Warri _Pikin: It does not make sense to be building more white elephant projects which merely serve as a good avenue for corruption.
The FG should intensively search for foreign investors to build refineries and sell fuel to Nigerians at competitive prices.
Look am dey beg for foreign investors.

DON'T YOU GUYS HAVE ENOUGH MONEYhuh

What ever happened to your so-called Nigerian ingenuity and productiveness? I guess that only comes into play when you're comparing your country to Ghana.

It wasn't the technical side of things that gave them up. It was the human/social angle.

Any thief with half a brain would know that when two parties are engaged in a real business transaction, they'd contact each sooner than later to confirm any exchange of monies OR to follow up on an ongoing discussion which ended abruptly.

Old news (7 years ago, when the current opposition party was in power). Lame attack. If we have to scour the internet for a list of Nigerian government officials who are drug barons, I'm sure we'd get a list longer than Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace novel (1,500 pages).

There's another technique called Social Engineering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_engineering_%28security%29). You or I, can pick up a phone, place a few calls to companies and get sensitive information through deception just like that!

When we use those sensitive information to gain access to their computer systems and eventually get caught, we'd be labelled "hackers". These days, that term may have absolutely NOTHING to do with one's computer technical prowess.

In the past, say about 20 years ago, a "hacker" was a true computer systems genius and pioneer.

shymexx: You're not making sense at all... How could they have used keylogger when according to the report, they had no physical access to the PC used by the victims?? - the keyword is "hacking"
The word "hacking" is always misused by journalists and the public.

When people hear or read the word "hacking" they automatically think a computer expert is involved.

If you, for instance, gets the password to your friend's e-mail, logs into his account and gets caught. The title would be "shymexx Hacks into Friend's Email" thereby elevating you to some type of techie genius. Meanwhile, all you did was saw his password taped to his computer monitor.

Believe me, it doesn't take much to be labelled as a "hacker" these days.

Oh, I don't see where it says the crooks didn't have physical access to at least one computer.

Nigeria Might Be Unable To Finance 2013 Budget

There are indications that the Nigeria may not be able finance its 2013 budget given the declining level of its crude oil demanded by major buyers such as the United States and the glaring fact that the nation will have to look at other light oil importers to supply its oil.
Good news indeed. A bunch of self-centered f00ls those anagos are.

shymexx: Tell your country's Armed Forces to stop being cheap and start encrypting their passwords...

They can download freeware on the internet if Ghana is that broke, ok?? undecided
You know nothing about technology. The article didn't mention how they got the passwords. More than likely, they had physical access to a PC which is being used by a GAF staff. In other words, they broke into a building. Whether it's a GAF facility or a person's home is a guess.

Then I'm sure a type of software which is common on the internet known as a "keylogger", which captures keystrokes and emails them to a specified address, could have been installed on the GAF staff's machine.

With that software running, the sky was the limit as to what type of information ended up in the crooks' mail box.

Encryption wouldn't have helped because, a keylogger records keystrokes BEFORE what was typed gets passed on to other software on the machine (eg. browser).

Now, the staff member probably didn't have a good anti-virus on the PC. But even if he/she did, the thieves could have taken it off prior to installing their malware.

It's different. Those Nigerian crooks aren't hackers. They are simply con-men who managed to get a couple of passwords to an e-mail account.

Two Nigerians arrested for hacking into GAF mails

Two Nigerians have been arrested for allegedly attempting to divert $13,978 belonging to Ghanaian peacekeepers after they had succeded in hacking into the e-mails of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The suspects, Peter Okechukwu, 32, and Emmanuel Ifedi, 31, were arrested by officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service at a branch of the United Bank of Africa (UBA), in Accra, where they had gone to cash the money.

According to the Director General of the CID, Commissioner of Police, Mr Prosper Agblor, in November, this year, the two suspects managed to enter the e-mails of Continental African Trading Limited (CATAL) and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) GHANBATT 76 and intercepted all electronic communications between the two parties.

CATAL, an international organisation, had been supplying home appliances to Ghanaian peacekeeping troops on various missions at different locations in the world.

