Education / WAEC Lifts Ban On 345 Ebonyi Schools by Abimbola2525(m): 11:12am On Apr 08, 2023
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has unbanned 345 secondary schools it blacklisted in Ebonyi for malpractices.

This was after the state government paid the fines slammed on the erring school by the examination body.

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Sunday Nwagele, said the government stepped him to offset the fines to the tune of N50 million after WAEC said the schools would not partake in the exams or pay a fine of N500,000 each for infractions.

“We got a notification that several schools in Ebonyi State have been derecognised by WAEC in their 74th meeting of the national examination council,” Mr Nwagele explained.

“When we inquired further we found out that 196 public schools and about 149 private schools including the missionary schools were affected.”

The commissioner said after much enquiries, evidence of examination malpractices could not be found but the government had to reach a truce with WAEC.

“As it stands in Ebonyi now, all our schools, especially the public schools, registered for SSCE/WAEC without any limitations. So there is no confusion anywhere our schools are registered, our children are ready to write WAEC in 2023,” Mr Nwagele asserted.

“To drive home our displeasure, the governor directed me to convey a very stern warning to all the principals that if any school is accused of exam malpractice, the principal will be sacked.”

Education / Meet Unongu Kelvin JOSTUM Graduate A Corporate Dressed Fish Hawker In Makurdi by Abimbola2525(m): 4:34pm On Mar 11, 2023
Unongu Kelvin, is a graduate of the Joseph Sarwaaun Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM) now known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) he carries a heavy basin loaded with dried fish on his head as he hawks daily around Makurdi metropolis.

The story has been told of Unongu Kelvin, a corporately dressed Nigerian male fish hawker who has risen to become the center of attraction in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

According to Daily Trust, Unongu Kelvin, a graduate of the Joseph Sarwaaun Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM) formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) carries a basin of dried fish on his head as he hawks daily around Makurdi metropolis.

Ordinarily, there’s nothing new about his trade, but the fact that he wears a suit or dresses in neatly ironed shirts and ties to attract patronage distinguishes him from others doing the same business.

He also does so without being ashamed, which sets him as an example to young people languishing in self-pity over thriving unemployment in the country.

Kelvin in a chat with our correspondent in Makurdi disclosed that the unavailability of a white-collar job pushed him into the fish trade mostly considered a trade for females, while the idea to take after his mother’s vocation rather than stay idle motivated him to become a professional fish monger.

“I’m from a humble polygamous background. I lost my dad in 2010 immediately after my secondary school education and since then, it’s been my mother – a peasant farmer and local fish vendor, fending for me and the rest of my siblings. However, we are a big happy family.

“I have tried so hard in search of a white-collar job but none seem to be coming forth. I also have tried many things like laundry and dry cleaning services, baking, and even a security job all combined, but wasn’t having a quick turnover so I decided to go back to my roots, where I first belonged. This is a basic product every household makes use of – whether rich or poor – and I also know I was going to have the support of my mom, so I deduced it was going to be easier as a business for me,” he said.

For this 30-year-old, “The idea was birthed this year and commenced in earnest by February. I have always liked to look corporately dressed from my university days till now because of the experience I got as a 100-level student. Also, in the fish business, people might think I’m not learned and that’s why I’m selling fish so I decided to change the narrative and of course, this has attracted many clients, just like it also caught your (Daily Trust correspondent) attention.”

He said the need for a better life for himself and his family further propelled his decision to sell fish as the little stipends he was taking from his employers were barely enough for him to take care of his poor mother in the village.

The quest to earn better wages in his estimation formed the basis to quit job hunting for fish trading, especially since the challenges for him are not extreme because he has come a long way with that as a family business.

However, physical cash in recent times seemed the greatest challenge for the young man to grow his business as he explained that despite the availability of capital, having access to real cash has become an obstacle.

And that’s because the local folks don’t have bank accounts such that transacting business with them has been very difficult. Most times, he uses his profits to buy raw cash to take to them. He nevertheless exudes confidence that he is filling a gap in society positively.

Though Kelvin does his business unashamedly, there are times he, however, wishes some of his folks or friends with negative feedback don’t come his way. But he has managed to keep distractions at bay.

He said, “Truly, it took me the courage to stand some people with bad energy but because I know what I wanted and had made up my mind to do it, it hasn’t been a hard nut to crack; you know why? I wasn’t looking bad so they thought I was doing it not really for the money but for fun or passion. I hawked pure water and bones during my university days so when they see me, we will make fun of it and I move on.

