YOU COULD HAVE ALSO DONE WELL TO ADD THE SOURCE: http://www..com/wedding-nnamdi-azikiwe/
Seems Nigerians are okay with plagiarism. It is a big issue over here!

bishopoliver: Nnamdi Azikiwe i the first President of Nigeria and remains a legend till tomorrow. Here is a picture of his wedding to his sweetheart and one-time First Lady of Nigeria, then Miss Flora Ogoegbunam in 1936. The wedding was held in James Town, Accra, Ghana. Hear what foremost historian, Max Siollun has to say about the late Zik of Africa: If Zik had killed himself, there would have been no Nigeria today – period. He more than anyone else (with the exception of Gowon) is responsible for the continued unity of Nigeria.

The wife died in 1983 and Zik himself later died in 1996. Actually, there was a time the great Zik wanted to commit suicide. In the words of Bimbola Babarinde, an expert on Nigerian history, Zik’s early years in America were so difficult and at one point he attempted suicide by lying across train tracks and waiting for an oncoming train to crush him. A good Samaritan saved his life by pulling him off the track with the train only a few yards from him. Life in America then for a lonely young African man was terrible, especially with all the discrimination, segregation and economic depression.

Also, he had other wives and his youngest wife might still be alive at his Nsukka Onuiyi residence. One of them, Professor Uche Azikiwe is still alive and is a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State. Flora had four children for him (three males and one female), the eldest son is named Bamidele and Uche has two. There was also another late wife named Ugoye who also had two. And a child born out of wedlock from an English woman, the child was named Jayzik and is dead. Zik also had a child named Nnaemeka with a woman named Ms. Nelly Krupp, later Mrs. Mike Ibru (I am guessing that should be Jayzik because this same Nnaemeka died a year or two ago).

He was a ladies’ man and while at Yaba, he was well-known among the female folk. He had eyes for good-looking ladies and his youngest wife, Uche was a member of the renowned Afikpo traditional dance named ‘Nkwa Nwite’ which entertained him when he visited Afikpo. Zik set his eyes on her and today, the rest is history…lol

I agree with you. But if the PAF is the very best, the NAF itself too should be modernized. The entire NAF fleet is nothing to write home about as far modern defence systems and strike capabilities are concerned, and same goes for the Nigerian Navy.
Billyonaire: Irrespective of what we think individually, the safety of the President of Nigeria is paramount, I suggest that the Presidential Fleet should always have the best of nextgen Aircraft fortified with missile defense system.

I do not care who is President at any point in time, but Presidents work too hard and need the very best care that we can afford, loss of any President brings rounds of turmoil on uncertainties, and we do not want that. Do we ?

Take your time and read s l o w l y....I didn't mention Luther as part of Abacha's PAF team. I only made a reference to when IBB arrested Luther and others in the PAF for coup plotting. Read again s l o w l y.

I think there is some inconsistency here... The pilot was in Abacha's PAF detail and was arrested for coup plotting against IBB? How? IBB came before Abacha and Shehu Yar'adua was arrested during Abacha's tenure... Pls clarify

The F-7 Chengdu and the Alpha jets have killed many NAF pilots than many Nigerians know. The entire inventory of the NAF has to be overhauled if Nigeria is to be taken seriously in modern aerial warfare.
Mobsync: And can we say same of the Nigerian Air force wing not under the presidential air fleet?
Flying Chengu F-7's (which is already out of production in China) and Dornier/Dassault Alpha jets (which are glorified trainer jets?).

Let the government upgrade the air force then we can talk business.

CFCfan: Although it is quite common to hear that Nigeria does not lead the world in anything, I want to say that is not correct (in President Jonathan’s voice…lol!). A West African behemoth bursting at the seams with over 170 million souls, Nigeria is the world’s largest grower (not exporter) of cassava even if we have not been able to make any sensible use of it. Cassava bread? Y’all need to dial Aso Rock for that. Manioc aside, Nigeria leads the entire continent in one rather exclusive and luxurious niche: it has the largest presidential air fleet of any head of state anywhere in Africa and it is one of the largest on earth. Oh, and our legislators are also the highest paid in the world, even if they are mainly a complete set of benchwarmers with no reasonable contribution to national development.

If they are not putting their smelly feet on the tables of the Hallowed Chambers, they are in a billionaire’s house stuffing thousands of dollars in their caps. Back to business. Why were three pilots of the Nigerian Presidential Air Fleet killed? What happened when Abacha’s plane nearly crashed in Ibadan?

In the late 1970s, the Presidential Fleet was commandeered by pilots from the Nigeria Airways and these included Captain Dele Ore and later the soft-spoken Captain Paul Mamman Thalal of the Nigerian Air Force (from the north). Captain Thahal, who was the Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet (he was also of the Boeing 747 fleet with Captains B. Allwell-Brown (Director of Flight Operations, he was from the South-South and was highly-detribalized), JB Ibrahim and HI Ogede) was the Personal Pilot and Captain of General Yakubu Gowon, who was the head of state. Thahal (a highly detribalized Nigerian too) commandeered the PAF with Captain Nnaji later retired as the Managing Director of the Nigeria Airways in 1979 (Thahal and Allwell-Brown brought some of the best quality leadership to the defunct Nigeria Airways.
As at that time, the Nigeria Airways was so good that its aviation safety records were some of the very best in Africa and its pilots were used by the Nigerian Air Force during the Nigerian Civil War through routes that were considered to be very dangerous or too risky.

