slap1: Not really. ASUU went on strike for the same reason of lack of infrastructure and all that in 2009/2010. Why was it called-off if the needs were not addressed? I think the cry about the dearth of infrastructure is a smokescreen for ASUU to get something through the backdoor. I tell you that this strike will be suspended once the FG release their EARNED ALLOWANCE, which is the main cause of the strike.
Asking why they called off their strike in 2009/2010 is another question, because you should know where the agreement between ASUU/FG is coming from.

N500 billion for infrastructure, N92 billion earn allowance for TEACHING(lecturers) and NON TEACHING STAFF, is not too much for the government to raise since 2010 if they have interest in providing quality education for nigerians.
If the N592 billion is for political jamboree or where they will get kickback they won't be crying looking for sympathy for gullible people to carry along their skim
Politics › Aliyu: Harvard Training Alone Won’t Solve Our Problems by abu12(op): 6:17am On Sep 06, 2013
Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu last night took a swipe on the managers of the nation’s economy, saying Harvard training or World Bank experience alone would not solve the nation’s economic problems.
Delivering a lecture with the theme ‘The marriage of 1914: A curse or blessing?’, at this year’s Lagos Country Club annual lecture in Lagos, Aliyu berated the government’s economic policies which he said have not impacted directly on the people.
“It is our responsibility as leaders that whatever policies we want to carry out, we firsttest it on the people. Don’t say because you are a leader or because you have gone to World Bank, you have solutions to all problems,” he said.
“Whether you have Harvard training, you have Ife training or you have Bayero training, you must learn how to listen to people you want to serve. Don’t come with your Harvard trainings and impose IMF economic policies on the people.”
He said Ngeria’s journey from 1914 till date had been fruitful and that the only regret was that Nigeria should have gone beyond where she is today.
“A country without a visionary leader, a nation without integrity will continue to be having economic problems. And maybe that is our problem in Nigeria. Those who think they must dictate to the people must learn how to quit thescene because part of requirement of a leadership is ability to accept criticism,” he said.
“Not many of us in leadership positions in the country grew up from democratic families. When you don’t grow up in a democratic society, where your father and mother did not have democratic relationship, it may be quite difficult,” he added.
He said more than anything else, Nigerian leaders should avoid acting as dictators and be ready to serve the people as their servants.

Politics › PDP Crisis Deepens: Anenih Under Attack by abu12(op): 6:09am On Sep 06, 2013
A major crack has occurred in the camp of President Goodluck Jonathan as two of his main backers in the south-south region appear to have disagreed on the handling of the festering crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A pro-Jonathan group, Congress forEquality and Change led by former federal commissioner of information Chief Edwin Clark, yesterday chided the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, for admitting that some of the aggrieved governors had genuine grievances.
Clark’s attack on Anenih came as Anenih himself cautioned the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, against making inflammatory statements that could undermine the ongoing peace talks in the party.
In a communiqué signed by the chairman of the group, Senator Ameh Ebute, the group told Anenih to “distance himself from the demands of the so-called aggrieved governors and join Alhaji Bamanga Tukur to work for the party in truth and spirit”.
Anenih had on Tuesday admitted that some of the complaints of the governors who have been up in arms against both Tukur and Jonathan were genuine.
As the pro-Jonathan camp appears to be speaking in different tones, the Alhaji Kawu Baraje camp has threatened that Tukur could end upin jail.
The Clark group faulted some alleged grievances expressed by the governors: “For instance, the claim by the governors that President Jonathan should award the governors, their cronies and family perpetual injunction from EFCC and police prosecution against corruption, embezzlement of public funds and criminal enrichment is condemnable; we wonder how the President could stop EFCC from investigating people alleged to have engaged in corruption.
“Also, the demand that the President should renounce his 2015 presidential re-election bid inspite of his eligibility to contest is very condemnable. They insisted that the call for Tukur’s resignationcannot be a thing that someone should liken to a genuine grievance.”. Read more....