“I ran into a schoolmate who dropped out of the university but is doing well for himself, he has a car and all that, he made me believe the school was a scam but well, it was just his thoughts so I moved.

“It’s not been easy but God has been faithful to me so I’m proudly doing this business. I’m so focused and determined that I don’t give room for distractions.”

Besides being a fish trader, the young graduate is a trained chef so he bakes too. He also works for an organization as a security personnel and whenever he was not on duty, he goes hawking fish or bakes cakes and even does people’s laundry.

Kelvin admitted that the fish business is lucrative except for the momentary difficulties of getting cash to buy products from local harvesters. He would usually contact his mother who buys directly from the local fish harvesters, then she would process it and waybill to him on his part, he uses his oven to further preserve the fish or dry them manually before hitting the streets to sell.

Meanwhile, the young graduate appeared to be overwhelmed by the popularity the fish trade had brought him.

“I never thought of becoming popular through this fish business; I never saw it coming but I’m amazed at how popular I am now. Everywhere, people know me now as a cooperate fish seller,” he added.

He believed that if things continue to work better as planned, then, he will resign from his current security job to focus on the fish-selling business.

While advising unemployed youths to look inwards for what they can do passionately and engage in the same, Kelvin disclosed that “I never thought of doing this (fish selling) I dreamed of having my kitchen but not to hawk, not even fish, but truly unemployment brought me this way.

“There is an adage in Tiv dialect, ‘ka afu goblin ga yo u soor u have meaning, ‘when you are not laid to sleep properly, you can change your sleeping posture’. So, to many whom the government has not given a good sleeping posture, it’s time they change their sleeping posture by finding what they can do without shame or fear of any kind.”

As for what the future might hold for him, the 30-year-old graduate of Fishery summed up this way, “This reminded me of the article I wrote during my service year for publication in the NYSC magazine of that year 2019/2020, titled, ‘Agriculture, The Only Bridge To The Future Of Nigerian Youths.’ That article was published and everyone liked it but to me today, maybe I will like to rephrase it; ‘Aquaculture, the new gold in town.’ If I’m to delve into the importance of fish, we won’t find enough space. However, I’m looking forward to getting a space where I can raise fish and to be the highest producer of fish and fish products shortly.”

Politics / Why INEC Postponed Governorship, State Houses Of Assembly Polls by Abimbola2525(m): 9:40am On Mar 09, 2023
“This decision has not been taken lightly but it is necessary to ensure that there is adequate time to back up the data stored on the over 176,000 BVAS machines from the Presidential and National Assembly elections held on 25th February 2023 and then to reconfigure them for the Governorship and State Assembly elections. This has been the practice for all elections, including the period when the Commission was using the Smart Card Readers.

“However, we wish to reiterate that the Commission is not against litigants inspecting election materials. Consequently, it will continue to grant all litigants access to the materials they require to pursue their cases in court.

“We wish to reassure all political parties and candidates that the data from the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be backed up and available in INEC cloud facilities, including the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV).

“Political parties can apply for Certified True Copies of the backend data of the BVAS. Also, the results on the BVAS will continue to be available on the IReV for interested parties to access.

“We thank Nigerians and friends of Nigeria for their understanding as we continue to deal with these difficult issues and navigate these challenging times.”

Crime / Jeff Joy Nigerian Most Wanted Woman Extradited To Italy (photos) by Abimbola2525(m): 7:53pm On Mar 08, 2023
The most wanted 48-year-old Nigerian woman, Jeff Joy, has been extradited to Italy. She's one of the few women on Italy’s 100 most wanted criminal list.

Jeff Joy had been on the list of the 100 most dangerous fugitives since 2010

and had a leading role in the illegal transporting of Nigerian girls to Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain so they could be initiated into prostitution.

According to reports, she employed the use of violence and threats to keep her victims in line.

Joy had been sought after since 2010 for charges of criminal conspiracy, enslavement, trafficking in people, exploitation of prostitution, and other offenses. She has been sentenced to 13 years in prison in absentia by the Italian authorities.

The successful extradition was made possible due to the excellent collaboration between both countries, with the Italian Immigration Expert providing support to the local police forces.

The extradition marks a unique event for Italy and Nigeria as it was the first case since the extradition treaty came into power in 2020.