Under the government of the former President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, the Federal Government decided to purchase a new presidential aircraft as his predecessors were flying on commercial airlines and the Shagari government felt it was not dignifying enough (as if Nigeria’s poverty level is dignifying). So, the decision was made to beef up the PAF. But the most interesting part of the gist is that it was Shagari that ordered the plane (a Gulfstream which was to be the flagship of the Presidential Air Fleet) but he never used it, he never even got to receive it. The plane arrived in April 1984 and those in power then were the no-nonsense duo of Buhari and Idiagbon. When the aircraft (named FGN VICTOR) arrived that morning at the Airlift Command of the Nigerian Airforce at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, there was a torrent of criticism from the media as to why the government would maintain such a large presidential fleet while the FG-owned Nigeria Airways was in the throes of death and could not even get passengers.

-At a time between the Shagari and Obasanjo governments, the Presidential Air Fleet was made up of two Super Falcons, a customized Boeing 747 (then called the Victor 1) specially adapted for long-distance hauls, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar (a widebodied airliner suitable for medium to long-range) and four Super Puma helicopters.

-Later, the Nigerian Presidential Air Fleet was commandeered by civilian pilots from the Nigeria Airways (of blessed memory) in collaboration with military personnel. This line of thinking was adopted then because of fear of overthrowing the Head of State in the air or using the airborne wing of the military to carry out a coup like the 1985 aborted coup under General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida when coup plotters were alleged to have planned to make use of NAF bases to launch a surgical strike or hijack the presidential aircraft and oust IBB. (Here is a bit on the aborted coup: in December 1985, the IBB government raised an alarm that it had discovered a plot to overthrow Babangida, and people implicated included the late General Mamman Jiya Vatsa, a soldier-poet, national chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors and IBB’s childhood friend. There was something very unique with this particular plot: for the first time, air force officers, rather than those of the army, were to carry out the attack. The plotters were accused of planning to destroy the Dodan Barracks, then the seat of power and other strategic locations in Lagos from the air using NAF bombers. In fact, some of those convicted of plotting the coup like Martin Luther and Asen Ahura (both Squadron Leaders in the Nigerian Air Force) and Wing Commander Ben Ekele were actually pilots of the Presidential Air Fleet responsible for transporting IBB himself and other high-ranking military officers of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, AFRC. They were all executed.

-Luther had been in charge of the PAF, in fact, he had flown three Nigerian heads of state in the past few years and had just returned from a military training abroad. As for Ekele, he was the commander of the Strike Group at the NAF Base in Makurdi and was the leader of the Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters’ squadron and for two consecutive years, he was voted one of the very best pilots in the NAF. IBB did not stop there, he revenged with a devastating blow to the NAF by crippling it with lack of funds, and the entire NAF itself would have been scrapped or turn to an airborne wing of the Nigerian Army but for the fact that the Chief of Air Staff, CAS, the late Air Marshal Ibrahim Mahmud Alfa, was IBB’s personal friend. The NAF was so thoroughly battered that by August 1993, the Jaguars and other fighters had been sold off and all that was left was merely about five jets, almost dead and barely serviceable. This writer believes that the NAF is yet to recover from such a horrendous blow)

Business / 10-year-old Michigan Girl Becomes Detroit’s Youngest Entrepreneur by Abiyamo: 11:03pm On Sep 17, 2013
I always find it very heartwarming when I see young, bright kids. They are the hope for a better tomorrow. In Detroit, Michigan,10-year-old Asia Newton is already climbing the ladder in the entrepreneurial world. Brimming with confidence that defies her tiny size, she says: I wanna let everyone know that I am Detroit’s youngest entrepreneur and I like to do what I like to do. Some of my trainees are older than I am but I am 10 and this is my company and I am the boss of the company so you have to listen to me. Watch her speak here:

http://www..com/10-year-old-michigan-girl-becomes-detroits-youngest-entrepreneur/

Her business is called the Super Business Girl and she is very passionate about teaching other young kids how to make their own money. Now, that’s one inspiring piece. She might well be the next Oprah. In saner places of the world, they catch them young. And I don’t mean the way you do in Nigeria. Sorry, we do…lol.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

Webmasters / Mark Zuckerberg's Page Hacked By Palestinian by Abiyamo: 6:44am On Aug 21, 2013
A Palestinian hacker, Khalil Shreateh has used his discovery of a security glitch to have into the page of Facebook's co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg. The glitch allows anyone to post onto the Facebook wall of a stranger. Shreateh had initially sent a report of the bug to the Facebook Team but they did not pay him any attention, brushing aside his claims and saying it was not a bug, until he decided to take the bull by the horns and post directly on Mark's wall. The Facebook Team the responded to him with immediate alacrity. However, because of the intrusive manner that the Palestinian employed, Facebook said he will be receiving the stipulated $500 reward paid to anyone who is able to penetrate Facebook's security network.

