Nairaland GeneralRe: Get Rid Of Nairaland's Front Page by Abrantie(op): 12:51pm On Jan 03, 2013
Mynd_44: The front page is important cos visitors don't have time to be going from board to board to look for what interests them and whether we like it or not, the front page works. I have friends who come on NL as guests and they say they love the topics on the front page.

These topics are actually interesting to some people and just cos we don't like them does not mean the topics are boring
Couldn't it be that your friends love the FP topics simply BECAUSE those topics are on the front page? I think there's an element of psychology going on here.

Okay agreed, the FP does provide a valuable service, but that comes at a cost to other areas of the board. Besides, what criteria is used to select FP topics any way? For all we know, they're selected based on a moderator's mood or from a few shouts of "front page... front page". That's not the right approach. The correct approach should be scientific in nature.

Ideally, it would be better to automatically promote a topic to FP only after it has attained a certain number of comment pages. I see a menu link called "Trending". I think *some* topics from "Trending" should be the ones showing up on front page.
Nairaland GeneralGet Rid Of Nairaland's Front Page by Abrantie(op): 12:03am On Jan 03, 2013
I have observed that the front page usually hijacks the attention of visitors. This prevents exploration of other areas of the board, or visits to other forums' homepage.

Even when I navigate into a forum not on the homepage, I sometimes find myself looking at the number of views or replies of a topic, to decided whether I should participate or not. I'm sure this is true for most users.

I bet a huge percentage of visitors never participate in topics beyond the front page.

Foreign AffairsArmed Robbers Hit Apple Store In Paris, Stole $1.3M Of Products by Abrantie(op): 12:40pm On Jan 02, 2013
(CNN) -- The robbers, police say, were "well informed" and had carefully chosen the time and place of their heist.

As police officers were busy keeping an eye on areas popular with New Year revelers, four armed and masked robbers forced their way into an Apple store in central Paris and made off with as much as $1.3 million worth of iPhones, iPads and other devices.

The robbers entered through a service entrance into the store, which had closed for the day, using violence to intimidate store employees, said Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutors office.

They then "calmly" went through boxes full of Apple products in the basement storeroom, seeking out iPhones, iPads and laptops, said Christophe Crepin, spokesman for UNSA Police, a national police trade union.

"They knew exactly what they were taking," he said, noting that the robbery focused on the merchandise in the storeroom and left the devices on display inside the store untouched.

They loaded the stolen goods, estimated to have a retail value of around one million euros ($1.3 million), into a Mercedes van parked nearby and sped off, he said.

Thibault-Lecuivre declined to confirm the value of the robbers' haul, saying that Apple managers were still working out how much had been taken.

Housed in an elegant Haussmann-style building in a popular shopping district, the store Apple Store at Opera is one of two in central Paris. The other is in an underground mall connected to the Louvre.

Foreign AffairsIvory Coast New Year's Stampede Kills 60 by Abrantie(op): 10:53am On Jan 02, 2013
(CNN) -- Ivory Coast's president declared three days of national mourning and promised a speedy investigation into the New Year's Day stampede that killed 60 people, most of them women and children.

"The president of the republic offers his saddest condolences to the families and close relations of the victims and ensures them of his compassion in those painful circumstances," President Alassane Ouattara's office said in a statement issued Tuesday night.

Ouattara went to the scene of the disaster and has ordered the government to take care of the injured, his office said.

"He also asked an investigation to be carried out as soon as possible to determine the circumstances and causes of this stampede," the statement said.

The horror unfolded about 1 a.m. after a New Year's Eve fireworks show in Abidjan, the West African country's largest city and former capital. The dead included 26 children, 28 women and six men, Youth Minister Alain Lobognon reported via Twitter.

Interior Minister Hamed Bakayoko said the tragedy happened as hundreds of people were trying to go home after the fireworks display ended in Plateau, the city's central business district.

The crush was near a stadium, Bakayoko said, adding that the proper security measures were in place during the fireworks show.

In addition to the deaths, Bakayoko said, another 49 people were injured, two seriously.

Many of the victims were trampled on or suffocated by the surging crowd, a senior fire official said on national television. Rescue workers were at the scene two hours later but could not save the victims, the official AIP news agency said. AIP had reported earlier that all the victims were all children, ranging in age from eight to 15.