Recently CATAL was contacted as usual by the GAF to supply home appliances for UNIFIL GHANBATT?76 peacekeeping troops in Lebanon.

Mr Agblor said there was correspondence between CATAL?and the military through the Internet concerning the supply of the items.

Somewhere along the line, he said, the e-mails between GAF and CATAL were hacked into by the two Nigerians who intercepted all mails from both ends and replied them as if they were coming from the rightful receivers of the email.

Mr Agblor said the two suspects using the identity of CATAL?sent an email to the military instructing them to pay cash in the sum of $13,978 into a United Bank for Africa account number 01011651102235 as part payment for the supply of the goods.

Upon receipt of the information, the GAF transfered $13,978 into the account as instructed by the two suspects.

Mr Agblor said CATAL realised that the military had suddenly stopped communicating with them on matters relating to the transfer of the money so they followed up with a phone call and detected that the military had paid an amount of $13,978 into an account number supplied by them.

He said it was at that stage that they both realised that someone had hacked into their emails and quickly reported the issue to the Documentation and Visa Fraud Unit of the CID.

Mr Agblor said that the Business Development Manager of CATAL reported the case to the police and checks at the bank revealed that the money had not yet been cashed by the suspects.

The police therefore mounted surveillance at the bank awaiting the arrival of the suspects.

According to Mr Agblor, on November 11, 2012, Peter Okechukwu who happened to be the owner of the said account was arrested when he turned up at the bank to cash the amount.

Upon interrogation, the police said, Okechukwu admitted to the offence but mentioned Emmanuel Ifedi as the master brain behind the whole deal and led the police to his house at Ashaley Botwe, an Accra suburb.

He said investigations were still on-going after which the two would be put before court.

The New Patriotic Party says it is in no rush to go to court to challenge results of the elections which they claim was rigged in favour of John Mahama.

According to Nii Ayikoi Otoo, chairman of the NPP legal committee, the party is still gathering evidence and would go to the Supreme Court to challenge the results when the party is convinced that it has enough evidence...

Huh? WTF? huh

Oh! So, in other words, "We believed we were cheated but we don't have enough evidence."

The opposition cried foul, caused unnecessary tension and injuries, disturbed the peace just because...
Foreign AffairsRe: We Will Make Ghana Ungovernable - Opposition Party NPP by Abrantie: 7:14pm On Dec 13, 2012
If you believe it was rigged, then it was most likely rigged in the Ashanti region against NDC. May be NPP registered a lot of underage people to vote. That could be the only reason NPP thinks it can win the presidency with only a couple of regions.

That's a fair assumption, no?
Foreign AffairsRe: We Will Make Ghana Ungovernable - Opposition Party NPP by Abrantie: 7:10pm On Dec 13, 2012
Umunede: the alleged rigged result indicates that NPP won 2 out of 10 regions. Wot of d unrigged result. Also, it is not about region but about numbers. D alleged rigged result was won by 50.4% but u know as well as I do dat a victory of 49.99% would have lead to 2nd round and anything can happen from there
How do you know it was rigged? What proof do you have? You can't believe that happened because NPP said so. Where is your evidence?
Foreign AffairsRe: We Will Make Ghana Ungovernable - Opposition Party NPP by Abrantie: 6:57pm On Dec 13, 2012
Umunede: all these u are saying is story. I am in ghana and I can tell u dat d general belief is dat d election was rigged. Well, no need to argue, d matter is in court. D court will decide but I can assure you that d opposition party have a good case. Y did Afari Gyan d electoral chairman, ran to d US d same nite after announcing d result?
He's guilty because he traveled? The president is also guilty because he has left the country? Has the opposition yet produced any proof that the EC (who also refereed the election which the opposition won back in 2000 and 2004) rigged this election?