Politics › Jonathan Too Weak, A Total Disappointment – Asari Dokubo by abu12(op):
The President of the defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahedeen Asari- Dokubo, once again took a swipe at President Goodluck Jonathan, stating that the Nigerian leader is a disappointment to the Ijaw ethnic nationality.
Asari-Dokubo said Jonathan is weak and unassertive as a leader.
The ex-militant commander, who was reacting to the latest crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which has led to the factionalisation of the ruling party, lamented that Jonathan could not take bold and courageous steps to tame the dissidents.
Asari-Dokubo, who spoke in a telephone interview with our correspondent, regretted that Jonathan could not act like a typical Ijaw man, who is famous for boldness and exceptional courage.
He asked the President to be guided by an Ijawfamous saying, “Ama Doko Doko Biokpo,” which he interpreted to mean “small, small towns but they are very courageous and keep hope alive.”
Asari-Dokubo said he was unimpressed by “what he called poor response” to the crisis rocking the PDP by the Presidency and advised Jonathan to emulate former President OlusegunObasanjo, who confronted and dealt with the dissidents in the party during his tenure.
He recalled how Obasanjo allegedly wielded power to quench the insurgency led by a former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, within the PDP, against his re-election in 2003.
To this end, he asked Jonathan to stop further peace talks and negotiation with the dissident governors and their collaborators, including Obasanjo and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
He said Jonathan only needed to sit up and demonstrate uncommon courage to subdue his political enemies, adding that the crisis was orchestrated to frustrate his second term ambition.
Asari-Dokubo decried the recent statement credited to Abubakar Gumi that the killings in the North would stop as soon as Jonathan renounced his second term bid, adding that the cleric and his co-travellers were cashing in on the weakness of the President.
He nonetheless expressed the conviction that the plot against Jonathan would fail.
He said: “Jonathan is disgracing the Ijaw people and people of the South-South by negotiating with these dissidents. I am terribly annoyed by the way he is handling this issue, he is a disgrace. If he cannot withstand them he should tell us because there is no basis for negotiation.
“This is the time for Jonathan to act like an Ijaw man and he should stop disgracing us.
“Jonathan should hit them and he should tell usif he cannot hit them so that we can help him to hit them mercilessly. I have the potential to hit them hard. It is on record that I once held Nigeria hostage and Nigeria could not produce oil for 48 hours and my activities forced the prices of crude oil globally to rise by $30 one day. It was unprecedented and I can repeat it.
“The plot against Jonathan will surely fail but the President should be decisive with these people once and for all. Jonathan should assert himself as President and put these people where they should be. Obasanjo, who is leading these people did two terms and he plotted a third term.
“There should be no negotiation with dissidents. It should be total war, no retreat, nosurrender and let us see who will run first. There is time for peace and there is time for war. This is the time to go into war.
“Jonathan should know that this is the time for war and if he cannot sustain the war, we will help him to sustain it. How many governors attempted to frustrate Obasanjo? Ibori and others were united behind Atiku Abubakar to frustrate Obasanjo and they failed because Obasanjo was strong, assertive, decisive and courageous.
“Jonathan should be strong to deal with them but whether he is strong or not, we are ready tosupport and stand by him. It is not a one-man battle but a total war and they must be totally vanquished.”
Besides, Asari-Dokubo asked Jonathan to hand over the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, to the ex-fighters in the Niger Delta for a decisive action.
On Amaechi, he said, “Let the security men step aside and let us see how Amaechi can come to Rivers State. Amaechi should not be protected because he has betrayed the collective interest of the Niger Delta.
“Jonathan should be decisive and look at the other way and allow us to stand on the streets for 24 hours and we will see whether this madness by Amaechi will not end.”

Politics › Manufacturer Of ICT Products Begins In Osun, Set To Employ Thousands Of Youth by abu12(op): 1:09pm On Sep 02, 2013
A manufacturing company specialising in information and communications technology (ICT) products, which is capable of generating about 20,000 jobs for youths, has started operations in Osun state.
Speaking at the company’s corporate office in Osogbo, the national sales manager, Alex Oyebamiji, disclosed that the firm, which started about 12 years ago to help promote entrepreneurship development through applied ICT, got to Nigeria about two years ago.
He said the firm has decided to partner Osun state government with the aim of manufacturing ICT products like phones, laptops and computer tablets.
Oyebamiji also disclosed that the factory for the company, which is located in Ilesa, has reached 85 per cent completion, and this makes it to be the first ICT company to build a factory of its own in that part of Nigeria.
On the choice of Osun state, he said the state has a divine economic policy and “everyone is aware that ICT facilitates global business. Economically, the state has been very vibrant. There is high response to ICT appreciation. The people have been responding to the quest for scholarship after winning our proposed raffle draw.”
He added, “Our intention is to empower youth after training. We would start by engaging five hundred youths immediately after completing the factory. Later over one thousand youth would be employed to work in the factory.
“Other segment of workers will be determined by the product range as the products and pricesare segmented into low, middle and high class,in accordance with the distributorship or dealership and retailer-ship levels”.
He further stated that accessibility to the Lagos-Abuja Express road, electricity and manpower accounted for the decision of the company to site its company at Ilesa.
As part of the activities of the company in the past, Oyebamiji said by May this year, about 5,000 youths graduated from the company’s training session. He added that 100 out of themhave been picked and trained for technical work at their factory in Ghana. They were trained on how to assemble and repair phones, laptops, computer tablets and all other ICT facilities.
Also, as corporate citizen’s responsibility, the company has donated sixteen buses with its logo on them offering free ride to the people in Ilesa, Ila, Ede, while ten out of these buses are plying Osogbo metropolis