Khalil Shreateh, whose first language is Arabic had tried it first with Mark's friend and fellow Harvard alumnus, Sarah Goodin by posting on her wall, hoping that he will get some kind of response, but he did not. His post on Sarah's wall reads:

My name is Khalil Shreateh. I finished school with B.A DEGREE in Information Systems. I would like to report a bug in your main site (www.facebook.com) which i discovered it.... The bug allow Facebook users to share links to other Facebook users, I tested it on Sarah. Goodi wall and I got success post.

But when he did not get any tangible response and was told that it was not a bug, he hacked his way onto Mark's page:

'Sorry for breaking your privacy, I had no other choice....after all the reports I sent to Facebook team'.

The post has been removed since and the security lapse has been fixed. The team then contacted him and demanded to know how he did the hacking. Facebook says they will not be giving the dude any reward but welcome his notifying them of any glitch in the future. Well, let's see if Facebook will employ the dude or not...lol!

INTRODUCTION

Obstetrics is one specialty in medicine that is best described as a perfect potpourri of the very good, the freaking bad and downright ugly. Although the birth of a child is one of the most amazing events in nature, it is also one that can come with a lot of mystery, wonders and riveting controversy. Today, is taking a very close look at a very peculiar .

Till date, her case is still a point of study for obstetricians and gynaecologists across the globe as the youngest mother ever in medical history. Her name is Lina Medina and if not for one tragic event that happened to her at the tender age of 5 years and seven months and 21 days, you'd never have read of her as you are doing right now. Yes, she became pregnant. Who give am belle? Wetin com shele to the pregnancy? Where is she today? Follow me, and I don't mean on Twitter (but if you want, you fit roll with me @ Abiyamo1 wink.

HOW SHE BECAME PREGNANT

It was in the year 1939 and the entire world was treated to the story of the most sensational birth ever recorded. It was of a 5-year-old mestizo girl from a tiny Peruvian village perched at 7,400 feet in the mountainous Huancavelica Region, the nation's poorest province, who had just become the mother of a bouncing baby boy. This is a girl that was herself born on the 23rd of September, 1933 according to records kept with her doctor, Gerardo Lozado, some other records say 27th September. It was, and still remains a very peculiar case. Lina is the eighth of the nine Medina children and as peasants, grew up in poverty with a capital P. In the squalor of the village, her parents (Tiburelo Medina was a silversmith and Victoria Losea) were suddenly gripped by fear and anxiety when their little girl started experiencing bouts of nausea. Lina would lose appetite and biere biere, her abdomen started to swell. Of course, none of the parents thought of pregnancy, not even in their wildest imaginations.

Terrified like every other parent, the guard at the police post of the nearby village of Ticrapo advised the Medinas to take her to the hospital at Pisco, near the coast, for proper medical examination and attention. And they did. But on getting to the hospital, the director, a young Gerardo Lozada made startling discoveries: the girl's mammary glands were fully developed. At first, he was even thinking of a tumourous growth but he changed his mind when he saw the mammary glands of the tiny tot. He did his findings and declared her seven months pregnant! It was just incredible.

At that point, Lina's mother then informed the doctor that their little daughter has actually been menstruating on a regular basis right from when she was just eight months. By the age of four, she had fully-developed mammary glands. The poor, religious folks that the parents were, Dr. Lozada said the parents took the pregnancy of their child as 'an act of Providence' (reminds me of some people from one West African nation like that...lol!) You will not believe that one of the reasons why Lina's parents broke off from Dr. Lozada totally was when he told them that the conception was totally natural and nothing divine or miraculous about it. Peru, like other nations in Latin America, is predominantly Roman Catholic and the Virgin Mary is very much venerated especially relating to the issue of the Immaculate Conception (some of the other villagers even though her baby was the son of Inti, the Incan sun god). I really don't have to say much here but you can understand how the hopes of Lina's father were dashed by Dr. Lozada's strict scientific point of view. The parents thought the pregnancy was divine, that it was a miracle. But he let them know that what showed up in Ibadan was just a baby octopus and not any beached Yemoja. And what was supposed to be a sign from the seventh layer of Heaven suddenly turned to a sore sex scandal.

In an instant, the shock waves of the news travelled all over the South American nation known more for the Machu Picchu and llamas rather than underaged mothers. Lima, the capital city was agog with the news. Journalists scrambled to get her pictures, which they splashed on their covers. She was eventually driven to Lima, the capital, where she was blessed by a priest on May 14 (celebrated as Mother's Day) and then wheeled into the operating theatre. But how exactly did she become pregnant? Who was responsible?

At first, all fingers pointed in the direction of her father. The poor man swore by heaven and earth that he would never do such a thing. To worsen matters, there was no evidence of incest and the little girl would just say nothing when she was quizzed as to who put her in the family line. What did she even know sef? Poor little one. Some records indicate that she was raped but by who? That remains an unsolved puzzle. Apart from the father, who vehemently denied the allegation and later released, another major suspect is her deranged step-brother. Lina herself says she cannot remember much of the incident as she was just too young, and is not even willing to say anything revealing, even till now.