The only way one can become the president of Ghana, by winning only 2 regions (Ashanti and Eastern) out of 10, is either by the gun or by crook. Actually, we can say it's 1.5 regions because they won by a narrow margin in the Eastern Region.
Foreign AffairsRe: We Will Make Ghana Ungovernable - Opposition Party NPP by Abrantie: 6:40pm On Dec 13, 2012
Umunede: This is just a statement. What do you expect to hear from EC before?
The elections 4 years ago (and before that) was refereed by the same EC. The score was closer and that triggered a re-vote. NDC won it. The opposition (headed by the same flag-bearer) won only 2 regions out of 10 and conceded.

Fast forward to 2012, four years later.

1) The process was refined and fine-tuned.

2) Biometric verification was introduced to curtail election fraud. This system was even championed by the opposition.

3) Voter awareness and education had risen. Children who are not even of voting age could sing campaign songs word for word. Our sense of civic duty and pride grew.

4) The election was held and the only hiccup was the biometric verification equipment that delayed voting in a few areas. Those affected polling stations could have gone back to manual verification, but they didn't. Looking back, I think that was a good decision. Nevertheless, everyone who really wanted to vote had a chance to do so.

The opposition again won only 2 regions out of 10, with a vote deficit of about 300,000 but this time they cry foul. Why?

I personally didn't vote for any of the two leading parties, but I felt the election was fair. With the upgrades done to the process, it would be almost impossible for a party to steal 250,000+ votes, without detection while voting was still happening, in order to change the outcome.

Bottom line, the winner run a strategic campaign. They even bused some their supporters to the polls in comfortable buses. They had a game plan when they selected their flag-bearer and running mate, and that paid off.

Finally, look at the total number of reject votes -- 251,720. Votes are rejected due to any number of reasons. Some ballots weren't filled out. Some have multiple candidates elected. Most of those rejected ballots could have been meant for the opposition. That could have narrowed the gap and triggered a re-vote again, but we'll never know.

Foreign AffairsRe: We Will Make Ghana Ungovernable - Opposition Party NPP by Abrantie: 2:09pm On Dec 13, 2012
The election was fair and transparent. A winner was declared: http://results.ec.gov.gh/

PRESS RELEASE - TRANSMISSION OF ELECTION RESULTS

The Commission’s attention has been drawn to allegations that it has engaged the services of a company to do electronic transmission and collation of results on its behalf. We wish to state emphatically that no such engagement has been made, neither is the Commission doing electronic transmission of results.

The Commission wishes to inform the general public that the transmission of results to its Head Office follows a clearly laid down transparent process.

We wish to remind the public that ballots are counted openly at the polling stations and the results are signed by the agents of the parties, who are given copies of the signed results. The signed copies of the polling station results are then sent physically to the constituency collation centres, where collation of results is done in the presence of agents of the parties.

At the end of the collation, the party representatives again sign and receive copies of the constituency results sheets. Copies of the signed declaration of results are sent to the Regional Offices of the Commission, from where they are faxed directly to the Operations Room of the Commission.

The public is informed that currently there are representatives of the parties in the Commission’s operations room who are receiving and checking the results before endorsing them by signing. Indeed, copies of the results are made for them before a copy is sent to the Chairman of the Commission for his signature.

In some instances, party representatives in the operations room have called their agents in the constituencies to cross check the result before signing them.

The procedure for the transmission of election results to the operations room is therefore thoroughly transparent and does not lend itself to manipulation.

The Commission wishes to reiterate that election results are signed and sent by fax and no company has been engaged for any such undertaking.

We wish to assure the nation that we will continue to use the transparent and verifiable approach of transmitting results and further assure that no results can be manipulated.

DR. K. AFARI GYAN
CHAIRMAN

Oh Nigerians! This is a typical case of "misery loves company".

The opposition party has a lot of seats in parliament. They are not talking about war. They meant making it tough for the president and the leading party to get things done. The US republicans did it to Obama and his party in his first term. Ghana will NEVER sink low like your damn country.

Besides, air has blown over this and life is continuing as normal. The general public's opinion of the opposition has started to shift to whiny babies or sore losers. If the opposition continues on that route, it will only mess up their chances even further in 4 years. Isn't democracy great?

That explains the rise in their vulture population and why they have to make good use of it.
