained that for mild and moderate cases, the state government spends averagely about N100,000 daily. According to him, it costs the state government about N500,000 and N1m, to treat a patient with a serious case. Abayomi, however, said it would be very difficult to calculate what it costs the state government to treat a COVID-19 patient, but what he provided was a rough estimate. The cost he arrived at, factored in treatment, cost of feeding, accommodation and the services provided by the healthcare givers, etc. Abayomi also revealed that about 2,036 COVID-19 patients have not been picked from the community in the last two weeks, due to preference for home treatment, logistic issues, wrong information provided in their forms and inability to reach such patients because their phones were switched off. https://dailypost.ng/2020/07/23/covid-19-lagos-govt-spends-up-to-n1m-daily-per-patient-health-commissioner-abayomi/ |

The lawmaker also said in an audio recorded in Hausa that the President was weak. In the translation of the audio, Mashi said, "Buhari will be irrelevant in 2023 because of his intention to support Bola Tinubu for president under APC. "The North will not support that, and that will be his end. Our clerics and the people will not agree with that." The lawmaker has been facing bashing from APC members for his comments. http://saharareporters.com/2020/07/18/katsina-lawmaker-describes-president-buhari-weak-and-irrelevant |