BUT HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Well, although is it not possible for a normal five-year-old to take in because her reproductive organs have not yet developed to support a pregnancy, it becomes very feasible under the combination of certain circumstances and factors. There is a condition called precocious puberty and just as the name implies, it is a condition in which a girl reaches puberty a dramatically early age. Mammary glands develop, ovaries become fully functional and menses is as in a fully-grown woman. It is an endocrine disorder and has to do with an imbalance in the production of bodily hormones. Some doctors state that Lina was suffering from Mc-Cune-Albright syndrome which manifests itself as precocious puberty in the female.

Eh, ehrrmm and now this ;

Hmm, ehrrmmm grin

Except U re referring to collection of all scientists including we SOCIAL SCIENTIST I would be pretty jealous here grin grin !!!!

I raised the above points because U, ''pure scientist'' whether, Mathmatician,Physicist and/or a Chemist (Chemistry), only create, construct and invent!!!

The Succesful application and embrace of pure scientist works is our job,Social Scientist, in using ur models to solve societal problems!!! smiley

I have interacted with a lot of pure scientist and I discovered that they can never make Good Ruler Nor Leader unless they take a course in Social Science which shall broaden their knowledge on the application of their models in maintaining balance in the Inter-relationship between HumanBeings and the succesful provision of solutions to societal problems!!!

U pure scientist only see the world and whatsoever therein from one single perspective using Norms in atom and molecules ,gravitation, force blah, blah in adjudging social issue ...... Where humanBeing Change dynamically every second!!!

It is in pure science that ''matter'' will dey Up and Na Up ihm must always dey cuz a law guiding it states so and, so shall it be but we in social science believes a ''Matter'' fit dey Up,Ceteris paribus(all things being equal), the matter soul fit dey ground at the same time ....... Na so we go attack am for Up, defend am for ground grin grin !!!

Therefore,We social scientist are the true ruler of the vast blue planet while pure scientist are our tools to justify the ends grin grin cool

As for ''ART'' it is a weaker means of providing solution to global problems!!!

Education / Francisca Okeke, An Exciting Nigerian Female Professor Of Physics by Abiyamo: 11:03pm On Aug 17, 2013
I love physics. A lot! While in secondary school, physics (and geography) were some of my very best subjects. Nothing made me travel out of this world and deep into the cosmos like physics. My ash CASIO calculator was my best companion and physics exams were always very exciting. I always looked forward to them. Mr. Ige, my physics teacher and a man that I still think is too intelligent for the cage called Nigeria made the subject even more dramatic. If not for the dazzling glare of medicine, I'd surely have gone for physics (or geography) -to the absolute consternation and utter shock of my parents...lol! So you can imagine my excitement today as I write about one of the most intelligent female scientists in Africa! Francisca Nneka Okeke, professor of physics and one of the most enchantingly engaging scientists around.

BIRTH AND EARLY DAYS
Born in Idemili North Local Government of Anambra State some 57 years ago, she grew up in an environment that was scientifically charged like the ionosphere that she is studying. She says: 'My father, a mathematician and educator, was a great mentor and introduced me early to advanced mathematics. When I got my degree in 1980, we were only two women out of 30 students in the physics department. My husband, an astrophysicist, was also for me a great source of inspiration and encouragement.'

EDUCATION AND THE WORLD OF PHYSICS
Like every other child out there, she was inspired by nature and her curiosity was sparked while still a tiny girl. She said of how she developed her interest in physics:

While small, I was fascinated by the sky. I wondered why it was sometimes white and sometimes blue, why the planes flew instead of crashing to the ground. That's when I discovered at the school that physics could give me the answers to these questions and at that point, I knew I wanted to do.

Hearing this brilliant woman speak makes you feel the tingling sensation of watching Einstein speak at TED. Or Stephen Hawking at a Grammy Awards night. She speaks with so much charm and excitement that you can literally catch the fire of physics from her (see video). Hear the Nigerian expert of upper atmospheric physics:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDTTfoFnHrY

It (the ionosphere) is this part of the atmosphere located between the mesosphere and the magnetosphere, approximately between 60 and 600 kilometers. It is at this level that the various ionization phenomena occur....changes in gas molecules (oxygen, nitrogen and carbondioxide) into positive and negative ions and they have gained or lost electrons...

THE IMPORTANCE OF HER WORKS
One of the things about her that really wowed me and left a lasting impression is the scale and scope of her work. She is studying the ionosphere and specifically, a phenomenon in the ionosphere called the equatorial electrojet (EEJ)! Okay, the ionosphere is one of the layers of our atmosphere, the eerie blanket of gases that surrounds and protects our planet from frying as a result of the devastating cosmic rays. The ionosphere is also the layer where one of the most beautiful phenomena in nature occur -the auroras. Currently, the United States has a very controversial project which they started in 1993, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), with which they are modifying the properties of the ionosphere. Radio waves propagation is possible only with the ionosphere, and it is because of this layer that your mobile phones, radar systems, shortwave broadcasters for radio stations, navigation systems for ships, avionics (for aircraft) all work.