A police official in Abidjan told CNN that most of the victims were young people who wanted to join in the celebration while their elders stayed at home. The stampede occurred in an area of narrow streets, according to the official, who did not want to be named as he is not authorized to talk to the media.

He said the parents of those involved were at the hospitals and were being assisted by state authorities.

Before the night's events took a deadly turn, AIP reported that thousands of people had poured into the streets to join the celebration, seen by some as symbolizing the nation's return to peace.

Nearly 5,000 extra personnel were deployed to ensure people's security, the news agency said, most of them in the Plateau area.

Ivory Coast suffered months of violence following disputed presidential elections in November 2010. Laurent Gbagbo, then the incumbent president, refused to step down after Ouattara was declared the winner.

Gbagbo was arrested five months later and is now awaiting trial at The Hague, in the Netherlands, accused of crimes against humanity for the civil unrest and deaths. The International Criminal Court also wants Ivory Coast to hand over his wife, Simone Gbagbo, to face allegations of crimes against humanity.

The West African nation is home to around 22 million people, according to the CIA World Factbook.

The beauty of Azonto is its simplicity. Strength is not a barrier to entry. Physically weak people can dance Azonto and it would still look like nice.

In fact, generally, women look more sexier when doing the Azonto. I can't get enough of the babe in this video:

Sincere 9gerian: Where I reside, as I write this text, we've had 48hrs constant public power supply, no blink. Before this time we been having 18 to 20hrs daily average power supply.
Only recently, the power ministry officials and the transmission company of Nig confirmed the country attained a new power generation peak of about 4,500MW.
This is not eldorado but are definitely positive signs that the reforms in the power sector are yielding fruit.
We expect that 2013 will definitely be better as the new private owners of the PHCN successor companies take over.
Hahaha... 48 hrs continuous power supply in Nigeria and it makes front page. How sad! Y'all sweatin' big time in the Giant of Africa... lol grin

I lose appetite for food with the slightest quarrel, and I'm sure it's the same with most guys.

This must be a biological thing because I believe a man's stomach is connected to his emotions, via his heart. Have you ever heard the saying, "The fastest way to a man's heart is through his stomach"? Well, there must be some truth to that.

We are not starving ourselves. Rather, our body just wouldn't allow us to eat.

Foreign AffairsRe: Protesters Clash In Ghana Over Election Results by Abrantie:
Rossikk: STORY.

Nigerians groaned a lot and that's why power generation/supply has doubled in the last two years, with more projects coming on stream.

As for Ghana, you seem to be living in a bubble in Accra and don't know what is happening in the rest of your country.

''The current national access to electricity supply [of Ghana] is about 43 % of the population. However, over 80 % of the domestic electricity supply is consumed in the cities and urban towns.''

http://www.ghanaef.org/energyinghana/energyinghana.htm

So, nearly 60% of your 22 million population are not connected to the national grid at all. So what, you offer intermittent power to under 8 million people and you're here on a Nigerian forum saying what again? You should be comparing country notes with your mates from Burkina Faso, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia and other small countries.
Merry Christmas! grin ... May this Ghana-Nigeria eWar continue for 'Cultural Learnings of Nigeria for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Ghana' (That movie is absolutely hilarious: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borat)

Ok, back to topic...

The only comparison you need to make that a lay man can understand is:

1) In Nigeria, electricity is guaranteed for only 0 to 4 hrs/day.

2) In Ghana, regardless of whether one is in a village of 1000 (i.e my village) or a city of millions, one can be sure to get power for 22-24 hrs/day if averaged per week. When this TEMPORARY issue is resolved soon, we'd be guaranteed 24hrs/day electricity.

Even the 'small' countries you mentioned get more electricity per day than your fvkkin country, although they don't even have oil, and two are recovering from civil wars.

Also keep in mind that Ghana supplies electricity to Burkina Faso, Togo and Ivory Coast even though we barely have enough for ourselves. This tells you something about the nature of Ghana and Ghanaians -- we are selfless, caring and love our neighbors. You Nigerians call that being "slow", but we just see it as being humane.