Politics › Jonathan, 16 Governors Hold Talks Torescue PDP by abu12(op): 7:20am On Sep 02, 2013
There were fears yesterday that more Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors may jump the sinking ship to deepen the ruling party’s woes.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who was shockedby the action of the Atiku Abubakar/Governors group, has been consulting with “loyal” PDP governors, the party leadership and its Board ofTrustees chairman, Chief Tony Anenih.
The President last night met with 16 PDP governors at the First Lady’s Conference Room at the Villa in Abuja.
At the meeting were: Vice President Namadi Sambo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Anyim Pius Anyim, National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki and Inteligence Agency chief Joe Gadzama.
Governors at the meeting are: Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Idris Wada (Kogi), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Mukhtar Yero (Kaduna), Saidu Dakingari (Kebbi), Theodore Orji (Abia), Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe), Jonah Jang (Plateau) and Garba Umar (Taraba).
Governors Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Sule Lamido (Jigawa) were absent.
Suspended Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi was also absent among others.
The meeting was underway at press time last night.
Earlier yesterday, Dr. Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo were together at the Aso Villa Chapel for a service. The two leaders were joined by visiting President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi.
They visited the children’s church from where the three of them and the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, went into the President’s residence for lunch.
But Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said contrary to speculations, there was no private meeting with Obasanjo.
According to him, Obasanjo merely accompanied the Beninoise President to the Villa.
He said the visiting President met with Jonathan after which both of them left the villa.
There has been increasing speculation of a crack in the relationship between Jonathan and Obasanjo.
The ex-President was absent at the PDP SpecialNational Convention held on Saturday in Abuja.
Atiku, seven governors – Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Abdufatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Chibuike Amaechi (Rivers) – formed a parallel PDP. They named Abubakar Baraje as Chairman, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja (Deputy Chairman) and Olagunsoye Oyinlola (National Secretary).
Among the leaders of the new group are Senator Bukola Saraki and ex-Governor Abdullahi Adamu.
As the President was consulting with Anenih, PDP Governors Forum, party leaders, security chiefs, and cabinet members, there were fears last night that more governors might join the new PDP in the next few weeks.
Atiku, the National Chairman of the new PDP, the seven governors and members of the National Assembly met at the Kano Governor’s Lodge in Abuja till 1am yesterday.
They decided to push ahead with the new faction of the party and constituted their National Working Committee, it was gathered.
According to sources, during a post-mortem meeting, Jonathan and other leaders of his faction of PDP were shocked that they were unaware of the plot by Atiku and the seven governors.
It was gathered that a security report gave onlyclues to a wedding reception at the Shehu MusaYar’Adua Centre. The wedding was held earlier in the day, before Atiku and the governors stormed the centre at about 4pm.
Atiku and the governors used the wedding as a decoy to split the PDP, said a source, adding: “They showed that they have mastery of politics by beating security agencies to it. The full attention of security agencies was paid to the Special National Convention venue, the Eagle Square, rather than sideline issues.
“This factionalisation has really baffled the Presidency, which would have loved to avert the formation of a faction of PDP,” a highly-placed source said, adding that since the deed had been done, Jonathan, BOT members, governors and leaders of his faction had been pondering options available to the government to address the challenge.
The source said: “The atmosphere in the Presidency has been worrisome. There are three options available to the government. These are: .dumping National Chairman Bamanga Tukur to pave the way for the reunification of all PDP governors, leaders and members; .damning the consequences of Atiku and the seven governors; and .exploring legal options to frustrate the emergence of the PDP faction.
Some party leaders are said to be in favour of Tukur’s exit, as he is central to the crisis. They alleged that Tukur and his team were not circumspect in stopping statutory delegates from some states from attending the Special National Convention.
As at last night, Jonathan was yet to make up his mind on the option to choose.
It was learnt that some members of the cabinetare looking at the larger picture behind the splitof PDP on the administration.
There are fears over the likely control of the National Assembly by the opposition and the new PDP faction.
“If we allow the crisis to fester, it may lead to agang-up against this administration in the National Assembly, which could threaten our democracy. It means they can frustrate any billfrom the Presidency.
“Some of us are in support of rapprochement since we are all members of the same family,” a source in the Presidency said.
There were signs last night that more governors, ex-governors National Assembly members and leaders might join the new PDP.
According to one of the leaders of the Atiku-governors faction, the full picture of the split in the PDP will emerge in the next few weeks.
The top leader said: “Our leaders will be coming out soon to identify with the new PDP and you will be shocked. Other governors will join us too.”
At a crucial meeting, which ended at about 1am yesterday, the leaders of the New PDP planned how to consolidate their faction.
At the meeting, which was held at Kano Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro District in Abuja, were Atiku, all the seven governors and members of the National Assembly.
The leaders constituted the new National Working Committee of PDP, discussed choice of a new secretariat and how to handle threats/intimidation from the Presidency.
The release of the list of the factional NWC members was being awaited last night.