As for the specific phenomenon that she is studying, the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) is a narrow band of current that flows towards the east during the daytime in the equatorial regions (of which Nigeria is one) of the Earth's ionosphere, causing a dip at the magnetic field to change almost five times more than anywhere else on the planet. This abnormal phenomenon was noticed as far back as 1920 at the Huancayo Geomagnetic Observatory in Peru. Today, observations still continue using satellites, geophysical observatories, rockets and advanced radar systems. Scientists have still not been able to fully explain the wide and sudden variations in electricity at specific times in these regions but giant strides have been made in this regard and that is truly heartwarming. And knowing that our very own Professor is also contributing to this global pool of knowledge and research makes it all more delightful. Yes, I pray for a Nobel Prize in physics for her! I'd so go gaga that day that Stefani Germanotta will be ashamed of her gagarity. smiley Take it or leave it, scientists are the true rulers of this vast blue planet.

But Professor Okeke is not just stopping there. Her hope is that her research on the activity of the Sun in its interaction with the Earth's atmosphere can give humanity a better understanding and deeper comprehension of climate change and help us locate accurately the origins of some natural events like earthquakes and tsunamis. She has dedicated her life to studying the ionosphere. The least can do is to highlight the stellar achievements of this Amazon, one of those who make us look at the future with hope.

HER WORDS

-'My PhD supervisor, Professor Onwumechi, I went to him and said: I am interested in your area. He said: If you want to be a physicist, you have to talk physics, eat physics, sleep physics, wake physics, live and die physics.'

-'My research is on atmospheric geophysics. It has to do with the flow of ions in the ionosphere and interaction with geomagnetic fields. We have discovered that the solar quiet-day variations which is what we study in the upper atmosphere could be could be used to determine the upper mantle conductivity in West Africa which has never been carried out before in that area. A great moment indeed! (Honestly, at this point, I just had to clap for her, for both the depth of her brilliance and charming eloquence).

-'I am proud that my work is going higher and higher and that more students are coming. My group is growing fantastically.'

-On women, she says: 'We need to encourage them. Which is why I always write more comments encouraging women, encouraging girls to participate. Because if they do not participate in the development of science and technology, invariably, it means (they are not participating in the) development of a nation... '

-On physicists: 'Physicists must engage in greater participation because I have said once that life is all about physics, and physics is life. '

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT HER
-She is a motivator and a go-getter.
-PERPETUA C. OKONKWO, MSc Student, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nigeria.

-She is very determined and can be quite dogged.
-EMEKA OKOYE, Dean of Faculty of Physical Science, University of Nigeria.

-I am giving her moral courage to even be bigger than me, and I think she is almost getting bigger than me now, and I enjoy it. -PIUS NWANKWO OKEKE, Professor of Physics and Director for Basic Space Science, University of Nigeria. PN Okeke is also the President of the African Astronomical Society and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. If we are to develop as a nation, these are the kind of people we need to honour and celebrate and not moronic and retarded politicians whose only claim to fame is daylight (plus nighttime) robbery. By the way, if the name of the man quoted above does not ring any bell to you, then you are either not a science student or always skipped your physics classes while in school...lol! Why? This man wrote the popular PN Okeke, one of the most popular physics textbooks in Nigeria. I still have mine, carefully cellotaped all over...lol!

-'She is someone who pushes you to the brink of any research she has given you to do. It is a fantastic way of supervising.' -KINGSLEY OKPALA, Lecturer, Department of Physics and Astronomy, UNN.

LOVE, MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
Well, well, well! This is another very lovely part of her story! The atmospheric physicist we are celebrating today is married to none other than the legendary PN Okeke himself, quoted above smiley Their marriage is blessed with six children and they are both proud grandparents. Omo, see correct genes! She got married at the age of 18 and their children are aged between 27 to 33.

RECOGNITION, HONOURS AND AWARDS

-UNN was established in 1960 and for 40 years, there was no single female head of the physics department until she came and broke the jinx. She was appointed the first female head of the physics and astronomy department, University of Nigeria. After her, another woman took over.

-On the 22nd of April, 2009, Professor Okeke delivered her inaugural lecture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State and it was entitled Geomagnetic Research in Physics: The Journey So Far.

-In 2013, she was named L'Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards Laureate for Africa and the Middle East 'for her significant contributions to the understanding of daily variations of the ion currents in the upper atmosphere which may further our understanding of climate change'. UNESCO also lauded her for the fact that 'she demonstrates exceptionally original approaches to fundamental research in the Physical Sciences.' For this award, she got a grant of $100,000 at the awards ceremony in Paris, France on the 18th of April, 2013. On the award, she expressed her joy saying: 'I felt very excited, was full of joy and I knelt down to worship God'. The panel that selected her as the winner was chaired by the 1999 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, the father of femtochemistry, the Linus Pauling Chair Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Physics and the Director of the Physical Biology Centre for the Ultrafast Science and Technology, California Institute of Technology, Professor Ahmed Zewail.