The process started immediately following her arrest on June 4, 2022, in Nigeria by local intelligence departments. Subsequently, on February 10, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, informed Italy’s ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stefano De Leo, that Joy would be handed over.

This event serves as critical evidence for how Africa is becoming an influential area for searching for fugitives and fighting against organized crime.

It also proves that Italy is determined to take control at an international level by creating penal and administrative processes to track down Mafia assets for confiscation.

The police force’s central director Vittorio Rizzi also expressed his enthusiasm for this development.

“Today, Africa is confirmed as a strategic area for the search for fugitives and the fight against organized crime. Developing African countries also represent elective places for the laundering of the illicit capital of organized crime and Italy is committed at an international level to facilitate, through penal and administrative instruments, the tracing of the illicit assets of the mafias for their seizure and confiscation,” Italian news media, agenzianova, quoted the European country’s Deputy Director General of the Department of Public Security and Central Director of Criminal Police, Vittorio Rizzi, as saying.

Education / Naira Scarcity: UNIBEN VC Calls For Calm Over Soldier-student Clash by Abimbola2525(m): 2:35pm On Feb 05, 2023
The Vice-chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Prof. Lilian Salami has called on students to always embrace dialogue in resolving issues rather than taking to protests at the slightest provocation.

Prof. Lilian Salami made that call in a statement she issued on Friday in Benin after a clash between some students of the institution and soldiers on Thursday.

Clashes and protests usually cause more injury and damage to the students and other citizens, she noted.

Pandemonium broke out on the university campus on Thursday when some soldiers went there to use the ATM.

There were, however, variations in eyewitness accounts of what transpired between the students and the soldiers.

An account said the crisis erupted when the students resisted attempts by the soldiers to jump the queue for the use of the ATM leading to fisticuffs between them.

Another account said a large group of students descended on the soldiers when the military men upbraided some students for wearing camouflage.

Prof. Salami described the incident as unfortunate.

“The unfortunate incident of the clash between some students and soldiers on Thursday, Feb. 2, resulting from alleged resistance of students to the soldiers’ attempt to jump ATM queues on campus has been brought under control.

“Management of the university is in discussions with the hierarchy of the army in Benin (the Supply and Transport) for an amicable resolution.

“Management acknowledges that these are challenging times for everyone and enjoins all to remain calm while efforts are being made to avert a recurrence.

“Management also calls on the students to constantly embrace dialogue in resolving issues that concern them rather than taking to protests, at any provocation.

“Such protests cause more injury and damage for the students and other citizens,” Prof. Salami stated.

University of Mkar, Mkar (UMM) Reconsidered Wire Transfer for Chapel functions
The University of Mkar, Mkar (UMM) has introduced the use of wire transfer as means for the collection of financial offerings during chapel functions.

The wire transfer was introduced due to the scarcity and unavailable of cash flow within the University of Mkar, Mkar (UMM) community and the nation at large.

Recur that the CBN on 26 October 2022, announced the introduction of redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes into the financial system.

In the same month the apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) launches the newly introduced banknotes which new notes came into effect on 15 December 2022.

The apex bank also capped the withdrawal of the new banknotes at N100,000 (US$222 at the official exchange rate) per week for individuals, and N500,000 (US$1,111) for corporations.

The apex bank had stressed out reasons behind the objectives of its currency policy changes which included the imposition of limits on cash withdrawals to encourage cashless monetary transactions through the various digital channels.

The new naira note redesign has left so many Nigerian businesses with a high reduction in patronage rate due to the unavailability and scarcity of the new naira note.

Earlier the World Bank warned of the newly redesigned naira negative effect on economic activity especially for poor Nigerians due to its timing and short transition period.

The Washington-based bank revealed this in a new report titled, “Nigeria Development Update.” The battle and struggle for access to the new naira note are now at their peak.

Dailypost gathered that his close friends discovered his body in the early hours of Saturday after his door was pulled down when he did not respond to calls and knocks on his door.

It was discovered that the Facebook page of the deceased, who used to make self-initiated designer wears with the brand name “Tart Angle”, contained posts on suicidal thoughts, with most of them also containing messages seeking financial help for his business.

A post he made on his Facebook page on October 8, 2022, read, “Su*cide kinda answers all, it’s the only thing that listens and trusts You when You left all to yourself. Good night and Goodbye.”

Confirming the incident as a case of suicide, the police spokesperson in the state, SP Funmi Odunlami, disclosed that an investigation had begun to unravel the reasons behind his action.