When I received the call that informed me that I was selected as one of the five recipients in the ‘For Women In Science L’Oreal-UNESCO’ for the Physical sciences, I jumped up and then knelt down and praised my God. I knew I had worked hard, but it’s not all hard work that has been recognised. It was really an exciting and a great moment in my life, that was in October, 2012.

On the award, she expressed her joy saying:

'On 28th March 2013, the award ceremony took place in Paris. A fantastic, prestigious, and impressive award ceremony. To my greatest surprise, on getting to Paris airport, mighty pictures of all the Laureates were placed at strategic positions all over at the airport, even in streets. Oh I shared tears of joy; therein the encouragement started. It is impossible to describe effectively all that happened on this day. I just summarize by saying that; it is a day that will ever live and be fresh in my memory till I die. Even when I have lived and died, it will live in my children’s and grand children’s memory, who all attended the award ceremony. The 28th of March, 2013 is an indelible date in our family for ever and ever. It is an event to be reckoned in my life and my family’s life. There were so many inspirational women around me in the ceremony; someone like Emerita Professor Grace Olayina-Taylor, who was there to witness the ceremony. She is the first African Laureate for the award.

[The prize money] will definitely improve my research work; it will help in solving some of our problems. It will help in alleviating the problem we face in attendance of international conferences, where we present our work, interact with academic colleague and exchange ideas.'

I leave you with one thing she said about her hubby: “While I monitor what goes on, on the earth’s surface into about 1,000 kilometers into space, my husband monitors from 1,000 kilometers into space.''

In my opinion, that's the real definition of a power couple.

.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

I guess you are catching the joke. Yes, two-star marshal and two-star admiral represent air vice marshal and rear admiral respectively. There are places where one-star admiral does not actually represent rear admiral second grade but commodore. Again, you must be prudent when you put stuffs in the net. Now you seem to realize that military is very regimental.

Two-star marshal? grin grin grin An officer of two-star rank is a senior commander in many of the armed services holding a rank described by the NATO code of OF-7. The term is also used by some armed forces which are not NATO members. Typically, two-star officers hold the rank of rear admiral, counter admiral, major general, or in the case of those air forces with a separate rank structure, air vice-marshal. Read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-star_rank and please stop DERIDING yourself. Oh, I forgot your name is DerideGull.
DerideGull:

I hate to argue with practical dunces such as you. Again, a two star general has an air force counterpart known as two-star marshal, olodo. Forum is a place to learn good and practical stuffs not a place designated for numbskulls such as you who are more concerned with arrogation of idiocy themselves.

The piece will be updated once we get that. For now, information on Major-General Ronke Kale is painfully scarce.
initiate: How did she manage the home front? Do we have any info about her immediate family?

Actually Bismarck, there were various sources that listed her date of retirement as 1997 but I had to follow a more reliable source which stated it as 1996, I will change it when I get even more reliable sources (record-keeping is a tough job in Nigeria and following popular convention oftentimes can be very misleading). Then, she was of the same set with Victor Malu who later became the Chief of Army Staff after her own retirement. I am not trying to portray anything tribal or ethnic but stating the gist that in the military then was that Abacha had to ease out top Yorubas in the military because they were allegedly hatching a plot against him.
bismarck: Mrs Kale, you did your best for the army but it is either the person that made this report is lying or you are lying! You were eased out in 1996 and Diya's alleged coup happened in late 1997: How does it bring up the issue of being retired based on ethincity? Were you expecting to remain and be given the same rank as Abacha himself? You reached the pinnacle of your career, even in a setting where females then had below 2 percent chance of succeeding. In Nigeria's 'normal' circumstance I was expecting a report that states you spent 50 years in the army but since I didn't read such, then there's nothing to blame

Your stvpidity is as legendary as your idiocy is record-breaking. At any rate, my original post had Major-General Kale as the very first picture. It was when the MOD was editing and adding more content to it that the pictures were re-arranged. That aside, you may need to see someone in the mould of Major-General Kale, she took care of psychiatric cases while in the army because clearly, not all is okay with your cerebral tissue. Just read what you are spewing. O ma she o.
DerideGull: I stopped reading the original crap when stumbled onto the phrases such as “the first in Nigeria and first in Africa”. I guess such endeavor is very silly and uneducated arrogation of err of personality which is very common among certain ethnic group in Nigeria.

According the posted junk, the picture depicts a naval officer with the rank of Rear Admiral not a Major General. Thank goodness the lady was not the first female medical doctor who had enlisted into Nigerian armed forces. There were female medical doctors in Nigerian Armed Forces who even attended the rank of Major as far back as 1966. Barring unforeseen circumstances, such ladies would have made the rank of general before the indicated individual even enlisted.

No doubt it came from a person who thought prime minister was a Head of State in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION
When the words 'Nigerian Army' are mentioned, the first image that flashes across the minds of many is a mass of gun-totting, stern-faced, camouflage-wearing, MALE soldiers. LOL! Let's face it, many of us do not really think of women when talking about or thinking of the NA. Well, there are women in all the arms of the gallant Nigerian Armed Forces and today, we are taking a look at the first Nigerian woman to ever become a Major-General (two-star general) in the Army and in any of the three wings of the Nigerian Armed Forces (including the Navy and Air Force). Her record remains unbroken till date in the Nigerian Army but has been equalled by Rear Admiral Itunu Hotonu of the Nigerian Navy . Enter, MAJOR-GENERAL (Dr.) Mrs. ADERONKE KALE.

EDUCATION & MEDICAL CAREER
Major-General Ronke Kale (rtd) trained as medical practitioner before she decided to enlist in the Nigerian Army as an officer. It is quite interesting to know that she did so when even fewer women were donning the uniform of the military (it was not even until November 2011 that the first female hostel in the Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA, Kaduna was commissioned, for how many female students? 20). And as for the curious medical professionals, Major-General Kale's area of specialty is psychiatry. She was inspired to join psychiatry by the late medical giant, Professor Thomas Adeoye Lambo. Africa's first professor of psychiatry. Now, let the buga start, Dr. Bo..lol!

JOINING THE ARMY & AS A MAJOR-GENERAL
As a colonel and medical commandant (Commanding Officer) in the Nigerian Army, she attended the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, (NIPSS SEC12), Kuru, Plateau State in the year 1990 (she was of the same set with retired Lt. Gen. Victor Samuel Leonard Malu who was to later become the Chief of Army Staff). Upon graduation from Kuru (she received her graduation certificate in 1990 as a colonel from General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, who was the military president), she returned to the Military Hospital, Benin, Edo State and resumed duties as the Commanding Officer. While in the army, she was a close associate of IBB's chief of intelligence, Colonel Halilu Akilu.

From there, she was later moved to Lagos State where she served as the Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps , Ojo where she was later promoted to the rank of a Brigadier General, thus becoming the first woman in Nigeria to become a one-star general (but please note that the first woman to be commissioned an officer in the Nigerian Army is Risquat Finni, who later retired as a Lieutenant Colonel).

This amiable physician was the first female military officer to reach the rank of a major-general (mind you, that's solid two-star general) when she became the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps and School (NAMCS) and later bowed out without any blemish in her medical or military career. The Nigerian Army Medical Corps has been described as one of the components of combat service support. Its main function is to provide adequate medical care for the entire Nigerian Army, and in addition to being the second of the four principal services, it is also the only one that is mainly administrative. As the Commandant of the Corps, he/she reports to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) concerning the efficiency and quality of the medical, dental, pharmaceutical and nursing services received by personnel of the Nigerian Army. The NAMC has the following units:

-Field Ambulance (Fd Amb)
-Regimental Aid Post (RAP)
-Company Aid Post (CAP)
-Main Dressing Station (MDS)
-Advanced Dressing Station (ADS)
-Field Hospital (Fd Hosp)
(Credits: Armed Forces Command And Staff College, Jaji)
So as you can see, her role was far from being a minor one.

It was in the year 1994 that she broke the record not only in Nigeria but in West Africa with her appointment as the first ever female Major General in the Nigerian Army. Her job was to see to the psychological problems of the personnel of the Nigerian Army in addition to other duties related to administration and management. The military all across the globe, is one institution that is beset with a lot of psychological trauma and if not properly managed, can have devastating consequences. An appropriate example is the United States military which has one of the most shocking rates of suicide and sexual assault in the world.

RETIREMENT
Retirement came in 1996 under the Abacha regime. She retired honourably and till date, Major-General Kale (rtd) remains a mentor to many Nigerian women, especially those in the military. Some analysts have described her retirement as an ethnic purge by Abacha under the circumstances of an alleged coup reportedly masterminded by Lt. General Oladipo Diya of the Yoruba ethnic group as she was retired alongside a batch that included many others from her geopolitical zone (we cannot make any progress as a nation if all these annoying ethnic wars are not sorted out).

THE GENERAL TODAY
On the 13th of February, 2012, she was honoured at the 17th THISDAY Annual Awards for Excellence (Lifetime Achievement Awards). The only female tw0-star general today in the Nigerian Armed Forces is Rear Admiral Itunu Hotonu of the Nigerian Navy

INTRODUCTION
Although it is quite common to hear that Nigeria does not lead the world in anything, I want to say that is not correct (in President Jonathan's voice...lol!). A West African behemoth bursting at the seams with over 170 million souls, Nigeria is the world's largest grower (not exporter) of cassava even if we have not been able to make any sensible use of it. Cassava bread? Y'all need to dial Aso Rock for that.

If they are not putting their smelly feet on the tables of the Hallowed Chambers, they are in a billionaire's house stuffing thousands of dollars in their caps. Back to business. Why were three pilots of the Nigerian Presidential Air Fleet killed? What happened when Abacha's plane nearly crashed in Ibadan? How PAF pilots were used for dirty jobs? You will know all in a bit. Btw, is a kwezy lover of planes and flying (don't blame me, I went to a Nigerian Air Force school) and today, we will take a look at one of the world's most prestigious air convoys, the Presidential Air Fleet of the Nigerian Air Force (PAF). I'm the captain today and you sure gon' enjoy the flight! Your belts, please.

HISTORY
In the late 1970s, the Presidential Fleet was commandeered by pilots from the Nigeria Airways and these included Captain Dele Ore and later the soft-spoken Captain Paul Mamman Thalal of the Nigerian Air Force (from the north). Captain Thahal, who was the Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet (he was also of the Boeing 747 fleet with Captains B. Allwell-Brown (Director of Flight Operations, he was from the South-South and was highly-detribalized), JB Ibrahim and HI Ogede) was the Personal Pilot and Captain of the Executive Jet of General Yakubu Gowon, who was the head of state (READ HOW CAPTAIN THAHAL SERVED MURTALA MUHAMMED IN DARING OPERATIONS HERE: http://www..com/murtala-muhammed-nigerias-most-popular-leader/8/ ). Thahal (a highly detribalized Nigerian too) commandeered the PAF with Captain Nnaji later retired as the Managing Director of the Nigeria Airways in 1979 (Thahal and Allwell-Brown brought some of the best quality leadership to the defunct Nigeria Airways and you can read of Thahal's service under Gowon here: http://www..com/yakubu-gowon-nigerias-wartime-leader/14/). As at that time, the Nigeria Airways was so good that its aviation safety records were some of the very best in Africa and its pilots were used by the Nigerian Air Force during the Nigerian Civil War through routes that were considered to be very dangerous or too risky. (It will also interest you to know that the most prominent non-commercial airline operators then, in addition to the PAF, included the Nigeria Police (now an empty black shell), Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, Julius Berger (e don tey..lol) and the National Electric Power Authority, now also a dark empty shell of its former self, 'radiating' its darkness and dark energy all over the country).

-Under the government of the former President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, the Federal Government decided to purchase a new presidential aircraft as his predecessors were flying on commercial airlines and the Shagari government felt it was not dignifying enough (as if Nigeria’s poverty level is dignifying). So, the decision was made to beef up the PAF. But the most interesting part of the gist is that it was Shagari that ordered the plane (a Gulfstream which was to be the flagship of the Presidential Air Fleet) but he never used it, he never even got to receive it. The plane arrived in April 1984 and those in power then were the no-nonsense duo of Buhari (READ ALL ABOUT MAJOR GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI HERE: http://www..com/muhammadu-buhari-nigerias-strictest-leader/ ) and Idiagbon. When the aircraft (named FGN VICTOR) arrived that morning at the Airlift Command of the Nigerian Air Force at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, there was a torrent of criticism from the media as to why the government would maintain such a large presidential fleet while the FG-owned Nigeria Airways was in the throes of death and could not even get passengers.

-At a time between the Shagari and Obasanjo governments, the Presidential Air Fleet was made up of two Super Falcons, a customized Boeing 747 (then called the Victor 1) specially adapted for long-distance hauls, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar (a widebodied airliner suitable for medium to long-range flights) and four Super Puma helicopters.

(Here is a bit on the aborted coup: in December 1985, the IBB government raised an alarm that it had discovered a plot to overthrow Babangida, and people implicated included the late General Mamman Jiya Vatsa, a soldier-poet, national chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors and IBB's childhood friend.

As for Ekele, he was the commander of the Strike Group at the NAF Base in Makurdi and was the leader of the Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters' squadron and for two consecutive years, he was voted one of the very best pilots in the NAF. IBB did not stop there, he revenged with a devastating blow to the NAF by crippling it with lack of funds, and the entire NAF itself would have been scrapped or turn to an airborne wing of the Nigerian Army but for the fact that the Chief of Air Staff, CAS, the late Air Marshal Ibrahim Mahmud Alfa, was IBB's personal friend. The NAF was so thoroughly battered that by August 1993, the Jaguars and other fighters had been sold off and all that was left was merely about five jets, almost dead and barely serviceable. This writer believes that the NAF is yet to recover from such a horrendous blow).

However, times have changed and the tides have turned. Today, the PAF is commandeered mainly by personnel from the Nigerian Air Force (and I must confess, you will really blush with pride seeing the crew, their training is impeccable and the sophistication with which they ferry the Nigerian Head of State from continent to continent is simply outstanding).

-The real evolution of the current PAF with the involvement of the Nigerian Air Force can be said to have started in December 1978 when the Federal Government made the decision to transfer the operations of all presidential aircraft in the fleet over to the NAF, from the Nigeria Airways. Reasons were not stated but can easily be adduced. For this purpose, an Executive Squadron was created under the NAF Military Airlift Wing. The NAF Executive Squadron later metamorphosed to become the Executive Airlift Group (EAG). At first, the defunct Ministry of Special Duties oversaw the budgets of the EAG but later, it became the duty of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). All along, a combined crew of NAF officers and Nigeria Airways crew was used.

-However, things changed suddenly in December 1985 following the abortive coup. IBB did not only thank his stars but also had the Presidential Boeing 727 aircraft withdrawn from the Executive Airlift Group and handed it over to an exclusive set of Nigeria Airways pilots to control. Thus, in 1986, the IBB government formed the Presidential Fleet (note, it was called Presidential Fleet, PF) with its first head being Captain Moses Gowon. The PAF under IBB operated a total of eight aircraft and when the Boeing was given to the Nigeria Airways, the remaining seven were left under the control of the EAG.
